I know.
Point I was making in a backhanded sort of way was the Ped State faithful look at that game in 2005 as one the bright spots of their programs achievement
We look at 2005 as losing an epic game to Texas but beating scUM and ND to end the year.
When you finish the season ranked #3, and included on your resume is a win over the team that ended the season ranked #4, you've had a pretty damn good season.
Yes, Penn State needs to have MANY more of those seasons to have a program that has accomplishments on the level of Ohio State football. We have not been anywhere close to as good as Ohio State has been over the last 10 years. That's inarguable.
FWIW, teams over the 2005-2014 era who have (a) finished the season ranked in the Top 4, and (b) have victories over teams that also ended the season ranked in the Top 4:
2014: #1 Ohio State (wins over #2 Oregon and #4 Alabama)
2013: #1 Florida State (win over #2 Auburn)
2012: #1 Alabama (win over #4 Notre Dame)
2011: #1 Alabama (win over #2 LSU)
2011: #2 LSU (wins over #1 Alabama and #4 Oregon)
2010: #1 Auburn (win over #3 Oregon)
2010: #3 Oregon (win over #4 Stanford)
2009: #1 Alabama (wins over #2 Texas and #3 Florida)
2006: #1 Florida (wins over #2 Ohio State and #3 LSU)
2005: #1 Texas (wins over #2 USC and #4 Ohio State)
2005: #3 Penn State (win over #4 Ohio State)
