Game Thread Oregon State @ Ohio State - 09/01/18, 12:00PM (ABC)

A couple if quick take aways.
Weber is a different player now. Very impressive and much more mature. I kept saying just keep him in and feed him!
Haskins is who we thought he was. Very, very talented and will probably be gone after this season.
The defense scares me right now without Fuller.. Have heard he'll be back next week. We need him out there directing traffic.
Need Borland back in the middle as soon as he's ready. Browning looked lost too many times. Was hoping for more from him but he's young.
Played a ton of guys on defense and that contributed to the raggededness at points. That and the huge delay. Thought the remainder of the game would not get played. I can't imaginge staying around through that weather! Crazy!

A few quick thoughts:

The Good

1. The offense. Scored 77 points and amassed 721 total yards. Last time the Buckeyes scored 77+ points against a P5 opponent was 1950 (83 vs Iowa)
2. Dwayne Haskins. Completed 22 for 30 for 313 yards, 5 TDs, and an INT that wasn't really his fault. Hyper accurate, quick decisions, no happy feet
3. Mike Weber. Ran for career best 186 yards on just 20 carries. Displayed speed, power, and even a bit of vision
4. Terry McLaurin. Had 4 catches for 121 yards, including a career-long 75-yard TD. Better speed and hands than I remember
5. K.J. Hill. Smooth operator working underneath routes. 6 catches, 82 yards. Will make run at OSU single season reception record (Boston, 85 in 1998)
6. Nick Bosa. Pretty much unstoppable. 4 tackles, 2 sacks, 2 fumble recoveries, 1 touchdown. Will win all the awards that Joey should've won
7. Dre'Mont Jones. Had more sacks yesterday (2) than he had all of last season (1). Will be the X Factor on this defense
8. Drue Chrisman. I'm not sure what I like better - the one punt, or the 65 yard average. No worries either way
9. The coaching. No delay penalties, no wasted time outs, no QB draws from empty sets, no WR screens, everyone looked organized. Urban who?

The Meh

1. J.K. Dobbins. Last year, averaged 100 yds/game and 7.2 yds/carry. Yesterday had only 74 yards and 4.9 yds/carry against a really bad defense
2. Parris Campbell. Five years in Columbus and the light still hasn't gone on. Great athlete, mediocre receiver. At best, the fourth option in pass game
3. Bin Victor. Another kid who just doesn't seem to "get" the receiver position. Will he emerge in 2018 or get buried on the depth chart?
4. Tate Martell. Did nothing impressive. Looks more like a future wide receiver or transfer rather than a "secret weapon" on offense
5. Chase Young. Over aggressive, out of position, off sides, flashed occasionally. Obviously huge upside, but didn't really show it yesterday
6. Kendall Sheffield. Generally invisible (which is a good thing for a CB), but did let an arm punt go through his hands for a long completion
7. Jonathon Cooper. I saw him on the field, but don't see him anywhere on the stat sheet. Trending to become a 5-star bust
8. Sean Nuernberger. Went 11/11 on extra points, but I'm still waiting for him to make an important field goal
9. The freshman. Outside of a late garbage-time 33-yard TD run by Master Teague, no one really flashed

The Bad

1. The defense. Allowed 31 points and 392 yards, including TDs of 49, 78, and 80 yards. Outside of Bosa and Jones, no one really played well
2. The safeties. Big plays usually mean bad safeties. Oregon State repeatedly gashed the Buckeye defense on the ground and through the air
3. Antwuan Jackson. On his first play as a Buckeye, he had a huge missed tackle that resulted in an 80-yard touchdown run. Not good
4. The punt return team. Yet another miscue with this unit, this time a muffed punt. Remember when we used to score TDs on punt returns?

Said this before, but I think it's overstated how much Haskins is going to going to be an improvement on JT in the deep passing game. I think you are going to see a bigger difference in the short/intermediate passing game. Haskins was decisive and accurate in that area yesterday, more than JT was

From the jump of this game I texted a few people that I hadn't seen OSU's offense look so nearly perfect since the 1995 game against Iowa.

Then the defensive gaffs started and the 1995 analogy really started to bother me.

The 1995 team had the nightmare of Biatchibatuka because they showed flashes of a softness against the run all year, no one else could make them pay for it enough to beat them.

A major difference between now and then is the 1995 team had some great names on the DL but they could be pushed around, especially inside. The 2018 DL, not so much.

I don't necessarily disagree with @LordJeffBuck 's listing of Martell as a "meh" for yesterday's game... however, things like this:

are certain to make his teammates and coaches happy.

It's not an extraordinary downfield block by any stretch... but... he was there to make it, and that says something.

OHIO STATE'S 77-31 SEASON-OPENING WIN OVER OREGON STATE IN GIFS

95992_h.jpg

The Dwayne Haskins era is off to a roaring start as he became the first Ohio State quarterback to throw for 300 yards in a debut as a starter Saturday. Oh, his five touchdown tosses were also the most by a first-time starting quarterback at Ohio State.

