PADRES: Luebke looking to make impression

PEORIA, Ariz. -- Left-handed pitcher Cory Luebke was on the outside looking in last spring.

He was in the Padres' major-league camp, but had no chance to make the ballclub.

After a highly successful 2010 season, however, that has changed drastically.

The first four spots in the starting rotation -- Mat Latos, Clayton Richard, Tim Stauffer and Aaron Harang -- are locked up. Luebke, however, is in a battle for the fifth spot with fellow lefty Wade LeBlanc and veteran right-hander Dustin Moseley.

LeBlanc, who was 8-12 with the Padres last season, is the favorite to nail down the last spot.

Moseley, who was 4-4 in 16 appearance -- nine starts -- with the Yankees last season, most likely will make the club as either a starter or long man out of the bullpen.

But Luebke is far from out of the running.

"I try to not get too caught up in decisions that are out of my hands," said the 26-year-old Luebke. "All I can do is get ready for each start, pitch well and see what happens."

What happened last season was that Luebke jumped to the front of the organization's pitching prospects.

A 5-1 start with a 2.40 ERA at Double-A San Antonio, earned him a promotion to Triple-A Portland where he was 5-0 with a 2.97 ERA.

That earned him a promotion to big leagues on Sept. 1.

He won his first big-league game in his second start, retiring 18 of the 21 Dodgers he faced in a six-inning stint.

He appeared in four games for the Padres, going 1-1 with a 4.02 ERA. More impressive was that in 17 2/3 innings, he walked just six and struck out 16.

And in 114 minor-league innings, he allowed just 83 hits, walked 29 and struck out 88.

"Cory pitched well last year, and he's pitching well this spring," said Padres manager Bud Black. "But where he is in his career, we're not sure if we want to drop him into the rotation at the start of the season.

"We could use him out of the bullpen. Toronto did that with Jimmy Key a while back, and that turned out pretty well.

"I don't know if that's something we'd do. Don't know if that would be the case here."

The Padres took Luebke out of Ohio State with a supplemental first-round pick in 2007. So while he's 26, he's still a baby as far as his professional development.

"I'm still kind of new, but I'm much more comfortable this year," Luebke said. "Buddy does a really good job making sure the young guys and the veterans mix.

"That took a lot of the anxiety away when I was called up last year because I knew a lot of the guys. And I wasn't in awe of anyone."

Luebke Makes Padres' Opening Day Roster

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Former Buckeye Cory Luebke made his first Opening Day roster with the San Diego Padres, the organization announced Monday.

The left-hander made his first Major League start last season, going 1-1 with a 4.08 earned-run average and 18 strikeouts in 17.2 innings pitched for the Padres. This spring, the Maria Stein, Ohio, native showed his versatility as both a starter and a reliever but will serve as a long relieve to start the season.

Q: As an Ohio State product, who?s your all-time favorite Buckeyes football player?

A: Archie Griffin. You always knew what you were going to get from him. And he?s the only two-time Heisman Trophy winner.

Q: Wait a minute. You?re 26. Archie won his Heismans in ?74 and ?75. You never saw him play. Modern day Buckeyes, who?s your favorite?

A: (Linebacker) A.J. Hawk. He always electrified the building.

Q: You were a three-sport football, basketball and baseball star at Marion Local High School. Which was your favorite?

A: Probably basketball. Compared to the other sports, you can control a lot more of what?s going on out there. In baseball, when things are going wrong, more effort doesn?t always equal greater success.

Long outing is no problem for Luebke
By Corey Brock / MLB.com | 04/11/11

SAN DIEGO -- Cory Luebke was set to rejoin the ranks of fresh relievers in the bullpen after two days off following a four-inning stint in Friday's suspended game against the Dodgers.

Luebke entered the game in the second inning after the second of four rain delays and after the Padres decided that the one hour and 34 minute delay was too long for starter Clayton Richard to return.

Enter the left-handed Luebke, a starter until late in Spring Training when the team opted to move him into the bullpen.

The four-inning outing against the Dodgers, when Luebke allowed one unearned run on four hits with two walks and five strikeouts, saw Luebke throw 65 pitches.

"It hasn't been that long, so I haven't gotten out of that starter's routine," Luebke said. "But coming in with a runner on ... it felt more like a relief appearance.

"But it was good to help the guys out."

Luebke learning lessons in bullpen

Padres pitcher Corey Luebke is getting used to pitching out of the bullpen.

DENVER ? Cory Luebke was raised in Maria Stein, Ohio, about 78 miles from Cincinnati. He grew up worshipping the Reds.

On April 12, he faced his hometown team. It was not pretty.

