Besides scUM, game that worries you the most

Michigan State seems to always play us tough.
I agree that they have almost always played us tough, but this year Sparty is in shambles. The coach is a lame duck and the rest of the team is completely demoralized. On top of that they just lost their RB for the season, and it's only gonna get worse after tsun whomps on them this weekend. I think the "toughest" game will be Minny, but none will be even remotely close.

If they lose to scUM, that's another reason that they'll play us tough. After three straight loses, they'll want to save the season...last year's revenge or find whatever reason to lift up their game.

I think MSU will be the toughest game for us.

Smith has said he doesn't know how to motivate these guys anymore. That is almost like permission to quit. It is also right where they were under Williams his last year. The only thing that kept them from finishing with 7 straight Ls then was Indiana.

Unless they actually win their game against Michigan - a much bigger rival for them - I say they fold their tents.

I think MSU. But, being the number one team in the land has it's disadvantages too. Everyone wants to be the spoiler.

And let several other poster's ahead of me said. MSU's coach has basiclly given up. Quite honestly, the Spartans would be crazy to keep him. (Unless, they just don't care and want him to finish out the season.)

Michigan is their rivalry game. That being so, MSU will make some kind of "last stand." I know 2 things, however. If they beat Michigan, there is no way in hell they'll be ready for Ohio State. If the lose to Michigan, they still won't be ready for Ohio State.

Although, I will say that Michigan State is probably the hardest game OSU has left until Michigan, regardless. I'd like to say Minnesota is, but their D is absolutely horrid.

If it comes to a vbet, I'll borrow against the house and bet on MSU. Those guys have more personalities than any schizophrenic (sp?), and you're right! coming off of a heartbreaking loss to ND, a disappointing loss to Illini, and getting creamed by Meatchicken (this week end), they'll either show up as a bad high school team, or come out roaring (with nothing to lose), especially if John L. has already been given his pink slip by the administration (which most of us seem to fully expect).

I too remember that last ditch pass in 98 that was knocked away to knock OSU out of the national championship game (forgot the 74 one though - getting old, I guess). MSU seems to have a 'thing' about the Buckeyes, and they DO play us tough. Maybe it's all the Ohio boys that matriculate North to Lansing, or just because they can (or used to anyway) beat us when they stumbled against Michigan (during the Cooper years).

Sorry for being loquacious, but MSU will loom large. However, that being said......I don't think that Tress will allow them to be 'down' for ANY game, (He's waaaaay too good a gameday coach and motivator), and additionally, with the substitution patterns I am seeing this year, the #2's and #3's will come in fired up to make an impression, and will provide the fire that maybe the #1's will not show.

Really I think it will be Minnesota. Not saying they will win but the might have the most success. Our defensive weakness is still the run and that is the one thing Minnesota will do, try to shove the run down our throats. Yes they don't have a defense to stop us but I don't see another offense that might challenge us. But one thing for sure is the Minnesota running game will let us know how much our defense has grown and if we are ready for that team up north on November 18th.

One thing we have to keep in mind that no matter how bad any of these teams are or how many "heartbreaking" loses they have beating us will make up for it tenfold! We are going to get everyones best shot from here on out. That said, if we stay focused I still think we kill everyone.

14&0 has it right. We're going to be the one everyone is gunning for. Beating the #1 Buckeyes will be a season highlight, so we're going to get their best shot. Still say that we'll be 'up' because of Coach Tress (and the assistant coaches), but mostly because of the extra playing time for the 2's and 3's. If the 1's aren't 'performing', the coaching staff won't hesitate to put in an entire line, set of LBs, etc. They did it against Texas (in a tight game!) and it worked, so why not against Illinois, MSU, BG, or IU?

They might be 'down' because much of their game plan will be geared toward Nov 18 (Meatchicken), and won't be running the new offense (?) or defense (?) 'looks' that they'll throw at UM.

Let's pray that the Buckeyes get the opponents down early, and let the second and third teamers get in EARLY, so there are ZERO injuries to the starters or key back-ups. A bad hit on Troy, Teddy, Gonzo, Pittman, O-line, PItcock, Patterson, Little Animal could spell trouble......

Comments from Jeff Amey in his weekly column over on O-Zone. Pretty much sums up my thoughts on the challenge ahead.

"Now that the tough month of September is over, the difficulty with this team is going to be keeping them hungry. The next six games on the schedule look to be some fairly bland fare, with the toughest of them looking to be a reeling Michigan State team that just lost to Illinois. In the past (pre-Tressel), this would be the point where I would be concerned about a let-down, but with this team, I don't get that sense. With every game that goes by, more and more I see a better version of the 2002 Ohio State Buckeyes. This just looks like a team that is going to refuse to lose. Good times."

Good times, indeed!

My concern is that OSU is good enough to win and win handily without improving every week. You can go through the motions, but sometimes you have to have that palpable challenge to really step up. I think we are clearly the best right now and that is to a degree because of our tough schedule. It is a long way to that next real challenge. He could whip an IU 47-3 without improving to the extent that Michigan may to get ready for Iowa on that same date. I would love to see the Illini or Minne really step it up between now and when we take them on.
