Paying the little guys

UGA adds New Mexico State to 2011 schedule | ajc.com

The link to the above story takes you to an article that notes UGA has inked a one and done deal with NM State in 2011 and fans are predictably pissed. Not only does the home schedule that year suck - but we paid an insane amount to get them to Athens.

I'm curious (from a comparison sake) what do the Bucks typically pay little guys to come to OSU stadium? Since you play a MAC team every year - do you have a fixed price?

Also - does anyone know how long your athletic department had to work to get Texas and Southern Cal on the schedule? Apparently Damon Evans (our AD) has been trying like crazy to get Oklahoma and Texas inked to a home and home with minimal success.

If it happened relatively quickly - it's a credit to the excellent history of your program. The Dawgs have to work harder.:frown2:

not sure of any exact numbers, but LSU usually pays anywhere from $450k - $700 (rumored).

We pay Tulane (and whatever other in-state junior high teams we play) enough to keep their athletic department afloat.

Also, every other year, we are kind enough to give Tulane their only "home" sellout. Which ensures they stay above the minimum average to stay D1.
Yeah we take 40K of the 75-40K tickets sold to the games in the Dome, but that still gives Tulane a 20K bigger ticket allotment than if they played anyone else that year. Plus, they get their normal cut of concessions, just that it's for 70+ thou insted of 10-15 thou.

With that said, I really wish we would scrap the in-state charity bit Skip Bertman started. Once in a while? Sure.
But at least 1, sometimes 2-3 a year? Phuck that.
We don't pay astronomical Tradition funds to see La Tech, USL, ULM and phucking Tulane!

Let them get themselves out of their financial ruts. We manage to get by without taking ANY state or tuition money (completely self sufficient athletic department). It shouldn't be up to us to carry all of the peons in the area.

Ditto on UGA Hartman funds. It's gotten so bad that recent grads (2-4 years out of school) who are still in state can't even afford it. I love the Dawgs more than good biscuits and gravy (and I [censored]ing love biscuits and gravy) but I'm not forking over thousands of bucks for the right to buy tickets.

I'll buy em from scalpers or ticket brokers.

Don't really know any 'actuals' but looking at the arithmetic for a 'body bag' game would go like this for the Buckeyes. Ticket sales would generate about $3.6 million (104,000 x $35), and then program, food, parking sales.......paying a team $700,000 would be about 19% of the gross. Not alot of money, as I believe the USC's, Texas's, etc. would do a home-and-home, and keep the home gate at each place, or do a 50/50 revenue split on each game. Anyway, the $700,000 would go along way for a team (Youngstown State, Miami (O), Ohio, etc) toward paying for the rest of the athletic programs (for the non-revenue sports). Appalachian State comes to mind for that 'team up North' to play a body bag game (and Utah the year following). Except the pigeon grew talons and bit Michigan. That's the risk (as well as OSU losing to an Ohio school) you take every time you strap it up.

That's the way it might pencil out from my perspective, anyone else got some solid figures? Jwin? I do know it's a money maker for the big school, and a shot in the arm for the Athletic Dept of the small school.

Where can I get these $35 tickets? Last year I believe they were $62 and when I sent in my check to our local alumni chapter (who gets tickets for 1 game) they were $62. I know student and faculty tickets may be less, but the majority of tickets are $62. So even if you calculate the lower figure for students and faculty you are still looking at a gate of about $5 million/game.

Proves the point even more.......used a conservative figure, but didn't realize how conservative it was....don't know if OSU pays expenses and then $700,000 on top of them or a flat $700,000, which includes expenses. So the Buckeyes take in a $5 million gate, plus, plus, plus, and give out maybe a million to the visitor. Gives them $4 million plus for an afternoon's work. Not bad.

:gobucks3::gobucks4::banger: And SCUM still :scum4:
