OSU Men's Basketball Recruiting/Projections/General Discussions

The person continuing to make bad impressions is Gene Smith. It's not Holt's fault that Gene bumbled another crucial situation.

Exactly. Holt's in a hole a mile deep that Thad and Gene dug. Now, Holt accepted the HC position, so it's his job to get the program out of that hole. But the notion that Holt's somehow "missing the target" based on what has transpired in the past four weeks is beyond naive.

Missing on Goodwin and Bazley so quickly after taking the job shows me that Coach Holt is not making great first impressions. Color me a little concerned.
Tells me that any people that remained Matta supporters, in regards to leading the men's basketball team, needed to realize just how bad the program was/is.

Not you specifically but just a reality check to all that this isn't a destination spot at all. We just lost to Rutgers our last game. With player exodus at a rampant rate.

I get it's Holtmann's job to clean it up and college basketball can lead to quick turnarounds but man, a month on the job? And Matta's first class was 2 guys that contributed nothing. I trust Holtmann's coaching to get the Buckeyes back on kids' minds and the recruiting will follow.

Edit- looks like others covered this above

Yes, a month on the job. Like JWin said, it's really Gene's fault. The things that are happening right NOW in recruiting are happening right now, regardless of the fact that Holtmann's only had a month. Blame Gene, blame Holtmann for taking the job, blame Goodwin for being a prima donna, whatever. We are in the hole big-time, we have no recruits lined up for 2018 as the options are shrinking, and the coach doesn't even want to use all of his schollies because of his philosophy. This might not be Holtmann's fault, but it's not going that well so far, sorry. What was the point in even firing Thad right then if we are looking at a three, four-year thing? Why not just announce this is the last year of his contract and build up a pool of candidates who actually want the job to look at the scene and consider it? The only advantage to how things went down is if Holtmann can grab the reins really quickly and right the ship...everyone seems to concede that he can't.

I'm of two minds about that. On one hand it was awkwardly handled and the timing was atrocious for a number of different reasons. But on the other, given the circumstances I believe the hire itself was one of the absolute best possible hires Gene could have made at that point and he did it in about a week, which gave the new staff enough time to get a handful of their targets in on unofficials before the July dead period. And after everything that Thad had done for this program, I can't exactly fault Gene a whole lot for giving Thad a chance to see if he could make something happen with the recruiting. So I give Gene a B minus.

Missing on a late hail mary is concerning because they may struggle to fill out the roster in the short term.

That said, it does not change the gigantic hole that Holtmann is recruiting from. Recruiting is about relationships and Chris has very little at his current spot. Bazley chose a much better program (and frankly wasn't coming back) and everyone else was right at the end of their process with other schools when he was inserted into the mix (and no, recruiting them at Butler is not a very good stepping stone).

Bingo on the bolded, GS screwed the program with the way he handled this. It is disappointing to miss on these guys but the guy CH actually had a real relationship, he brought in (Young) and he should be a huge addition that plays right away. I can't blame CH for not landing any of these guys but do admit maybe I was overly optimistic on the immediate recruiting impact he might have on some of the guys we missed on (Goodwin and Nance mostly, Carmody to some extent).

There are still targets out there for the '18 class and there is still time, but there is a lot of work to do to be sure. Here is to hoping we land Hunter somehow.

Yes, he may even try to add 1 more for 2017, I think he wants to. So he potentially could have a 4-man 2017. At which point 3 or 4 for 2018 sounds reasonable. If he doesn't add another guard for 2017, I think they will get a transfer or grad transfer guard at some point in the next year, to give them some experience.

in light of jallow's reclassification to 2017, holtmann's earlier projection of the 2018 class possibly being 3-deep (maybe 4) makes complete sense now. to be sure, a 3-player class for 2018 sounded... odd. but it wouldn't to someone like holt. i mean, the guy has just a slightly better understanding of the recruiting situation than the rest of us, no?

Shrewd move with Jallow, for sure. The commitment wasn't surprising, but the bomb of the reclassification feels like a game-changer for the big picture.

"(Holtmann) told me that they're low on guys," Jallow said. "I think there are 10 guys on the roster, and that's pretty low for a college team. He said we need guys to come in and contribute to the team, we're looking to make a big turnaround this year. That right there was good enough for me."

"I can play above the rim, and use my athleticism on the court to guard multiple positions," Jallow said. "I can bring my guard skills, my team mentality. I'm not a selfish player. I like to put my teammates in a good position to score. I'm ready to work."