The end result? A 77-31 liquifying of Oregon State in the season opener at Ohio Stadium. The Buckeyes rolled up 721 yards of total offense, good enough for the second-most yards for a single-game in school history behind the 776 yards Urban Meyer's team put up against Bowling Green in 2016.

Typically, our GIF recaps show a broad array of highlights from the game, from crowd shots, to funny moments, to sacks and other highlights on the defensive side of the ball. However, when a team drops 11 touchdowns, there's not much room for anything else, so enjoy these dozen GIFs that tell the story of Ohio State's throttling of Oregon State.

To view the GIFs, hover on desktop or touch on your mobile device.

Interim head coach Ryan Day, filling in for the suspended Urban Meyer, was feeling it before the game. Maybe he had a feeling his offense would find the end zone 10 times?

Touchdown No. 2: Mike Weber shows NFL skills with this 17-yard run to make it 14-7, Buckeyes. Weber would end the day with 188 yards rushing and four touchdowns.

OREGON STATE DEBRIEFING: HASKINS THROWS FOR FIVE SCORES, WEBER DOMINATES, & A SHAKY SECONDARY

95978_h.jpg

It's a good day when your quarterback who is making his first career start throws for five touchdowns.

To be frank, the Buckeyes dominated for the large part. When you score 77 points in a football game, you're generally going to come out on top, and the Buckeyes did just that.

It wasn't a big time opponent, but it was an Ohio State win, the Buckeyes are 1-0, and we'll take it.

Let's debrief.

THE SHORT STORY
This went about as expected. Ohio State dispatched Oregon State fairly quickly. The Buckeyes went up 42-14 through two quarters and then largely coasted in the second half. The Beavers outscored Ohio State 17-14 in the third, but it hardly mattered, as Ohio State put up 21 unanswered in the final frame to win 77-31.

QUICK BREAKDOWNS
Offense

Ohio State opened up the air attack on Saturday, throwing the ball to – well, everybody. 10 different players caught a pass, racking up a combined 346 yards.

The Buckeyes did a great job of getting the ball to their most explosive athletes in space and letting them make plays after the catch. The rushing attack was also quite potent: Mike Weber had a career-high 190 yards on 20 carries with three scores, and J.K. Dobbins rushed 15 times for 74 yards.

Freshmen Master Teague and Brian Snead also made their Ohio State debuts, and each found the end zone to kick off their careers.

Defense

Ohio State's defensive line ate the Oregon State offensive line. The Buckeyes had an five sacks and two fumble recoveries by Nick Bosa (who is good), including one for a touchdown – but we already knew that unit was good.

The weak spot for the Buckeye defense was the secondary. Oregon State only threw for 196 yards (and two touchdowns), but that was only because Oregon State had two big runs that went for scores and eliminated the potential for more passing yardage.

Also, the young guys showed they were young and it was pretty evident on back-to-back plays when Chase Young jumped offsides, then Jeff Okudah interfered with the receiver. Again, this was on back-to-back plays. As Yogi Berra once said, "it's deja vu all over again."

WHO EARNED A BUCKEYE LEAF?
Offense: Dwayne Haskins

It was a pretty sexy starting debut for the sophomore. Haskins threw for five touchdowns and 313 yards, leading the Buckeyes to scoring drive after scoring drive. Haskins looked calm, cool, and collected for Ohio State and had an all-time quote after the game:

As expected, Haskins' arm was on display and helped Ohio State roll to a victory.

Defense: Nick Bosa

Bosa is good, and today was no different. A constant force in the Oregon State backfield, Bosa racked up two sacks, as well as a few other hurries and pressures, and had two fumble recoveries, including one for a touchdown.

This man was nasty all afternoon and will be a problem once again for opposing offensive lines this fall.

PLAYS OF THE GAME
Offense:

Terry McLaurin got the season started with a bang. After scoring a touchdown on the Buckeyes' first drive of the game, he took the first play from scrimmage in the second half 75 yards to paydirt.
.
.
.
continued
.
.
.
BIGGEST QUESTION GOING FORWARD
Ohio State's defense clearly needs some work. While the Buckeyes did win by 46 points, they gave up 31 to a team led by their backup quarterback. Isaiah Pryor looked lost at times, the defensive line failed to hold their ground which led to a few rushing touchdowns, and the linebackers, although they didn't look dreadful, weren't exactly "up-to-par." It will be interesting to see how the Buckeye defense performs going forward, especially if they get Jordan Fuller back healthy soon.

Real good summary of the game.

I really am not a fan of the unblocked edge read option play (after the past two seasons with Barrett especially). That was a probable bad read by Martell and a two yard gain without the broken tackle.

The one positive, and it’s a potential big one, is that it makes defenses prepare for defending that option on the edge, which takes up a lot of time during the week.

Don’t prepare for it and it works a lot better, spend too much time preparing for it (or no matter what you do) and get carved up by Haskins downfield.

He also had a couple "razzle dazzle" plays (i.e. lateral at :55 and pass at 1:31) in video (below) that I was impressed with. See all his plays in the video:
