Twins pitching prospect Alex Wimmers finds his way again

While the Twins were going through one of the worst seasons in franchise history, their 2010 first-round draft pick was going through something even worse. Alex Wimmers couldn't find the plate and, frankly, couldn't find himself.

"It was a crazy experience. It was a bad experience. But it turned into a good one," he said.

Wimmers, 23, had experienced little but success in his pitching career until one night last April, when he made his first start for Class A Fort Myers and walked the first six batters he faced.

"It wasn't even close," he said.

Shocked and shaken, Wimmers was pulled not just from the game but from competition. Sitting on an earned-run average of infinity, the two-time Big Ten pitcher of the year from Ohio State didn't pitch again until mid-July. By season's end, he had a no-hitter under his belt.

"At the end of the season, I was myself," Wimmers said Saturday from TwinsFest at the Metrodome. "I guess it took me a little bit to get back to normal. I did what I could to get back to that position. Once you sit back and think a minute, and realize the gift you've been given, and don't take everything for granted. ... There's a reason why some things happen. You just have to do the best you can to make the best of it."

Twins' Wimmers overcomes the yips

FORT MYERS, Fla. ? When the Minnesota Twins made Alex Wimmers a first-round draft pick out of Ohio State in 2010, scouts raved about his pinpoint command and feel for pitching, which made the events of last April 11 all the more puzzling.

Wimmers, a two-time Big Ten Pitcher of the Year, not only couldn?t throw strikes in his season debut for Class A Fort Myers, he couldn?t feel the ball.

?I honestly don?t know when it happened, but it did,? Wimmers said this week. ?I just woke up overnight, I guess, and couldn?t throw. It really feels like your whole body?s numb, and you can?t control anything.?

The Twins had hoped Wimmers would climb quickly through their system, as 2009 first-round pick Kyle Gibson had a year earlier, advancing from Class A to Class AAA. Catcher Danny Rams had heard all about Wimmers? precision and couldn?t wait to see it.

?The first pitch he threw, literally, went halfway up the backstop behind me,? Rams said. ?He couldn?t find it after that. He was throwing it up, down, in, out. The only time he threw a strike is when he threw it like 80 miles per hour, just lobbing it in there.?

Best Pitcher (Upper Levels) ? Alex Wimmers who moves up to AA New Britain this year after a season at Ft. Myers hopes to build off of the late season success from 2011. Wimmers who started 2011 by walking six batters is hoping that his control issues from last season remain in the past. Wimmers only pitched 40.2 innings in A+ last season in addition to the added competition of AA, Wimmers will need to log a bunch of innings. If Wimmers can get back to his 2010 form it?s not unreasonable to expect him to move up to AAA by the end of the season.

Minnesota Twins' 2010 first-round pick Alex Wimmers has tear in elbow ligament

SEATTLE - Alex Wimmers, the Twins' 2010 first-round draft pick, is "on hold" because of what assistant general manager Rob Antony called a "very slight tear" in his ulnar collateral ligament.

"He's kind of in a holding pattern, not doing too much right now," Antony said Saturday, May 5, before the Twins played a late game against the Mariners at Safeco Field.

Wimmers, 23, was one of the best college pitchers in baseball when the Twins took him with the 21st pick of the 2010 amateur draft. He was a two-time Big Ten pitcher of the year at Ohio State, and threw the Buckeyes' first nine-inning no-hitter as a senior.

But his pro career has sputtered. After signing late in the summer of 2010, he breezed through four starts, going 2-0 with an 0.57 earned-run average, and seemed to be on his way. But his first full pro season started inauspiciously when he walked the first six batters in his first game of 2011. That landed him on the disabled list.

The right-hander eventually pitched 40? ? innings with the Class A Fort Myers Miracle, and tossed a seven-inning no-hitter in August, earning a promotion to Class AA New Britain this season. But he made only one four-inning start for the Rock Cats and has been at the team's training facility in Fort Myers, Fla., ever since.

"He is on hold," Antony said. "He's in a stabilizer, and when he was examined, there was a very slight tear in the UCL but it wasn't a surgical situation. So they wanted to put him in a stabilizer
and then re-examine him."