With the game tied 2-2 in the 11th, Luebke gave up one walk, one double, a home run, four singles and six earned runs, absorbing the loss in an 8-2 defeat.

A friend texted him after the game, saying, ?I know you used to like the Reds but you didn?t have to give ?em six. It could have been one or two.?

Of the experience, Luebke said, ?What doesn?t kill you makes you stronger.?

Going into Friday?s game against Colorado, since the Reds outing Luebke hadn?t permitted a run in 10 appearances, spanning 13 1/3 innings.

?He likes to play,? said manager Bud Black. ?He like?s getting after it. As far as total body of work, I?ve been impressed.?

Luebke started 74 of his 84 minor league games. Working from the bullpen this season has been a continued learning process, most prominently learning a new game-day routine.

He learned a significant lesson against Cincinnai: not to get down on himself after giving up a couple runs early in an inning.

?The players are too good in this league to be thinking about anything other than how to get the next guy out,? Luebke said.

Take away the Cincinnati game and Luebke would be 1-0 with a 0.96 ERA.

In flurry of moves, Padres put Luebke in rotation
Posted on: June 21, 2011
By Evan Brunell

The Padres optioned Wade LeBlanc to the minor leagues on Tuesday in a series of roster moves, clearing the way for rookie reliever Cory Luebke to join the starting rotation, MLB.com reports.

Luebke tossed 50 pitches in relief of LeBlanc on Monday, quieting the Red Sox for two runs over 3 1/3 innings. The lefty has posted a strong 3.23 ERA and 1.00 WHIP over 39 2/3 innings, striking out 43 and walking 15, so he deserves an extended look in the rotation. Assuming he fills LeBlanc's spot, he will oppose Tim Hudson on Sunday in Atlanta. Luebke had four starts down the stretch last season with a 4.08 ERA and also boasts a career minor-league ERA of 3.49, so he's a promising player.

Daily Update: Notes On Luebke, two-hitter, etc.; minors

By Bill Center, Reporter - Padres

Monday, June 27, 2011

Cory Luebke not only allowed only one hit over five shutout innings Sunday afternoon, he extended his scoreless streak against Atlanta to 11 2/3 innings.

He had previously worked 6 2/3 scoreless innings of relief against the Braves in four appearances in the first two series between the teams.

In 11 2/3 innings against the Braves this season, Luebke allowed six hits and two walks against 14 strikeouts while pitching shut out baseball.

Luebke gave up one of the two hits the Braves got Sunday. That was the fewest hits allowed by the Padres staff in a game this season and the fewest since they also allowed two at the New York Mets on June 10, 2010.

The last time the Padres pitching staff allowed two hits in a game at Petco Park was against the Los Angeles Dodgers on May 16, 2010.

SEATTLE ? Sometimes, less is more.

Case in point: the Padres? 1-0 win over the Seattle Mariners on Saturday night at Safeco Field.

Clearly, the less on the pitching end was more.

Starter Cory Luebke, who has yet to allow a run over 11 innings in two starts, and relievers Chad Qualls, Mike Adams and Heath Bell combined on the Padres? second two-hitter and fourth shutout of the season.

Luebke throws well for Padres in loss

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ? Cory Luebke continues to make a comfortable switch back into the starting rotation. Even after allowing his first runs as a starter this season, the left-hander was in control.

"They got guys in scoring position and I didn't execute two pitches," Luebke said after the San Diego Padres' 2-1 loss to the San Francisco Giants on Thursday night. "It ended up costing us the game."

After winning the first two games of the series with their NL West rivals, the Padres dropped two one-run decisions. They have still won 10 of their last 15 games.

Luebke has been working to add a curveball to his repertoire and it was a curve that Eli Whiteside hit for a home run to give the Giants a 1-0 lead in the third inning.

"It was something I started working on in spring training," Luebke said. "It wasn't a terrible pitch. He just stayed back and hit it out of the park. It was probably not the right pitch to throw but that happens."

He also made a sixth-inning mistake to Pat Burrell, who took advantage and singled home a run to make it 2-0.

"I had a chance to get to get out of that," Luebke said. "I didn't execute the pitch on 0-2."

Luebke struck out a career-high eight and walked one in his six innings. He allowed five hits and two runs.

"He threw the ball well," Padres manager Bud Black said. "His fastball had life, he threw a couple of good curves and he's building his pitch count. He pitches aggressively and with a good tempo."

Daily Update: Luebke continues fast start as a starter, notes, minors

By Bill Center, Reporter - Padres

Sunday, July 17, 2011

Left-hander Cory Luebke held the Giants to two runs on four hits over seven innings Saturday night and is now 2-1 as a starter with a 1.50 earned run average in four starts.

