Gotta mention that Penn St will likely start two LHP. History tells us that’s a potential problem for our guys.

a series sweep here is almost a must with Indiana, Minnesota, and Illinois coming up next. All three of those teams are top 50 RPI and threats to win the league, and they aren’t usually the type of teams that we beat. Looking back, Beals teams have made most of their hay on teams that finish bottom third of the standings. Maybe this year will be different

Ohio State improves to 22-10 overall and 4-3 in Big Ten play with Friday night victory at Penn State

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Behind a strong pitching staff, the Ohio State baseball team claimed a 1-0 win at Penn State Friday night at in front of 1,214 fans at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. With their second straight shutout victory, the Buckeyes improve to 22-10 overall and 4-3 in Big Ten play, while the Nittany Lions drop to 7-20 overall and 1-9 in conference action. Right-handed reliever Kyle Michalik got the win to improve to 1-1 on the year, while right-handed reliever Seth Kinker claim his eighth save of 2018.

“Our pitching staff was strong tonight and we’ve won a lot of games with our bats this year and it’s great to have two wins in a row now due to our arms,” head coach Greg Beals said. “It’s important for a baseball team to prove they can win games in different ways. We are starting to show that. I liked how we played defensively and we turned a couple double plays. Dingler got a ball in the gap really well tonight on a play. We had one error on a tough chopper and made the right read, but just couldn’t come up with the hop. Overall, the defense supported the pitching staff. It was a big win on opening night and they had a great outing on the mound. We handled it and found a way to win.”

GAME SUMMARY

• Both teams were kept off the board until the top of the fifth when Dominic Canzone scored the lone run of the contest after PSU starting pitcher Justin Hagenman tossed a failed pickoff attempt at first base, allowing Canzone to score from second base on the throwing error with two outs and two strikes on the board.
• Left-handed starting pitcher Connor Curlis tossed 4.2 scoreless innings, scattering four hits on four walks with two strikeouts in a no decision.
• The OSU defense turned two key double plays in the second and third innings to keep it scoreless.
• The OSU bullpen did a solid job keeping the Nittany Lions off the board for the final 4.1 innings. Michalik earned the win to improve to 1-1 overall, tossing 0.2 scoreless innings on one hit and one strikeout. Right-handed reliever Thomas Waning threw 0.2 scoreless innings. Kinker claimed his eighth save of the season, recording the final nine outs of the game. He allowed three hits over three innings with two strikeouts. With runners on second and third and two down, Kinker got Sloniger to fly out Dillon Dingler in the gap in left center field to end the game. Dingler made his second start in centerfield tonight.
• SCHEDULE CHAGE: Due to predicted weather the Buckeyes and Nittany Lions will play a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m. ET Saturday.

GAME NOTES

• Ohio State improves to 67-36 all-time vs. Penn State. The Buckeyes have won eight of the last nine meetings.
• The Buckeye pitching staff have not allowed a run in 18 straight innings.
• Ohio State left 10 on base, while the Nittany Lions stranded 13.
• Pohl extended his career-high hit streak to 12 games. Foppe extended his to seven in a row.
• Foppe extended his reached base streak to 16 games. Other reached base streaks extended: Pohl (12), McGowan (10).
• Michalik claimed his first win of the year, while Kinker picked up his eighth save of the season.
• Kinker now has 17 career saves, which moves him to fourth all-time in OSU history. He has 94 career appearances and is eight shy of tying the Ohio State career appearances record.

RANDOM NOTES FROM AROUND THFE BALLPARK

• The Buckeyes had their own bat boy for the road series. Radio announcer Bob Spears’ son, Brady, was full of energy and passion in the dugout. He drank probably 20 Gatorades and ate about seven peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, hold the peanut butter. The kid needs his fuel.
• The PSU student section had some fun with assistant coach and first base coach Chris Holick, who is known to sprint around home plate into his first base coaches’ box. The student section would time “6” every inning. Every inning, seriously. He only got stronger as the night went on. His best time was 5.37. We’ll see what tomorrow brings.
• Great crowd in Happy Valley, and why not, temps at first pitch were right around 80 degrees. There was a great backdrop behind Lubrano Park as Mount Nittany glowed as the sun began to set. To the right of the hilltop looked like a ski resort with signs of white trails of snow hanging on as winter, hopefully, draws to a close. It’s baseball season!
• Postgame fireworks rocked the park after the final out was recorded. There is something about baseball and fireworks and warm weather that just puts a smile on your face. A Buckeye win helps too. See you at the park for two on Saturday.

Great to get a sweep in league play! McGowan struggled a bit committing 3 errors, but Dingler was excellent in CF and at the plate. Hopefully we’ve found a way to keep him in the lineup.

Missed the benches clearing after the Pohl HR. Not sure what prompted Cowles gettin thrown at. Penn St is not a team to brawl with...they always look like a football team. Them or Sparty are always the most physically imposing team in the b10.

Things are starting to come into focus. As of now, my guess of the tournament field will be UM, Minnie, Indiana, Illinois, Iowa, Purdue, Maryland and tOSU. The next 3 weekends may be make or break for us in regards to an at large bid. That’s 9 games vs top 50 RPI clubs, so we’ll have a chance to make a statement.

And I should apologize for banging on Meatchicken after losing to Lawrence Tech. Since that loss, they’ve won 16 in a row.

BUCKEYES CLAIM SERIES SWEEP AT PENN STATE

Ohio State improves to 24-10 overall and 6-3 in Big Ten play with Saturday sweep in University Park, Pa.