Twins prospect Alex Wimmers will get rehab, not surgery, on elbow
By John Shipley

Twins prospect Alex Wimmers will not have surgery on his injured elbow, general manager Terry Ryan said Sunday, May 13. Instead, he will use therapy and rehab to come back from a small tear in his ulnar collateral ligament.

Wimmers, 23, was examined by Twins orthopedist Daniel Buss in the Twin Cities on Wednesday.

"Just to give us a hands-on look," Ryan said.

The Twins' 2010 first-round draft pick was diagnosed by doctors at Class AA New Britain as having what the team is calling "a slight tear" in his UCL. He was sent to the team's facilities in Fort Myers, Fla., to rehab and will continue with that course.

"We wanted to look at him," Ryan said. "We're going to do therapy rehab. I sat with him for an hour. He's frustrated, just because he's not pitching."

Three of the first five questions were about righthander Alex Wimmers. I didn't have an update at the time but I checked in with a couple Twins officials and have one now.

Wimmers hasn't pitched since Apr. 9. He has a slight tear of the ulnar collateral ligament in his elbow but doctors determined that he didn't need Tommy John surgery. He's rehabilitating the elbow in Fort Myers for another month, then will give it a try. We'll see how that goes....

Setback for Wimmers

Ryan said that righthander Alex Wimmers, the Twins' first- round draft pick in 2010, is going to have another MRI on his right elbow. Wimmers pitched two-thirds of an inning last Monday for the Twins rookie team in the Gulf Coast League but "it didn't go well," Ryan said.

It's another setback for Wimmers, who overcame severe control problems last season to finish the season strong. He made one start for Class AA New Britain but was placed on the disabled list because of a strained elbow. He received two opinions about his elbow, both recommending rehab, before trying to pitch last week.

Twins prospect Wimmers may need Tommy John surgery
Article by: JOE CHRISTENSEN and La VELLE E. NEAL IIII , Star Tribune staff writers
Updated: July 31, 2012

The 2010 first-round draft pick might have to undergo elbow ligament replacement surgery.

For the second year in a row, the Twins face the prospect of having a former top draft pick undergo Tommy John reconstructive elbow surgery.

Last September, 2009 first-round pick Kyle Gibson had the procedure. And now, 2010 first-round pick Alex Wimmers is heading to Minnesota to meet with team doctors after having another setback with his right elbow.

"He threw last week, and I thought we were on our way," General Manager Terry Ryan said Tuesday. "He just didn't feel right."

Wimmers, 23, overcame major control issues last year and tossed a no-hitter for Class A Fort Myers. The Twins moved him to Class AA New Britain this year, but he strained the elbow in his first start.

Now, the word within the organization is that he will need Tommy John surgery, though Ryan doesn't want to assume anything.

"He wouldn't be coming up here [for the medical exam] if it was any good," Ryan said. "It's something we think is serious enough for our people to see him here local, again."

Alex Wimmers has Tommy John
Updated: August 2, 2012
Associated Press

MINNEAPOLIS -- Alex Wimmers is the latest Minnesota Twins pitching prospect sent for Tommy John surgery.

The Twins said Wimmers had the ligament replacement operation on his right elbow performed Thursday in Minneapolis by team physician Dr. Dan Buss.

The right-hander was Minnesota's first-round draft pick in 2010, out of Ohio State, but he has logged only 62 1-3 innings in the minors. He's been plagued by both control and arm problems. Wimmers made only two starts this season, one for the Gulf Coast League rookie-level team and one for Double-A New Britain.

What ever happened to starting pitcher Alex Wimmers? Is he still with the organization?
-- Frank B., St. Paul, Minn.

Wimmers, the club's first-round pick in the 2010 First-Year Player Draft, underwent Tommy John surgery on Aug. 2 and is currently rehabbing his right elbow.

He was diagnosed with an ulnar collateral ligament strain earlier in the season before ultimately suffering a setback in late July.

It's been a rough go for Wimmers, who was considered to be one of the more polished arms in his Draft class after starring at Ohio State. He's struggled with his control, and just when it seemed like he was getting back on track last season, he had to have Tommy John surgery.

But I've heard his rehab process is going well, and the success rate for the surgery is very high. So the Twins still have hope he can be part of the big league rotation in the future, but his star isn't quite as bright as when he was first drafted.
