OT Dawand Jones (All B1G, All-American, Cleveland Browns)

NFL Draft Expert Labels Dawand Jones First-Round Talent

Former Ohio State right tackle Dawand Jones is starting to garner a lot

With 7-foot-5 reach & light feet like this, how are rushers supposed to get around Ohio State’s Dawand Jones," Nagy asked. "We’ve had numerous NFL scouts tell us he’s a better version of Chiefs 4x Pro Bowler Orlando Brown Jr. (and we agree). Sounds like 1st rounder."

Jones definitely brings the size that Brown did coming out of Oklahoma; at 6-foot-8, 359 pounds, the Buckeye set a Senior Bowl with his 89-inch wingspan. But with size comes questions about movement and speed.

2023 NFL Draft buyer beware prospects: Jalen Carter, Will McDonald IV among six who bring concerns

Teams will be doing their homework on these situations

Ohio State OT Dawand Jones

The Ohio State lineman measured 6-foot-8, 374 pounds at the NFL Combine. He is an outlier in essentially every way. Jones did very little at the NFL Combine and the Ohio State Pro Day. In fact, he declined to weigh in at his Pro Day, which was alarming, but not all that surprising, after having dinner with Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin the night before. Jones was a much improved player from 2021 to 2022 so that speaks to his discipline. However, teams will want to sit down with him to make sure that he is motivated to keep his weight in check.

I don't think Dawand got bad advice initially to go he apparently flubbed the predraft process post Senior bowl. Probably some of it on his own some of it on bad advice
Yeah Dawand sort of positioned himself outside of the 1st round with leaving the senior bowl after 1 day and then declining to workout/weigh in for teams. Just compounding bad decisions.

Wypler on the other hand just outright got bad advice.

Wish kids could pull their names from the draft and return to school lol

Browns fourth-round pick Dawand Jones told teams his dream was to be an NBA player, per report

By Jordan Dajani

The 2023 NFL Draft is in the books, and the Cleveland Browns put together a solid class despite not making a pick in the first two rounds. One interesting selection came in the fourth round, where the Browns took former Ohio State offensive tackle Dawand Jones with the No. 111 overall pick.
Jones is a monster, standing at 6-foot-8 and weighing 374 pounds. As NFL.com's Lance Zierlein so eloquently put it, Jones is a, "human mountain requiring long hikes to navigate." Jones fell a bit farther in the draft than many anticipated, and some thought he could be a first-round pick. As it turns out, he didn't exactly dominate the pre-draft process.
According to SI.com, Jones' pre-draft went "as sideways as possible." There are questions about his weight, and apparently about his handling of the Senior Bowl and pro day. In fact, Jones reportedly told teams his dream was to play in the NBA, not the NFL!

Jones took to Twitter to refute this report, tweeting, "False like where do y'all get this information from."
Jones was a two-time All-Big Ten player that allowed zero sacks and five pressures in 394 pass-block snaps last season. He started 12 games at right tackle in 2022, and was a Second Team AP All-American.

Teams appear to have had questions about his dedication to the game, but the Browns refused to take him off their draft board. Jones' reported pre-draft comments don't guarantee he won't pan out in the league. He possesses what he needs to be a very special player in the NFL, and Cleveland didn't have to use a premier pick to acquire him. Still, it takes incredible dedication to find success in the pros.
