Everybody is somebody else's weirdo.
Re: Knight also doesn't think much of Mike Davis, his successor with the Hoosiers. Indiana missed the NCAA Tournament for the second straight year, and the Hoosiers lost in the first round of the NIT.

"They created that for themselves," Knight said in the Sporting News Radio interview. "The guy that's coaching there [Mike Davis] is a guy that I told Pat [Knight, his son and assistant coach] we were going to replace at the end of the season. There's no way that I would have kept the guy any longer than that. [But] That's their [Indiana] problem."

I've always liked Coach Knight and still do. Currently to his credit; look what he is doing with his Texas Tech team this year. He is in the sweet 16 with a lot less talent than several teams that have already been elininated. He'll go down in history as one of the all time greatest NCAA basketball coaches; and well as part of the greatest ever Ohio State basketball recruiting class and problably Ohio State basketball's most celebrated bench warmer. However, in this case I think he was out of line in commenting that Mike Davis should be fired. I'm not saying Davis should or shouldn't be fired. I'm just saying this is an Indiana decision that Knight (as a former Indiana and current Texas Tech coach) doesn't need to weigh in on. Especially when he is not supporting his former assistant coach. If Knight is such an expert on Davis' coaching ability why did he hire him as his assistant in the first place?

I agree wholeheartedly. His behavior has attracted far more attention than his accomplishments and he will go down as one of the most successful and controversial coaches ever in college basketball.

Commenting as he did may have reflected more badly on him than on Davis in many people's eyes. He just didn't need to do it.

Robert Mongomery will never keep his yap shut... and as much as the comments will raise questions about Davis, they were most certainly directed at IU, and what idiots they were for hiring the guy in the first place. He would isult Myles Brand's dog for crapping in a park if he thought people would blame Brand for not cleaning it up.

Bobby Knight may raise some hackles every time he opens his mouth, but his accomplishments also speak for themselves--including yet another Sweet-16 run this year. He's highly opinionated and painfully open with those opinions, and that's part of what makes him so great: he's old-school, not some pansy PC coach who has nothing bad to say about the school that unceremoniously fired him after 30 years. And hey, does anybody really thing Davis has done a great job, particularly with the resources and tradition of a school like IU?

I don't see where he said he should be fired. He just said, "The guy that's coaching there is a guy that I told Pat we were going to replace at the end of the season. There's no way that I would have kept the guy any longer than that." Big difference between saying "We were going to replace him" and "I think the guy should be fired." And yes, I think he does have the right to weigh in on factors that affect Indiana basketball...he's clearly earned it.

The way I understood the comment was that Knight was referring to his last season at IU and that he wanted to let Davis go after that season (Before he got the axe)

On a somewhat related note, Davis will not be fired...
Indiana AD says Davis will remain coach

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (AP) - Mike Davis will remain Indiana's basketball coach, resolving doubts that persisted throughout the Hoosiers' disappointing season.

<li>Knight rips into IU coach

A written statement from athletic director Rick Greenspan included a warning that IU's 29-29 record over the past two seasons needs to improve. The Hoosiers went 15-14 this season, which ended with a 67-60 loss to Vanderbilt in the first round of the NIT.

Greenspan said Tuesday that he and Davis met in recent days and are committed to returning Indiana basketball to the country's upper echelons.

"While we share this common goal and are both confident that it will be reached, we also know that our record the last two years is not up to the standards to which Indiana is accustomed and to which we aspire," Greenspan said. "This is why we have set ambitious and achievable goals for next season of competing at a very high level in the Big Ten conference and successfully competing in the NCAA tournament."

Davis, who has three years left on his contract, has a record of 96-67 in five seasons since he took over for Bob Knight.

Davis led the Hoosiers to the 2002 national championship game during his second season, but his teams have missed the NCAA tournament the last two years. Indiana's 14-15 record during the 2003-04 season was the school's first losing season since 1969-70.

"I think that our non-conference slate and our success in Big Ten play have only helped our basketball team to grow and mature," Davis said in the school's statement. "The future of Indiana basketball is certainly bright, and I am excited to be a part of it."

Hate to say it, but Knight is right. Davis had absolutely no qualifications that would ordinarily be necessary to obtain the job he did, except for the fact he was there at the time. And now that the "team is his", it is clear to see the result...and he has the NIT appearances to prove it. In my opinion, the only reason they haven't fired him after this year is because they don't want to look like they made a mistake cutting Knight lose when and how they did, and they would almost be admitting as much by canning the guy they hired to replace him.

Knight is one of the greatest coaches ever....and Davis shouldn't have ever gotten a DI job when and how he did. I don't think the comments are out of line, though they reflect poorly on Knight because it looks like he's taking it out on "poor Mike Davis" instead of the IU brass.

C'mon guys. People were saying the same stuff(fire him) about RMK before he left because they kept getting bounced in the first weekend of the tourney. Also don't forget Davis made it to the championship game in his career, he's not a complete waste of space.

I know Jax, but that was Knight's team. Davis' recruiting and the control of the program are now on display, and the results are clear. Knight lost in the first round several times, which is arguably why he was fired in the first place, but he also won several Championships. Davis can't get a free pass for the rest of his career because he made the Championship Game once with a team he had nothing to do with putting together.

I'm not picking on you at all Jax, and I'm not calling you out for your opinion, I respect it...I'm more just tired of all the media types who don't like Knight and continually prop up a coach that in any other case would be consider a colossal failure. Guthridge took UNC to 2 Final Fours and was forced out...a move that was condoned by many of the same media "elites" who are propping up Davis now.

No argument from me, I don't think much of Davis at all and I'm fairly fond of Knight.

I was just making a point to keep it in perspective. There were many saying that Knight was over the hill before all the BS surrounding his dissmissal and no one gets to a Final 4/champ game with anyone's players that isn't at least a decent coach.

Problem for Davis is he has to follow the legend and "decent" isn't good enough at IU regardless.
