OSU shows improvement under NCAA graduation formula
School still lags behind conference, national scores

The NCAA yesterday unveiled what it believes is a more accurate method than the federal government’s for computing how well schools do in graduating student-athletes.

For Ohio State, it showed an improvement in the graduation rates for football and men’s basketball, but OSU still rated in the bottom half of the Big Ten. For major colleges as a whole, however, "these early finds are really spectacular," NCAA president Myles Brand said.

The NCAA’s Graduation Success Rate shows that 76 percent of student-athletes who enrolled at a Division I school between 1995 and 1998 had graduated after six years. The Department of Education had calculated it at 62 percent.

"That is a dramatic difference and it is due to a much more accurate counting (by the NCAA)," Brand said.

The Department of Education looked only at who had enrolled at a school as a student-athlete and then had graduated from it after six years. The NCAA tracked not only those students, but ones who transferred and then graduated from another school, and junior-college players who transferred in and graduated.

"We must respect that migration of students in order to get accurate data," Brand said.

Even though such accounting helped Ohio State improve to 52 percent from 49 percent in football and to 45 percent from 25 percent in men’s basketball, the Buckeyes still were ninth out of 11 schools in the Big Ten.

They also are well off the beam compared with the national Graduation Success Rates — 64 percent in football and 58 percent in men’s basketball.

But the Graduation Success Rate is what the NCAA refers to as historical data. What will concern schools more is the second edition of the Academic Progress Rate, which tracks current players’ academic progress and eligibility.

That edition is due out in February. The teams that fall well below an APR score of .925 could face sanctions, from loss of scholarships to postseason bans.

Though Ohio State scored a .892 in football and .910 in basketball in the first edition, a spokesman for the athletics department yesterday said OSU anticipates every one of its teams to meet at least the .925 minimum in February.

Football, for example, had 55 players post a 3.00 grade-point average or better in fall quarter, the spokesman said, and the team’s overall GPA has risen to 2.81.

The reason the NCAA devised such categories as APR and GSR was "to provide greater transparency and accountability" of the main mission of member schools, said University of Hartford president Dr. Walter Harrison, chairman of the NCAA committee on academic reform. That mission is to see that studentathletes are provided a meaningful education in exchange for their athletic effort.

The idea is to expose the "worst of the worst" of those derelict in that mission over time and penalize them, Harrison said.

Anyone know what the Big 10 rankings as a whole are?

I'm guessing that Northwestern is probably first, and that Michigan State is probably last, but I'd like to see how the numbers fall...

For one, I'm glad to see progress at tOSU in academics. Any progress. There is nothing wrong with expecting athletes to complete school work effectively. But it is disturbing to note we are still roughly ninth among eleven in many of these elements.

Frankly, I do not understand why we are that relatively low. I do note a trend toward recruiting better students, particularly in the football program, perhaps by coach Matta as well. Like most fans I suspect, I am bemused by the difficulty in getting academically marginal athletes enrolled at tOSU, but I cannot argue that ninth place, plus or minus, does not justify higher enrollment standards. I hope they work, and that the overall programs do not suffer.

Go Bucks!

I am really surprised at those ratings also. I thought OhioState would be around 3rd or 4th. Northwestern has always ruled in the academics part
I figured Michigan would be 2nd. And Ohio State 4th. I'll bet JT is not happy with those figures.

I bet he is comforted by the trend. The numbers are tilted by the "sins of his forefathers." Remember he cannot undue past ills, he can only maintain current and future standards. It is from these that we see things moving in the correct direction.

It will be a few more years.....

before we see the impact Tressel has had on our graduation rates based off of this type of report. This data was for students who had enrolled between 1995 and 1998. The students who enrolled as late as 1998 were were in school three years prior to the hiring of Coach Tressel.

Can anyone shed some light on how the transfers/early NFLers, or the flunk-outs affect the graduation rates? Obviously the flunk-outs hurt, as an athlete will go to a DII school before they return to OSU (anyone remember someone flunking out and returning, except a Prop 48?)

I seem to remember that the transfers count against graduation rates, as do the early entries, unless they graduate within six years of entry. Under Cooper, the hype was come to OSU, and we'll get you ready for the Show in three years, and we had a ton of people that left early. So yeah, Tres is paying the piper for Cooper's stuff. He's now recruiting good students, what the 2002 class had a gpa of over 3.0! But from my own experience, HS academics doesn't translate to college classes (Miami University 1971), (MBA OSU 1976).

Just looking at the MBA rankings, OSU is around 7th out of 11. With all the colleges OSU has, as well as the automatic entry into the school, I'd think that the graduation rate for the entire school would be lower, ergo the athletes would show up 'better'.

Don't know, but am very glad to see that OSU is bringing up the academic part. PS, does anyone know how far back the relating goes? I remember the 'Killer" Macon, Greg Simpson class lost 100% of the recruits within a three yar period. That's gotta hurt. But my grey hair indicates that I don't remember the years it happened.:osu:

In the first post it says that the new system accounts for those who transfer to other schools and subsequently graduate within the 6-year window.

For anyone whining about us shying away from kids with questionable academics, just re-read the first post. Being near the bottom of the conference won't cut it. Granted, under Tressel we've had the most Academic All-Conference selections of any school, and the only way to maintain that and to offset the past performance under the previous regime is to keep to standards tougher. It's only in our best interest.

It's appalling that they make that claim when they're in the same conference and same geographical area as Northwestern.
