PHILADELPHIA (AP) -- A senior running back at the University of Pennsylvania who, according to his family, had been battling depression, took his own life Monday.
Kyle Ambrogi, 21, died in his Havertown home. No other details were released.
"I knew my brother had been having some problems [with depression]. I thought he was getting better," his brother, Greg Ambrogi, told the Philadelphia Daily News for a story Wednesday. "I can't believe it happened. I can't cry yet."
Ambrogi's death came just two days after he and Greg, a sophomore defensive back at Penn, had career games in a 53-7 win over Bucknell.
Kyle, a backup, carried five times for 18 yards and two third-quarter touchdowns. Greg scored a touchdown after recovering a fumbled second-quarter snap.
"Afterward that's all everybody was talking about," Greg Ambrogi said. "How great it was that we, as brothers, got to score in the same game and did so on different sides of the ball. It was awesome."
Donna Ambrogi, the boys' mother, said she was proud of Kyle not only for his own accomplishments, but for how he served as a mentor to Greg.
"He was the perfect son," she said.
Quakers coach Al Bagnoli, in a statement released by the school's communications office, called Ambrogi "one of our shining lights."
"Kyle was a remarkable young man, a true scholar-athlete, an ambassador for Penn, a tremendous teammate and leader on and off the field, as well as a caring and outstanding brother," Bagnoli said. "His loss will be felt for a long time. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family during this time."

Depression is an awful thing that has to be treated. My condolences go out to his family. Especially to teammate and brother, Greg.

This is really sad...depression should not be dealt with lightly. If you know anybody who is going through depression, see if they will seek help, or at least make sure they know you are there for them. These things can't be totally prevented, but if even one sucide is averted, then that would be good.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Two days after one of the best games of his career, Penn running back Kyle Ambrogi committed suicide, the university and police said.

The 21-year-old senior, who died at his suburban Havertown home Monday, had been battling depression, the Daily News reported Wednesday, quoting the player's family.

"I knew my brother had been having some problems," Ambrogi's brother, Greg, a sophomore defensive back on the team, told the paper. "I thought he was getting better. I can't believe it happened. I can't cry yet."

Haverford Township police chief Gary Hoover told The Associated Press that Ambrogi's gunshot death wasn't being investigated as a criminal matter.

Quakers coach Al Bagnoli called the player "one of our shining lights."

"Kyle was a remarkable young man, a true scholar-athlete, an ambassador for Penn, a tremendous teammate and leader on and off the field, as well as a caring and outstanding brother," he said. "His loss will be felt for a long time. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family during this time."

Penn is one of the finest schools in the country. As an Ivy League institution, it offers no athletic scholarships at all. So for this young man to be able to get into Penn, carry the course load there and still find time to play football indicates that he was an exceptional kid. "The perfect son" as his Mom said.

If you're inclined to believe that the good die young, you can point to this tragedy as proof. And if you know anyone who's not himself -- seems withdrawn, too sad for too long, loses weight unexpectedly, etc. -- do everything you can to get that person help. When we suffer from depression we can't see clearly that it is just a disease -- a very treatable disease. We think our world has turned to shit and that there is just no hope. If you see it, get that person help. Untreated, the disease is a killer.

If you have to know, the reason I asked was because my ex-brother-in-law committed suicide b/c of depression. It's a terrible thing to go through.

I was agreeing with everything he said.

Now why don't you go back to the political board and get busy shoving your leftist bullshit down everyone's throats!!!

I was trying to be nice about it, gawd!

It it were me, I wouldn't want some person I've never met to ask me if I have first-hand experience with depression. That's between me and my therapist.
