Right-hander Alex Wimmers, the Twins' first-round draft pick in 2010, underwent a surgical procedure about a week ago to decompress the radial nerve in his throwing elbow.
Wimmers, who returned from Tommy John surgery to throw 15 innings in the Gulf Coast League, dealt with irritation in his elbow during instructional league, which ended Oct. 8. He remains in Fort Myers rehabbing his elbow and is expected to be ready for the start of spring training.
Twins farm director Brad Steil said it's not uncommon for Tommy John surgery patients to experience similar irritation after they return to action.
Wimmers, taken 21st overall out of Ohio State and signed for $1.332 million, turns 25 on Nov. 1. Wimmers has been limited to 77 1/3 pro innings (4.31 earned-run average) and one start above Class A due to injury issues.
