Russell, who injured his left shoulder Dec. 3, remained in Baton Rouge for treatment and rehabilitation, meaning Matt Flynn will make his first start in Friday's Peach Bowl.

"Nothing's gotten worse," said LSU coach Les Miles. "It just hasn't gotten better fast enough."

LSU coaches and trainers decided Russell should stay in Baton Rouge as a precaution and not participate in any Peach Bowl practices. Russell is the only LSU player who won't be in Atlanta for the game.

LSU (10-2) plays ninth-ranked Miami (9-2) in the Georgia Dome, where Russell suffered a separated shoulder in a 34-14 loss to Georgia.

"I think Matt will play well," Miles said. "I think well be fine at quarterback. Quarterback wont be the issue. It will be a matter of how we play on the offensive line, at running back, on defense and on special teams. We have a quarterback in Matt who can win for us.

Miles said that walk-on Jimmy Welker will serve as Flynn's backup at quarterback against Miami. Welker, who has served as the LSU's scout team quarterback all season, has never played in a college game.

Miles and LSU offensive coordinator Jimbo Fisher could also look to wide receiver Skyler Green and kicker Chris Jackson if needed.

Green -- like Jackson, a quarterback in high school -- took two direct snaps from center against Georgia and spent some time at practice last week throwing the football with the quarterbacks.

lsu will be without there starting qb jamarcus russell he was left at home with a "shoulder injury" if you guys remember russel seperated his left shoulder in the sec championship game. hes a right handed thrower.

im not sure why you wouldnt travel the kid anyway

flynn a 6-3 230lbs soph from texas will start. played 24 games. supposedly challenged russel for the starting job. no real solid pt. but did have a passer rating of over 408 vs north texas on 7 throws.

miami's 3rd leading receiver ryan moore has been suspended and will not travel with the team to the bowl game.

TLANTA -- Miami wide receiver Ryan Moore has been suspended for violating team policy and will not play in the Peach Bowl against No. 10 LSU on Friday night.
Miami coach Larry Coker would not reveal specifically why Moore, who is considering skipping his final season of eligibility to enter the NFL Draft, did not accompany the ninth-ranked Hurricanes to Atlanta this week.
Moore had 28 catches, third-most on the team, for 464 yards and four touchdowns this season. Lance Leggett will likely replace Moore in the starting lineup.
The Hurricanes had their first practice Monday at the Georgia Dome, a 90-minute session. It was Miami's first workout in four days following a break for Christmas.
