It robbed both teams. Florida came out and dominated a tough Iowa team for most of the game, and may very well have held off a great comeback.

Instead, Iowa was taken out of the game by the referee, and Florida's victory is cheapened by that call (and the others). The florida players looked almost as somber as the Iowa ones after the game ended.

Iowa got hosed for sure. I agree with the above poster that said that scUM-Neb was bad throughout for both, but this one was all against Iowa.

FWIW, Wisky got hosed on their 1t half FG drive. They got three bad spots in a row. On the long run that should've been a first and goal inside the one, they spotted it as first and goal at the three. The only problem was that the runner didn't step out at the three. On the next two plays, Wisky ran the ball for about a yard gain on each play, but the refs kept spotting it back at the three for no gain each time. On third and goal from the three, Wiscy was simply stopped short, but the ball should never have been back there anyway.

Speilman's color commentary

Did you guys catch the florida/iowa game? after the onside kick spielman was LIVID about the bogus offsides call (and the officiating in general) and bashed the officials... the other announcer tried to "soften" the diss but CS wouldn't let up on those Sh*t refs... about time someone calls it like it is!! That was a horrendous call...why wasn't it reviewed? b/c it is a judgement call? it was so obviously the wrong call.

Speilman may not be the most polished announcer but by god I learn more listening to him call a game than any other announcer.

The guy wears his heart on his sleeve and it's nice to see an announcer "tell it how it is."

There is no way in hell offsides is a judgement call (there is a physical line and a physical player...), it should have been reviewed and overturned.

Iowa could have won this game, the officials robbed them of the chance.

You didn't mention the penalty for tackling though, the fake helmet to helmet call that let Florida score a touchdown to close the 1st half.

you're right he is not big game polished but it is refreshing when an announcer gets PISSED-OFF and tosses the P.C. stance when the game he loves is subjected to horrid officiating... and i'm sure all of us have seen him play back in the day (or at least seen film) he loves football!! The problem is he'll probably get reprimanded for this!

Review of Outback officiating kept secret
By TOM WITOSKY

January 12, 2006

Conference USA officials have completed their review of the controversial officiating of the 2006 Outback Bowl, but won't make the conclusions public.

Russ Anderson, assistant commissioner for media relations, said the review's results will be kept confidential in compliance with the conference's policy regarding all reviews of game officiating. A Conference USA crew officiated the Outback Bowl.

"We review the officiating in every football game in which we have a crew," Anderson said. "But we have never made those reviews public and won't this time."

Anderson indicated that the report has been shared with others, but wouldn't say specifically to whom the report had been given.

A spokesman for the Big Ten Conference said he wasn't sure whether the conference office had received a copy of the report.

Several calls during Florida's 31-24 victory over Iowa on Jan. 1 set off a firestorm of criticism and controversy among Hawkeye fans. Much of the furor surrounded the offsides call from an onside kick near the end of the game.

Replays appear to show that no Iowa player was offsides on the play and Iowa should have been allowed to keep possession of the ball with a little more than 1 minute left in the game.

Gerald Austin, coordinator of the Conference USA officials, told the Des Moines Register last week that a penalty should not have been called.

Austin also said there were four other plays to be reviewed, but declined to say which ones. The crew was criticized during the game by television commentators for failing to flag Florida for having too many men on the field, as well as a roughing call at the end of the first half.

Anderson also said he didn't know if any member of the officiating crew had been sanctioned.

Bob Bowlsby, Iowa athletic director, said Tuesday he has not seen any report regarding the officiating in the game and doesn't expect to receive one.

"This is a situation where the conferences will handle it and we will move on," Bowlsby said.

But Bowlsby said the controversy will likely spur bowl officials and the various conferences to review how officiating crews are selected.

"The best we can do now is improve on the process for selection of officiating crews to make sure we are doing what we can to avoid these situations in the future," Bowlsby said.

NCAA officials told the Register that the topic of crew selection and evaluation will be part of the NCAA's spring meetings.
