He will shatter all the state rushing records by the time he graduates. Stewart was named to the Tacoma News Tribune 2003 All-state football team and was the 2003 Seattle Times State 3A Player of the Year, as well as a first-team all-state selection. He rushed for 2,609 yards and 36 touchdowns as a junior. He was the 2003 Tacoma News Tribune 'Nugget in Waiting'. Stewart bench presses 350 pounds, squats 575 and has a vertical jump of 37-inches.


Stewart:
"I have good lower body strength and balance. That's a key to my running. I'm a good power back. I still want to get faster and work on my agility. I'd like to avoid tackles easier and make more moves."

Scouting Report:
The first thing that jumps out at you with Stewart is his size. Stewart shouldn’t be described as a blazer but he has good speed and quickness for his size. The second impressive attribute with regards to Stewart, and perhaps his best attribute, is his balance. For a 218-pounder he has amazing balance, footwork and agility. He finds a way to stay on his feet after the initial contact by the defense. Balance is an important attribute when evaluating running backs. Stewart runs with good power and can be a very punishing runner at times.

I hope we offer this kid soon so maybe we can get a real shot at him. Could you imagine getting Wells (speed back) and Jonathan Stewart (power) to go along with the o-line we have gotten in the last two years. I think we would be set at running back if we got these two to go along with Pittman, Haw, and maybe Chris Wells next year.<O:p</O:p

He sounds very intreging, but he doesn't have any great offers, only a few good ones. But the #1 RB per insiders should be pretty good, maybe the coaches should look at some tape.

I still think we told wells that he would be the only RB this year if he commits.

Well it seems like he definitely doesn't have any hesitations about leaving the west coast. Most of his offers are from Pac-10 teams, but he names 5 teams in the Midwest and south that he wants to hear from. OSU should have as good a shot as any. Let's hope the coaches know of his interest.

Just read a thread on B-Nuts regarding Stewart, and apparently Jamie Newberg along with Duane Long absolutely love this kid...

The feeling amongst the experts regarding lack of eilte school offers is likely due in some part to geographic location (Olympia, WA - hence mainly P10 Schools to this point), but more likely due to lack of test scores. Not necessarily bad grades, but rather no ACT/SAT scores yet to report.

Also, I watched the clips provided in the free report I posted above...

Stewart appears to have better than average speed along with a culmanation of balance and power. At some points he is like a pinball bouncing off of would be tacklers. Stewart has the abilty to out run you to the corners, run in between the tackles, leap over you, lower the shoulder, or smack you right in the face with a nasty stiff arm (one in particular literally snapped the head straight back on one poor kid).

I noticed an uncanny ability to shift the ball from one hand to another in order to protect it from the nearest defender (sometimes multiple times during some of the longer runs). Stewart showed nice vision with no juke moves, he heads straight up field looking for openings and lanes to move through while sometimes shifting into another gear.

Stewart also looked very good in a handful of clips of him returing kicks.

Granted, I'm certainly no expert and w/o knowing how good the competition Stewart faces really is... I must say, JS Impresses!

True, but we don't seem to be pursuing them very hard. Maybe I am wrong or the coaches are just hedging their bets, but they really seem to be targeting M. Wells. I like a big back as much as anyone, so it will be interesting to see if we go after this kid. If his only problem is no test scores I would be surprised, we offer a lot of kids before they take the ACT/SAT.

It should be interesting to see if anything comes of this.<!-- / message -->

Actually, this profile is less glowing than others I have read. This kid, according to the Sporting News benches almost 400lbs and runs under a 4.5. I also like this kids size-a little short-but well over 200lbs-plenty of stregth and power there. Wells, or not, it wouldn't hurt to toss this kid a scholly offer,IMO.

This kid is a freakin' stud. He has the most amazing balance I've ever seen from a RB at any level. Stewart has to be wrapped up to bring him down. I couldn't tell you how many guys in his film tried to take out his legs and failed or just got flat out ran over. I'd like to know how Stewart compares to Clarett at the same stage. He also showed a MoC like stiff arm on a couple plays. If we could get Stewart, I'd be saying, "Maurice Wells who?"

I understand your point that Stewart is amazing, but Wells is unbelievable. People knock his size but if you look at his stats MoW has serious power. He's not just some scatback who's going to get his bell rung everytime someone hits him hard. IMHO if we sign Wells, I'll be saying "Stewart who?" :wink:

Point taken, but Stewart's style reminds me tremdously of Clarett. He can get into the defensive backfield and create separation from the DB's and run over LB's. That's the best of both worlds. If we're going to pound the ball up the gut as much as we do I think he'll be a much more effective back. I was much more impressed with his video than Wells. Not that I would complain if we're able to land Wells. They're both VERY good looking RB's. Just imagine them taking their turn tearing up the weasel defense running behind Taz. :wink2:

I agree...Wells video was great, but it seems like it was a lot of cutting back, with huge amounts of space to run through. Surely not a knock on Wells, but not necessarily the type of running you would expect to see in the Big 10 every Saturday. Stewart definitely looked like more of a Clarett-styled runner.

The ideal is for OSU to have a TB who not only can handle the punishment of B10 football, but who delivers physical punishment to the defense every time he carries the ball. That means an oversized back with a physical style, a la Byers, Curtis Enis, and yes, MoC. You remember the state of the WSU defense at the end of that game? They weren't tired from chasing Clarett, they were beat up from getting smacked in the face every time they tried to tackle him, and they didn't want any more. Unfortunately, Michigan just landed a kid like that. Now we need one.
