When filling the airwaves with former college-football talent, few other cities in America can compete with Columbus, O-H I-O.

At least 21 former Ohio State football players and coaches -- some with decades-old ties to the university and others still sore from bowl games -- appear regularly on TV and radio sports programs, most of them local.

Pre-game, post-game, midgame and midweek, Buckeye commentators abound.

"I think it's completely unique here," said radio talk-show host Dave Maetzold, who served as sports director at WCMH-TV (Channel 4) from 1994 to 2004.

"And that's because the biggest thing going on in this market is the Ohio State football team."

Do most of our football players major in sports announcing? Today, I saw no less than Chris Spielman, Robert Smith, Eddie George, and of course, Herbie. That seems to give OSU an advantage over other schools in the numbers of college football announcers. This is a la Miami University (Ohio), which is called the 'Cradle of Coaches'.

It's humerous (at least to my twisted sense of humor) that the 'football factory' has turned out more eloquent, well-spoken, pithy, concise, erudite, and of course, extremely knowledgeable football spokespeople, who are doing color and commentary for college games. It also appears that Herbie is being groomed to take over Brent Mushmouth's duties when he retires.
Maybe all the film and chalk talks stuck with these guys. Anyone seen any other OSU alums behind the mike (national scene only)? I expect that there's some alums announcing the Ohio market, but don't get that in California. Also add Jimmy Jackson on Big Ten channel for basketball.

And, I also expect they have been told not to be 'homers' if they want to keep progressing. Stay neutral and call 'em like they see 'em.

Earl Bruce is on 610 locally. Earl is almost as fun to listen to as Spielman, they both let their passion for OSU explode over the airwaves.

I think Craig Krenzel is on either 610 or 1460 once in a while.
