Where's YOUR Gold Pants?

So, I flew home for some R&R at home and to cover the BUCKEYE's matches (will post some photos here on BP). I couldn't pass up the $322 RT airfare from the ATL (booked another flight for $338 for next month too; a crime NOT to).

Anyway, I slept most of the way from Minny to Hononlulu (8.5 hr flight) and as we're about 20 mins out of making our final approach the Cpt gets on the PA system to announce that they wanted to wish the Penn St. Men's VB team good luck while in Hawai'i. Some applause were heard and by now I was AWAKE! So, as the clapping died down and the plane was surrounded in silence, I BELTED out a GO BUCKEYES! People all over turned around and some laughs were heard. I had to do it! Couldn't let PSU get the last WORD in on MY TURF! NO F'ing way man!

GO BUCKS!

OSU swept UCLA 3-0 yesterday for their first win ever against them (were 0-13 all-time going into the match). The Bucks play Hawaii tonight at 7:00 pm HST (midnight Ohio time). I'll be there. They then play Penn State tomorrow afternoon at 4:00.

We got our asses beat big time tonight, 30-19, 30-21, 30-22 (or scores very close to that). We had something like 18 service faults, and Hawaii seemed to know where our spike would be coming from (we got "roofed" at least 20 times). The talent edge was clearly on Hawaii's side, but there was no reason why we shouldn't have made it closer.

But, what was cool was that the 12 or so OSU Alumni Club Hawaii folks who were there "represented" big time. In fact, UH had three Hawaiian drums there, and they would beat a 3-beat pattern which was exactly like the rhythm in our "Let's go Bucks!" cheer. At first, all the Hawaiian fans were sedate, and so we literally took over the chant by screaming "Let's go Bucks!" in unison with the drums. After about three of those cheers, the Hawaiian fans decided that we shouldn't be making the Stan Sheriff Center our own house, so they all started to cheer "Let's go Bows!" while we chanted "Let's go Bucks!". In retrospect, it was pretty sad that a dozen Ohio State fans were the ones that ended up igniting any fan support for the Hawaii team.

By the way, never give HAYN a lift home...the fucker farts big time in the car. :slappy:

OSU VOLLEYBALL

Additional season a plus for Katz, Buckeyes

Stuart Katz could have left Ohio State last year with a marketing degree and memories of four nice years in the men’s volleyball program.
But he felt the gnawing experienced by so many athletes: "I could do better if given one more try."
The opening was there since Katz, a three-time Big Ten All-Academic selection, redshirted as a freshman because of injury.
"When I came to school I thought I would stay four years," he said. "Once I had a chance (for a fifth year), I had to take it. I jumped at the chance. When you’re given an opportunity, you obviously want to do something with it."
The wait has been worth it for the No. 8 Buckeyes (7-1), who play host to 15 th-ranked George Mason (7-0) tonight in St. John Arena. OSU opens Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association play Friday at Mercyhurst (1-3).
"All of a sudden the stars lined up. He’s been an inspiration to others," OSU coach Pete Hanson said.
Katz was named to the Outrigger Invitational alltournament team in Honolulu on Jan. 18-20. The Buckeyes defeated two of the three ranked teams they played, including UCLA for the first time in 15 matches. Katz, an outside hitter, averaged 4.64 kills, 1.27 digs and .73 blocks.
With preseason all-conference pick Layne Dreven not expected to play until next week because of a shoulder injury, the team has looked to Katz and co-captains Mark Greaves and Andy Cole for leadership.
"My role hasn’t changed that much other than being a young team, I try to use my experience a little more," Katz said.
Injuries and a deep roster had prevented Katz from making the most of his time in previous seasons.
"He has been a poster boy for bad luck," Hanson said.
His freshman year Katz had a lower-backstress fracture that forced him to miss the season. As a sophomore he was moved to libero, a defensive specialist limited to the back row.
As a junior he suffered a brokn left wrist early in the first game of the season and missed 15 matches. He had a shoulder injury that limited his mobility last season, though he managed to play in 28 matches.
"The running joke is wondering when I’ll get hurt this year," Katz said.
Hanson has noticed a difference in Katz, who has started every game.
"He’s mentally strong. He looks really comfortable. He looks really confident," he said. "You could see it before, but he never sustained it."
Katz had enough credits to graduate but added a second major (transportation and logistics) to remain eligible and will graduate in the spring. The Port Washington, N.Y., native will then move to Baltimore, where he has a job waiting as a production supervisor with home builder NVHomes. He interned with the company last summer.

The same UCLA and PSU teams we beat in the Outrigger Invitational are meeting this evening for the NCAA championship. Althought we didn't get as far as we wanted this year, we can still say we beat the top two teams in the country.

I'm a student teacher. My coop teacher has a son who is a junior in high school, and he has an offer from OSU in volleyball. He is holding out for basketball offers to start coming in though.

What sickens me the most is that he has only 3 offers cuirrently; and he views NIU (Northern Illinois) as the leader... but only if he doesn't get any b-ball offers. Made me sick to know that he views his NIU offer as the best of the three.

Made me sick to know that he views his NIU offer as the best of the three.

Well, he's obviously a smart kid, seeing as NIU is higher ranked. Oh wait...
