OT Ethan Onianwa (Official Thread)

There are people who disagree with your assessment.

That was over a full season ago. Can’t really get any new info from that one.
Maybe this explains it and he had a better 2024. Maybe that was just a bad game. I watched the last video showing all of his snaps from the Texas game and he got beat repeatedly in passing downs at the beginning of the game and at the end. Better in the middle. Several times he doubled a defender inside with the RG while a pass rusher outside of him ran unchecked to the QB. Other times he just got beat. I didn’t count them but about 1/3 of the passing downs he got beat pretty quick. Rice didn’t play any power teams this year to compare.

Yeah, I'd like to see some 2024 film on him. The tools are obviously there tho and seeing what Frye did with Simmons and even Donovan at LT should give us optimism he can hold it down at LT

With the hold he threw on that Texas guy, no wonder he permitted zero (or one) hurries. Seriously, hope these guys enter winter quarter (to tOSU), so they can get their Coach Mick looksee. I'm a Mick fan, and it shows on the players physiques after he gets them in his program. Can only make them better. Then going against tOSU lines hat-to-hat.

ESPN gives a surprising candidate for Ohio State's top incoming transfer addition

They opted for the former tackle, Onianwa. Here is their analysis.

The defending national champs are dealing with some significant offensive changes for 2025 with offensive coordinator Chip Kelly, offensive line coach Justin Frye and eight starters moving on to the NFL.

Replacing starting offensive tackles Josh Simmons and Josh Fryar was a serious need for the Buckeyes during the portal window, and they landed two promising prospects in Onianwa and Minnesota transfer Phillip Daniels. The experience Onianwa brings to the table, as a three-year starter who has played more than 2,200 career snaps, makes him an essential piece of the puzzle for an Ohio State offensive line that had to overcome injuries and depend on inexperienced depth during their title run.
The 6-foot-6, 345-pounder was a good pick. He saw a huge improvement in play from 2022 and 2023 to 2024 after moving from right tackle to left tackle. He allowed only one sack and eight pressures in 350 pass-blocking snaps and was graded as a decent run blocker by PFF.

It seems more likely than not that Onianwa will win the left tackle job, and fellow incoming tackle Daniels will take the right tackle spot. That would leave Luke Montgomery and Tegra Tshabola as the clubhouse favorites at guard, and then Josh Padilla and Ian Moore would compete at center.

Onianwa's inclusion makes sense and he's a good player. He'll at least be an above-average pass-blocker and decent enough run-blocker to justify taking him over and forcing a redshirt freshman on the field.

Don’t forget Carson Hinzman who will likely start at Center. Is possible he kicks out to a guard position.

Ohio State Buckeyes transfer portal addition is already making an impact, but Ryan Day has one request for him

Ohio State was not as aggressive in the transfer portal this time around as they were last offseason.

The Buckeyes added what could be three new starters with TE Max Klare, OT Phillip Daniels, and OT Ethan Onianwa. Other than that, the Buckeyes filled out depth in a couple of pieces.

Ohio State began spring practice on Monday and it was the first time that the 2025 team got together for a practice. Following the first session, head coach Ryan Day gave an update on the talented offensive tackle Onianwa.

"Big E's already changed his body a little bit,” Day said. “The guys seemed to embrace (Onianwa and Phillip Daniels). He (Onianwa) can carry weight, so if we can cut him down we're going to see even more athleticism and bend."

Onianwa is a talented tackle who could have entered the draft process and he would have been selected next month. Now, he’s going to play for the Buckeyes in 2025. The Rice transfer is listed at 6-foot-6 and 357 pounds on the spring roster. Expect him to get to around 345 at least by the time the season rolls around.

Ohio State replaces both tackles from the National Championship team with Josh Simmons and Josh Fryar both off to the NFL. Onianwa and the Minnesota transfer Daniels are the favorites to be OSU’s starting tackles in 2025.

New offensive line coach Tyler Bowen has some proven talent to work with right away in Columbus. Ohio State’s offensive line should be a strong group once again next season.

Just sayin': The "BIG E" needs to be 12 pounds lighter......
