Penn St. QB Anthony Morelli

Pitts Gazette

PSU Football -- QB Morelli receives vote of confidence from Paterno
Wednesday, October 03, 2007
By Ron Musselman, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

For now, Penn State coach Joe Paterno plans to stand by his man.
Paterno said in his weekly conference call with reporters yesterday that he's "not considering a quarterback change" and will stick with senior Anthony Morelli as the starter.
Asked if he would turn to junior backup Daryll Clark if Morelli continues to struggle, Paterno said: "I don't know. I really haven't given it that kind of thought. I think Morelli will be fine."

Compared to Anthony Morelli, Chad Henne is Tom Brady.

Fuck that, compared to Anthony Morelli, Henne is Johnny Goddam Unitas. There is no way to describe the depth of his badness. There are no words of any kind. I was reading the Trib, and one of the Illini players admitted that on the final pick Morelli threw, the entire Illini D was in the wrong place, and no one...NO ONE...was in the right coverage. Yet there the ball went, right to a player with an orange helmet who had no idea where he was supposed to be. Hilarious.

Hmmm....a worse prediction...Anthony Morelli not turning the ball over in a game, or Ron Powlus winning 6 Heismans? It's a close vote...

Penn State's coach defends quarterback Paterno says Morelli will keep job as starter despite pair of losses
By George M. Thomas Beacon Journal sportswriter

It might not be fair to say that any amateur athlete is on the hot seat, but in the world of college football, buns get warmed all the time when players don't produce.
The latest to find himself in that precarious position at least with the media is Penn State quarterback Anthony Morelli. Morelli is coming off a loss to Illinois, the Nittany Lions' second in a row, which dropped them from the Top 25. Against the Fighting Illini, Morelli completed 21 of 38 for 298 yards but threw three interceptions. His numbers (15 of 31 for 169 yards) against Michigan in a 14-9 loss were worse, but Penn State coach Joe Paterno plans to stand by his guy.

In yesterdays ESPN SportsNation chat somebody asked Mel Kiper if Morelli's draft stock was dropping. I think Mel was actually being kind with his answer - sugar coating it - while laughing behind his computer that PSU fans are so delusional to think Morelli had draft stock to begin with. You can't say much worse about a QB than observing (correctly) "he's not accurate, forces the ball through defenders, doesn't have great pocket awareness, and takes sacks."

:slappy:

Bob (Pittsburgh): How much did Morelli hurt his stock with that awful 4th quarter vs Illinois?

Mel Kiper: I think with Morelli, you're taking sacks when you can't be taking sacks. You need to be throwing the ball away. He's not accurate with the football. He's made a good receiving corp adjust to some poorly thrown balls. He tried to force the ball through a defender and the passes were intended for their TE in the end zone and the defender was standing right in front of him. He doesn't have great pocket awareness right now. Anything that could go wrong with Morelli did go wrong. He's got an NFL arm, a big arm. I would say his stock is dropping.

At one point, Kiper had Morelli as the #5 senior quarterback on his draft board. I think that's where the draft stock dropping comes from. I was appalled that he was ever on Kiper's board to begin with.

I just hope that Morelli doesn't get yanked until after they play Ohio State...for the same reason I want Lloyd to enjoy a long career in Ann Arbor (that whore!).

Why? It's not like they have someone better. Their next best option is a skinny redshirt freshman. Our defense will eat whoever's back there alive.