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The Ohio State baseball team picked up its first conference series sweep of the season taking both games in a doubleheader at Penn State Saturday at Medlar Field in Lubrano Park. Ohio State won game one, 5-1, before blowing out Penn State, 19-8, in the nightcap. The Scarlet and Gray claim their first Big Ten sweep since 2016. With the 3-0 mark on the weekend, Ohio State improves to 24-10 overall and 6-3 in conference action, while the Nittany Lions drop to 7-22 overall and 1-11 in league play.

"We won in different ways this weekend, which is great," head coach Greg Beals said. "We won a one-run game on Friday and we won a game with our bats today in game three. That speaks to our ball club. We are willing to compete for each other and we made sure we took care of business."

GAME 1 SUMMARY

• The Buckeyes jumped out to a 5-0 lead, scoring a run in the third and four in the fourth vs. PSU left-handed starting pitcher Taylor Lehman. Jacob Barnwell sprinted around the bases and touched home plate in the third after a single to right center and two PSU throwing errors. In the fourth, the Scarlet and Gray went back-to-back after solo shots by Brady Cherry and Dillon Dingler for a 4-0 lead. Noah West hit a RBI double for the fifth run.
• Ryan Feltner improved to 4-2 on the year, tossing six scoreless innings and scattered five hits with three walks and five strikeouts.
• Left-handed reliever Griffan Smith threw two innings of relief and gave up one run on two hits with one walk and one strikeout. Right-handed reliever Kyle Michalik threw a scoreless ninth with one strikeout.
• In the box score, Dingler was 2-for-4 with a home run, Barnwell was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and west was 2-for-4 with a run scored and two doubles. Cherry was 1-for-4 with a home run.

GAME 1 NOTES

• Ohio State claimed its fourth straight win over the Nittany Lions in game one.
• The OSU bats collected their 17th game with at least 10 hits.
• The Buckeye pitching staff had a scoreless innings streak of 25 innings snapped in the bottom of the eighth.
• Foppe extended his reached base streak to 17 games and hit streak to eight straight games.
• Pohl extended his reached base streak to 13 and McGowan extended his reached base streak to 13.
• Cherry hit his second homer of the year in game one. He has 11 home runs in his career.
• Dingler launched his third of the season.

GAME 2: OHIO STATE 19, PENN STATE 8

GAME SUMMARY

• The Buckeye bats continued to make solid contact to start game two, putting up a four-spot in the opening at-bat vs. left-handed starter Dante Biasi. Dominic Canzone hit the first pitch of the game for a lead-off single. Foppe hit an opposite field single to right. A RBI double by Noah McGowan scored the first run. Conner Pohl knocked a RBI grounder for the 3-0 lead. Tyler Cowles had the big swing of the inning when he hit a moonshot off a 3-2 pitch against Biasi over the left field foul pole for his fourth home run of the year.
• Penn State made it a one-run game in the bottom of the second after a three-run homer by Shea Sbranti.
• Ohio State had another four spot on the board, this time in the third inning. Cowles knocked a two-run single, Cherry had a RBI single and also scored on a passed ball for the 8-3 advantage.
• In the fourth, the Scarlet and Gray crossed the plate three more times. Canzone doubled, reached third on a passed ball and scored on a wild pitch. Pohl then rocketed a two-run shot into the right field bleachers for his fourth homer. Foppe had a sac fly in the fifth. In the seventh, a RBI double by Canzone and sac fly by Foppe made it 14-5.
• Right-handed starter Adam Niemeyer improved to 3-2 on the year, throwing five innings on five runs, nine hits with two strikeouts and one walk. Right-handed reliever Austin Woodby threw two scoreless inning and struck out three.
• In the box score, Canzone went 3-for-5 with two doubles, RBI and run scored, while Dingler had three hits too. Cowles was 2-for-3 with a home run, two runs scored, hit by pitch and four RBI. Foppe had two runs scored, two RBI and two walks, while Pohl homered in the nightcap.

• Ohio State claims its first conference series sweep since 2016 today. The Buckeyes improve to 69-36 all-time vs. Penn State. The Buckeyes have won 10 of the last 11 meetings. Ohio State outscored the Nittany Lions 23-7 in the three-game series.
• The Buckeyes bats claimed at least 10 hits for the 18th time this season.
• There were a total of 12 walks combined in the game.
• Ohio State had a season-high for runs scored in a Big Ten game (19).
• Pohl extended his hit streak to 14 and Foppe to nine in a row.

RANDOM NOTES FROM THE AROUND BALLPARK

• The fire alarms around Lubrano Park were going off before the start of the doubleheader. It must have been because Ryan Fuelner [Feltner] was warming up out in right field.
• The dugout went crazy when Barnwell rushed around the base paths and touched home plate in the third inning on the two PSU errors. He’s probably one of the fastest catchers in the Big Ten, but he’s still catcher. It’s always fun to see a catcher run 360 feet and score.
• Great French Fries at the ball park. Extra crunchy. The OSU SID had some around the eighth inning of game one. You’re not you when you’re hungry for 18 innings.
• It was a warm, beautiful day to start the doubleheader around 2 p.m., but that changed by the end of game two. The wind shifted from left to right and the temperature dropped around 31 degrees. That is just incredible. Weather man. Both radio announcers forgot their jackets. Unlike the road warriors that both of them are. See you back at Bill Davis Stadium Tuesday for the homestand.
