OSU RESEARCH RANKING RISES TO SEVENTH IN NATION

Ohio State now ranks seventh nationally among all public universities in research expenditures and second in industry-sponsored research, according to the National Science Foundation.

OSU's total research expenditures were $652 million for fiscal year 2006, a 7 percent increase when compared to fiscal year 2005.

"This money actually reflects some 5,000 research awards that our faculty won," said Robert McGrath, senior vice president for research at OSU.

"What is really impressive is that these are completely won awards. Except for the state component, the rest is federal dollars that would have gone to other institutions in other states if our faculty had not been so innovative and competitive."

The current rankings show Ohio State has passed Big Ten institutions such as Penn State (eighth place) and Minnesota (ninth place), as well as traditional research powerhouses such as the University of California, Davis (10th place) and the University of California, Berkeley (12th place).

Pretty impressive especially given the fact that the National Cancer Institute gave tOSU another $12M cancer research grant just last month.

The National Cancer Institute has awarded Ohio State University researchers a five-year, $10.9 million grant to further studies of retrovirus-associated cancer.

The grant follows a previous five-year, $8.9 million cancer institute grant received in 2003 for retrovirus cancer research.

Findings from the team's research "will help us further discover therapeutic targets against retroviral-induced lymphoma and its lethal side effects syndromes, such as hypercalcemia," Michael Lairmore, principal investigator and associate director at the Cancer Center, said in a release.
