OSU Men's Basketball Recruiting/Projections/General Discussions

Okpara was far worse, as Felix released a social media post claiming he was coming back, and changed his mind late. Sean Stewart didn't lie to us, he didn't tell us he was coming back, he just waited until the last minute. I think maybe NIL is incentivizing these guys to hang in until they can get the last dollar they are entitled to and then leave. Let's be honest, OSU wasn't going to break the bank for a top-tier big man transfer regardless of when Stewart entered the portal.
Stewart reportedly had reached an NIL agreement for next year, so yeah, he did change his mind.

I think Noel is a better PF anyway. Yeah, not as good a defender, but much better at everything on the offensive end. You have Bynum and Royal to back up at the 4 so no big deal there, but you did lose what was probably going to be the primary backup at the 5. Ivans development is more important now. I think we have guys that may be a bit undersized in Noel and Bynum that could be used as tertiary options. Obviously we are going to need another player, whether its a wing that can move Royal to playing more at the 4, or a guy that can play either front court spot.

I see NIL as a year-to-year thing, and didn't see a post on Stewart from social media like everyone else got who started, so I had a suspicion he wasn't going to be back. I'm from Missouri on Ivan. They really need big man help badly right now. Get someone who can really hold it down defensively in the paint & clean the glass, that's a glaring weakness with this roster right now. I would like to think at some point these coaches will realize you can't rely on 6'9" 225# players in the post in the B1G.

Jardy reported that he had signed an NIL deal weeks ago.

Houston just played in the NC game (and should have won) without anyone in the rotation over 6'8".

Ohio State Buckeyes have their eyes on a top transfer portal player, but it all comes down to his NBA decision

The transfer portal is closed around college basketball for players to enter. Ohio State lost five players with no real surprises coming about.

C Austin Parks, C Aaron Bradshaw, F Evan Mahaffey, F Sean Stewart, and G Meechie Johnson Jr. all decided to find new schools. On the flip side, the Buckeyes have brought in G Gabe Cupps, C Christoph Tilly, and F Brandon Noel as transfer additions.

The Buckeyes are not yet done though, as they still have a couple of spots to fill. Ohio State is interested in one of the top players in the portal but is awaiting his NBA draft decision.

Ohio State among schools interested in Texas Tech F Darrion Williams

According to Jeff Goodman, Ohio State is one of three programs showing interest in Texas Tech transfer F Darrion Williams. Williams hopes to be drafted but could pull his name out of the NBA draft process.

"The hope from Darrion Williams' camp is that he's gonna get drafted and that he's not coming back to college. If he were to withdraw, Kansas, Ohio State, and NC State would be involved"

Williams is a 6-foot-6, 210-pound forward from Las Vegas, Nevada, and started his college career at Nevada where he played one season. As a freshman, Williams averaged 7.6 points and 7.3 rebounds per game in 30 stats.

After transferring to Texas Tech, Williams made 33 starts as a sophomore and averaged 11.4 pounds and 7.5 rebounds per game. This past season with the Red Raiders, he put up 15.1 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 3.6 assists per game. Williams is capable of scoring from all three levels.

You conveniently ignored the part that they had guys who were heavier than the 225# I cited, and clearly I emphasize all the time weight is important. They did not look undersized weight-wise, and obviously they had very good length & athleticism to compensate for being slightly undersized height-wise. As far as NIL, like I said before, there was no social media post, so that was a tell.

Starters, Roberts - 220, Tugler - 230. Only big off the bench, Francis - 225.

Bamba Miller would be a really good pickup in the front court. More PF than C, but is 6'11, 215. Shoots the 3 well for his size, solid assist ratio, blocks shots. Would require as much cash as Williams, but probably more than we were giving Stewart.

OSU is recruiting Josh Ojianwuna, listed at 6'10" 230#, for the frontcourt. Presumably he would fill the role that Sean Stewart vacated. He actually had better stats than Stewart last season (although they were basically even if you consider he played about 4-5 minutes more on average because he obviously didn't pick up fouls as quickly).

OhioStateHoopsInsider posted on X that OSU expects to get a commitment tomorrow. I'm just guessing it will be someone to help out the frontcourt, as I expect they are waiting on Darrion Williams to decide before they add at the wing.

Buckeyes playing waiting game for elite transfer portal target Darrion Williams

Ohio State is playing the long game in hopes of landing an elite Texas Tech transfer.

While Ohio State may have just whiffed on each of those recruits, it’s starting to look more likely that Diebler and his staff are actually waiting out another player – former Texas Tech forward Darrion Williams.

At 6-foot-6 and 225 pounds, Williams was listed as a forward on Texas Tech’s official roster but has racked up nearly 300 assists in his collegiate career and was second on TTU last season with 3.6 assists per game. He’s also a 37.9% three-point shooter and averaged 15.1 points per game as a junior. He is allegedly considering Ohio State, Kansas, and North Carolina State for next season, as well as possible other suitors that have yet to be publicly linked.

Williams entered the NBA Draft on April 6, and put his name into the NCAA Transfer portal the same day. On Friday afternoon, Williams, along with 74 other players, was invited to participate in the NBA Draft Combine from May 11-18 in Chicago.

A combine invite is promising for a player’s draft stock, and will give the two-time All-Big 12 honoree ample opportunity to improve his draft stock. At the moment, Williams is looking like a mid-to-late second round pick – Tankathon has him going 47th overall, The Athletic has him at 39, and Yahoo Sports has him pegged as the 41st overall pick.

If Williams doesn’t get a first-round guarantee from a team at the NBA Combine next week, there’s a good chance he decides to play one more year of college. He would almost be guaranteed to earn more in NIL compensation at the college level (anywhere from $2-$4 Million) than he would as a middle of the second round selection.