The seven innings was Luebke?s longest outing of the season and his 104 pitches were also a season high for the 26-year-old Ohio State product.

As a starter, Luebke has 26 strikeouts against four walks in 24 innings. Opposing hitters have a .148 against Luebke as a starter.

Two of the four runs he has allowed as a starter are solo homers by the Giants Eli Whitside (on July 7 in San Francisco) and Miguel Tejada (Saturday night).

Luebke brings the heartland to the hill

Padres pitcher Cory Luebke has moved from the bullpen to the starting rotation. ? Sean M. Haffey / U-T

He was, as he humbly puts it, ?The Lucky Kid.?

Cory Luebke?s dad was a basketball coach at the only area high school serving six towns, Marion Local, so he had the key to the gymnasium. That's like the key to the universe to an young athlete growing up in the Midwest, often still snowbound and sub-freezing when baseball season rolls around.

?Either you went into the gym to throw,? said Luebke, ?or you?d bundle up and go outside and try not to lose your ball in the snow.?

There was something poetic in the way Luebke, the impressive Padres? rookie pitcher who?ll start Friday?s series opener at Philadelphia, described his blue-collar upbringing on the Ohio side of the Indiana border. In major leagues full of warm-weather products who grew up playing baseball year-round in California and Florida, Texas and Arizona, the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico, Luebke literally had to shovel and dig and literally work his way to The Show.

?Mostly farming,? said Luebke, asked about his stoplight-free hometown of Maria Stein, Ohio. ?I grew up working on a few different farms. I was pretty much cheap labor, lots of baling hay. My mom (Nancy) and dad (Jeff) sat me and my brother down at an early age and said, ?We?ve got to start saving up for college.? So we worked.

?During the summers, you?re up at 6:30 to go lift (weights) for football, then it?s off to work at 8:30, work all day, play a baseball game and go to open gym after the game. That?s every day, all summer. When I look back, I think, man, how?d I have the energy to do all that? But it was so enjoyable.?

Daily Update: Luebke has worst start of 2011; notes, minors
By Bill Center, Reporter - Padres
Thursday, July 28, 2011

Left-hander Cory Luebke had his worst outing this season as a starter Wednesday night.

Luebke gave up four runs on six hits in six-plus innings. All four runs scored on three homers as Luebke became only the Padres second starter to give up three home runs in a game this season.

The homer included two tape-measure, solo blasts by Justin Upton and a two-run shot by former Padre Xavier Nady ? accounting for all four Diamondbacks runs.

Luebke, who had allowed only three homers all season coming into the game, saw his ERA as a starter climb from 1.86 to 2.57. He had allowed no more than two earned runs in any of his first five starts.

The only other Padres starter to give up three homers in a game this season was Aaron Harang on April 26. Ironically, both three-homer games came at Petco Park.

Luebke focus split before another strong start

Cory Luebke was trying to get ready to start Sunday afternoon?s game against the Marlins at Petco Park when he kept finding his attention diverted.

Like the rest of his teammates, Luebke was watching the Trevor Hoffman ceremonies ? most of the time from the Padres first-base dugout.

?It was a special day,? said Luebke. ?At the same time, I?ve got work to do.?

Then they played the national anthem.

?I was about to tear up,? said Luebke. ?If that didn?t get to you, you have a screw loose. Then I started to get worried. ?Don?t give up five runs in the first and ruin this day.??

Luebke didn?t.

In fact, the left-hander didn?t allow a baserunner until Mike Stanton?s two-out homer in the fourth.

He allowed only two other hits as his earned run average as a starter fell to 2.71. Opposing hitters are bitting .201 against Luebke in his 11 starts. And over 66 1/3 innings as a starter, Luebke has 69 strikeouts compared to 14 walks.

Sunday he struck out eight without issuing a walk, although he was finished after six innings when his pitch count reached 103. ?I?d love to get more early-count grounders,? said Luebke.

?Cory?s got a very aggressive mindset,? said Black. ?His curve and change are coming along. I think you?re going to be seeing more of those pitches in the future.?

MLB - San Diego Padres - PlayerWatch
Reuters
September 14, 2011

LHP Cory Luebke allowed two runs on 10 hits over six innings Tuesday night against the Giants. He didn't issue a walk while striking out eight. He relied a lot more on his secondary pitches while working out of jams. "Every time he goes out there, Cory learns and makes strides," said Padres manager Bud Black. "He made some strides with his secondary pitches tonight." "I didn't make it easy," said Luebke. "I definitely went to my off-speed pitches more in situations. I had more balance with my curves and changeups. I had to figure out ways to get out of jams. It was definitely a good learning experience."
