at 27-3 i had no problem with going for it on fourth down to really put the game away at 34-3. i dont feel bad for joe pa- how easily we forget the 62 points they put on us in '94, which obviously was also unecessary. but the point of the game is to put points on the board, and if you cant stop the other team, face the consequences

A field goal alone would have salted the game.
The only way your scenario makes sense is if, after that call you sit your 1st string and play catch with the back-ups. With only 20 minutes (in fact less) remaining there is no need to do anything BUT kick the field goal.
