Ohio State's Cory Luebke Selected 63rd overall in 2007 Major League Baseball Draft


The junior left-handed pitcher was taken by San Diego in the Supplemental First Round; Luebke was also named to the All-Mideast Region team Thursday


COLUMBUS, Ohio - Ohio State junior left-handed pitcher Cory Luebke was selected 63rd overall by the San Diego Padres in the 2007 Major League Baseball Draft Thursday. Luebke, taken in the Supplemental First Round, has one year of eligibility remaining but could forgo his senior year if he decides to sign with the Padres.
The 6-4, 200-pound Maria Stein, Ohio (Marion Local) native was also named first-team All-Mideast Region Thursday and was earlier named the Big Ten Conference Pitcher of the Year and a unanimous first-team all-conference selection. He was also the Big Ten Tournament Most Outstanding Player.

Luebke was the third highest Buckeye drafted since 1992. Ronnie Bourquin was selected in the second round (50th overall) in 2006, Nick Swisher in the first round (16th overall) in 2002 and Mike Durant in the second round (46th overall) in 1991.

Not many people would turn down a pick that high. Considering what happened to DeLucia, Luebke knows how quick that position can disappear. Not many northern kids go that high. He has the leverage as a junior, I'd be shocked if he turned it down.

Complete win-win situation for Cory. The Padres are a good organization in a great town. They've signed a lot of good young talent the past couple of years so I look for them to be really, really good very soon. Also, if Cory comes back and say improves 10 picks, its not worth it. He could end up in a poor organization and make slightly more money. In my opinion he doesnt have much of a choice here.

Of course, he could come back next season and lead Ohio State to the College World Series!:biggrin:

congrats cory!!! but ill tell ya it would take alot more than just him coming back for osu to make the college world series. todd would actually have to go out and recruit....but i digress....

Ohio State pitcher Cory Luebke spent Thursday on the golf course with his father, Jeff, and his cousin, Buckeyes quarterback Todd Boeckman.
"I didn't want to spend the day in front of a computer, tracking the draft," Luebke said. "It just took my mind off of baseball for awhile. I've been through the draft twice ... and I tried not to think about it too much."

The Padres signed two of their five compensation picks from the June draft plus their second-round pick. Outfielder Kellen Kulbacki (James Madison University) was the 40th overall player taken. Left-handed pitcher Cory Luebke (Ohio State) was the 63rd player selected and Clemson center fielder Bradley Chalk was the 87th

Dunn has 224 homeruns in 6 1/2 years. 530 RBI's and an OBP of .378

I'm not sure Cincy wants to get rid of the only offensive weapon they have.

2007 supplemental first-round pick Cory Luebke pitched three hitless innings and struck out six Friday for SS Single-A Eugene.

Luebke, an Ohio State product, has a 1.46 ERA and a 26/2 K/BB ratio in 24 2/3 innings for Eugene. The left-hander needs a better third pitch if he's going to make it to the majors as a starter. With a pretty good fastball-slider combination, he might fit best as a reliever anyway.

Cory Luebke called home Tuesday night and told his mother to get his father, Jeff, who was mowing the lawn outside.

His mom, Nancy, thought the worst ? Cory had been hurt pitching in Eugene, Ore. What Cory told his parents over the phone was entirely different. Cory told his parents he was coming to pitch in Fort Wayne.

So 25 to 30 family members made the trip from Ohio to see Luebke make his Low Class A debut, a 5-4, 12-inning Beloit win over the Wizards
