OSU Alumni Magazine snafu!!

Are you referring to the one from Linda Dorff that complained about football getting too much attention at Ohio State and the arts, especially theatre, being ignored?

Or the one from C. Bradford Bevers who said he was ashamed of Ohio State because a student athlete talked smack to the Iowa football players as they went to the lockeroom at half time?

Or could it be the numerous letters about poor sportsmanship at the games? (Though a few of them were reasonable.)

It's hard to believe some of these people are Ohio State "fans".

Yeah, hard to believe there are people who have proper perspective. :roll1:
Maybe if people cared as much about OSU's academic reputation as they did their football record, OSU would be a much better school than the mediocre Big 10 academic school that it is.

Those were both good ones but I think the two that made me laugh the hardest were

Paul Szymanowski who said we should conduct random breathalyzer tests and anyone over the legal limit would not be allowed in.

or

Dennis Vidmar is complained that OSU is reaping the fruits of three generations of undue emphasis on athletics, and we should eliminate the position of athletics director because the post weilds far to much power and influence and has to much autonomy in a acedemic institution.

Too bad it's 100% correct.

I wouldn't say it is 100% correct. Are their problems with some people at football games? Yup, just like their are problems at every football game and every sport. But to read to tone of the letters you would get the vibe that it is only a problem at OSU and it is everyone that is the problem, when in reality it is the minority that is the problem but get the most press.

Do I think there needs to be a crackdown on those that are the problem? Yes. Do I think that they need to shut down all the bars along lane avenue during the games? No.

I just don't see why opinions like that are that surprising. We have the largest alumni group in the country. If all of us cared about football, how much do you think the department would charge for tickets? :tongue2:

I agreed and it doesn't surprise me, I know that thier are opinions like that, and their are plenty of people that don't give a rats ass about football. What is annoying is only that it was in our Alumni Mag. and two knowing probally most of the people have never been to a football game before to know what it is really like, they just have a picture in their head of these "low brow" people who would rather watch a sporting event than spend Saturday afternoon watching Swan lake.

Did you go to OSU for undergrad? Does that make you a mediocrity? In engineering, hard sciences, and agricultural/animal sciences OSU is among the best in the nation. OSU's military history pogram is recognized as the best in the nation. OSU cannot cherry pick scholars for it's humanities departments like the Ivies do, but I don't reallygive a rat's behind about OSU's theater department or school of social work, or other assorted left wing circle jerks. Do you think you would be a better doctorB if you went to Harvard Med, or Stanford for unddergrad instead of OSU?

Gotta love our own Alumni Mag pushing the sterotype that all OSU football fans are a problem at games.

Too bad it's 100% correct.

So Tibs, it's "100% correct" that "all OSU football fans are a problem at games".

Despite the obvious fact that some fans cause problems, your statement is completely ridiculous and inflammatory.

From myself, and the thousands of loyal tOSU fans that enjoy the football games and the atmosphere surrounding them, without being a "problem", please refrain from blanket criticism of an entire group. Unless your intent is simply to portray yourself as unreasonable and ridiculous. Because you've accomplished that.

Professional academic people are their own little clique, and don't really care about the role of sports in the university, or appreciate what they mean to most undergrads or alumni, they write from an academic perspective/bias.

Don't lump all of us professional academics into one category. I don't know if I find anything more entertaining than college football....except maybe the next four days coming up in college basketball. Sure, I'm in the minority among most academics, but there is a small group of us that are as die-hard as any other fans.

This reminds me of a discussion between two history professors at Ohio State that I once observed. The one was complaining about the $150 million renovation to the stadium while the library sat unattended to as it functionally fell apart due to the lack of funding and the need for a new building (a sad, but true statement--even though it ignores the fact that the stadium took zero dollars away from the library). The other professor responded, well perhaps when the library has 100,000 users show up every weekend it would see the same type of funding. I thought his comment was pretty funny.

...However, believe it or not, there are OSU alumni out there who hate football, and didn't care about it when they wereon campus-I work w/ a girl who is one of these people...
one of my best friends is one of those people. he was a music major (plays the Bass) and absolutely could not STAND the football team, or anthing related, due to the fact that the OSUMB used to drive him up the wall... now that we're 2,000 miles away, he's changed a little, and kind of roots for the Buckeyes, but back when we were in school, he openly rooted AGAINST Ohio State...

Yeah, hard to believe there are people who have proper perspective. :roll1:

To which letter are you responding?

The one about football receiving too much attention and the arts not enough? That is pure opinion. Sure, different perspective, but not necessarily the "proper" one.

Or maybe it was the letter that said Ohio State, yes...the entire university, is shameful because of the juvenile actions of one individual. Once again, a perspective, but not necessarilty the "proper" one.

Or maybe it was the comments made about the lack of sportsmanship by Ohio State fans. I guess when one such as yourself makes blanket statements about all the fans, then such perspective might be "proper".

Maybe if people cared as much about OSU's academic reputation as they did their football record, OSU would be a much better school than the mediocre Big 10 academic school that it is.

Yeah, those horrible Big 10 schools, they have terrible academics. Easily argued the strongest conference after the Ivy League in terms of academics, but in your book this only leaves them as mediocre. Talk about what is "proper" and not "proper" perspective....:roll1:

UPDATE**

Just received my July-August edition of the magazine and found another error.

On page 36 they have a pic of Ronnie Bourquin who was chosen as Big 10 Baseball player of the year.

It says that he was drafted "in the 2nd round of the Major Leageue amateur draft by the Detroit LIONS!" :roll1:

Eh, until this past baseball season, most people in Detoit could care less about telling the two teams apart, so it's understandable.
