Jonathan Stewart, Timberline's sensational senior running back, has been nominated to play in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl football game that will be played Jan. 15, 2005, in San Antonio, Tex.
Three soldiers presented Stewart the nomination at Timberline's practice Thursday.
"It's a blessing," Stewart said at practice. "It's an honor to be recognized like this."
Stewart will be notified at the end of the season if he has been selected to play in the all-star game. The game, featuring 78 of the nation's top players, will be televised by NBC.
"It's a huge honor," Timberline coach Kevin Young said. "And it's a deserving honor."
Stewart, who needs 437 yards to break the state's career high school rushing record, is considered to be the top high school running back in the country by numerous publications and recruiting experts.
"I've watched the game on TV the past couple of years and thought this might happen," Young said about Stewart's selection. "It's exciting to see him get that kind of national recognition."
Stewart has not decided where he will play college football next year. That selection just got harder. The University of Florida offered him a scholarship Wednesday, joining a growing list of offers.
"He's wide open," Young said about Stewart's choice of school. "He's just taking a look at who's going to offer him a scholarship."
Tennessee offered him a scholarship earlier in the week.
Stewart had said his top five choices were Oregon, Washington State, California, Ohio State and Michigan.
Young said he gets two or three calls a day from coaches enquiring about Stewart.
"Coaches can call him at home now too, so he's getting all kinds of calls," Young said. "I hope he narrows down his choices pretty soon."
Stewart will take an official visit to Washington State on Sept. 18 when the Cougars host Idaho.
