P Jesse Mirco (transfer to Vanderbilt)

MIRCO NOW A THREE-STAR
Both the 2021 and 2022 class saw changes this week in the rankings, including the debut of the 2022 composite rankings – which features Ohio State debuting at No. 2 as a class with three top-150 commits.

While there were no major updates for any 2021 commits or targets, one whom we failed to mention was punter Jesse Mirco.

Mirco now has a star rating, as he is listed as a three-star prospect ranked No. 1,868 overall, No. 3 at punter and No. 2 in Australia. He ranks behind only West Bloomfield (Mich.) punter and Wolverines commit Tommy Doman and fellow ProKick Australia punter and Texas commit Isaac Pearson in the positional rankings. Pearson is the lone Australian ranked ahead of Mirco. (All top Australian players listed in the rankings are punters committed to Division I programs.)

Mirco, who plans to enroll at Ohio State in January, will come to the Buckeyes from ProKick Australia, the same program for Australian kickers and punters that developed former Ohio State punter Cameron Johnston, who became one of the best punters in school history and is now entering his third season with the NFL's Philadelphia Eagles.

“I didn’t have to think twice about committing to the best school in the country. I’m super excited to be a Buckeye and be a part of the best college football program in the world,” Mirco told Eleven Warriors after his commitment.

Currently ranked as the No. 4 punter in the recruiting class of 2021, Mirco will likely be in line to succeed current senior Drue Chrisman as Ohio State's punter of the future.

Do you think he'll believe this?

"The punt is the most important play in football, but I think it's for two reasons. One is because of the amount of yardage [involved], but two is the impact if you don't do it well, if you don't protect and it's blocked for a touchdown. That is unbelievable."

3) JESSE MIRCO, PUNTER

With Drue Chrisman headed to the NFL the opportunity will be there for Jesse Mirco. The staff did not bring him to the United States all the way from Australia if they didn’t feel he had great potential. Mirco is the freshman I feel has the best chance to be a starter right away. But it is harder to make a “splash” as a punter than it is at defensive end or running back which is why I have Mirco number 3 on this list rather than No. 1 or No. 2.

Which early enrollee will make the biggest impact? The sure best of which one will get the opportunity from day 1 is Mirco. With Chrisman gone the punter job will be basically handed to him; yeah, maybe he'll have to actually compete (i.e. get token competition) for the job from a walk on.
