One more shot at explaining bashing vs. objective criticism.

There are MAJOR misunderstandings about what gets people temp-banned, and I don't really understand why. Frankly, I'm more frustrated by that confusion than I am the comments of those few who do buy time-outs.

Do you need to call Boeckman a name? Do you need to speak in absolutes about his future prospects? Do you need to make quips about him needing splinters in his ass, or do you otherwise need to say things that malign the kid? If not, then chances are you have no worries.

not bannable:
"I think Boeckman is a liability in big games when the pressure is on because he locks on receivers, looks flustered in the pocket, and can be clumsy and unaware on the move when he gets poor protection from the line. I'd like to see us give Pryor a chance, because I'm not convinced Boeckman can get us through the big games." (Not a great post, but not bannable. Why don't we expand upon this with specific examples from the game? Contribute to the conversation, instead of just making declarations.)

bannable:
"Chokeman should never be allowed on the field again, he shouldn't even suit up, or if he does, should never leave the bench because he sucks."

Here's a link with a basic list of fallacies:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_fallacies

I highly recommend checking that out. Avoid those, absolutes, and petulance without substance -- and I don't see how you or anyone would get banned.

Qualify statements.

"I think X." This isn't enough, knowing what you think means little if I don't understand why you think it. Expand. "Y and Z lead me to believe X."
"X is forever or absolute." More shit, of the worst type. "Based on X, it's hard to imagine Y." Fine. "Right now, I can't get my head past X." Fine.
"X is an inarguable fact." You better back this one up, or I'll choke you myself just for speaking in absolutes.

You can say basically anything you want as long as you qualify it, and in the process, CREATE conversation as opposed to stifling it.

For the sake of transparency, here are some posts that resulted in temp-bans. Consider the common themes. (Note: I'll focus on Boeckman posts as an example, because it's convenient. It would be just as easy to do it with the coaching situation, o/d lines, the site itself, etc.)

Someone please tell me why we even bothered with this game? We will never have the right recruits to play against ANY team that has much better weather than the ENTIRE midwest. What recruit would want to play in the cold? There is NO loyalty anymore. This has been going on for years. It has now reached the highest point. If I was a recruit coming out of high school - why would I play in the freezing ass cold with fat ugly women? Ban me please - I waste too much time on this board every day. And if you ban me, think about this. At least I WENT to OSU. Over half the people on this board are just fans. This is the MOST embarrassed I have ever been. And guess what - this is NOT whining. THIS IS FACT!!

The boys must have been chugging a big case of Choka Cola again. I cant take this shit anymore.

boeckman is a waste of space. and you website is too busy blowing tressel and todd to let anyone voice that opinion. i for one won't visit a site again that is too chicken shit to express reality. tressel needs to go. boeckman needs to have splinters in his ass. this team is going nowhere. accept that. ban my ip too bc i wont be visiting this piece of shit site again

Why are we keeping up this charade? He (Boeckman) just isn't good. Zero poise. Zero talent. Zero smart.

He's an embarassment to this team.

This is Pryors team... he looks infinately better than a 25 year old.

It's time for Boeckman and Tressel to go.

There's more, some worse, some better -- but you get the idea. None of these promote discourse, they're just cases of individuals venting at the expense of fellow fans.

Here are critiques (sharp ones, in some cases) that not only didn't get banned, but were well embraced as contributions to the conversation:

TB didn't play with as much poise and composure out there as Pryor. He's struggled with that for a while now - maybe going all the way back to Wisky or MSU last year. Beanie stepped up and took the leadership role in those two games last year and we got by. Opposing teams have to face a real threat from our offense, and it doesn't appear that TB poses a real threat out there. When opposing d's hit back and land a good punch, TB has difficulty shaking it off (mentally, not physically). And, for whatever reason - call it the "glass jaw" effect, or whatever - they're able to defuse TB's threat very quickly and effectively.

Todd definitely has skills, but I have honestly never seen a player whose game falls apart so quickly at the first sign of adversity. Todd looked very good during the first quarter, and he threw a beautiful pass to Robo for a "touchdown" in the second quarter ... but after that play was called back due to holding, Boeckman more or less fell apart. On the very next series, with Ohio State still very much in the game down only 14-3 and moving the ball quite well on a pair of 11-yard runs by Pryor and Herron, Boeckman threw a picture perfect strike to Rey Maualuga for a pick six. Not only did that play seal defeat for the Buckeyes, it also likely earned Maualuga the Award formerly known as Butkus. In the second half, here is a complete list of Boeckman's pass plays, in order: sack; incompletion; intentional grounding; sack; interception. And then Terrelle Pryor finished out the game. . . . Sixth-year senior Todd Boeckman is not the answer. Period. I'm sure that Todd is a great guy and all, but he had two chances to lead this team to a national championship, and he didn't get the job done. No shame in that - he joins Cornelius Greene, Art Schlichter, Bobby Hoying, Joe Germaine, and Troy Smith as Buckeye quarterbacks who didn't quite make it to the top.

The player we have seen the last 6 games looks nothing like the guy who manhandled Penn State in as hostile a situation as you can come into. Todd's biggest asset was his gunslinger mentality, and he has lost that. Football is a game of inches and split second decisions, by holding onto the football for an extra half a second because you don't have the right amount of faith in your decision nothing good can happen. That split second most of the time is the difference between a completion or an interception. I hate to see this happen to a kid who has waited his time and paid his dues, but it sure seems like our offense needs to go in a different direction right now.

No doubt I could find 'better' examples for both sides, there are harsher critiques of Boeckman, the lines, the coaches, that are alive, well, and open for discussion here right now -- because they're framed responsibly, rationally, and generally promote discussion and represent qualified/quantified opinion. Then there's a lot of crap that's been culled out because all it does is amplify the pain we're feeling, collectively. That's a service that the mods (not me, the mods and admins) offer while they're suffering the same feelings the rest of us are. It's easy to just vomit your bile all over fellow fans on a website, it's hard to clean that up.

Our system is NOT perfect. Some people will, have, and did receive warnings and bannings that shouldn't have. Where we have an opportunity and reason to correct, we do. Where people ask us to take another look, or express regret or improved understanding -- we often do that too. We have standards that are open to interpretation, and a lot of eyes taking a look at posts. Particularly during the game when everything's fresh, that's a very difficult task. So no, I won't claim perfection, I will say that I need this to be a place where I can visit without feeling worse about the game, the team, etc. That doesn't mean everything has to be bright and shiny, it just means we have to maintain some balance and reason. I expect everyone to contribute to that -- mod, poster, admin, even lurker.

No one is grading your posts. No one is telling you what to say and what not to say. What we are saying is that there's an established atmosphere that we wish to maintain. Many are reading more into this than is actually present. Bashing is unwelcome. Bile is unwelcome. Criticism is not only welcome, but it's embraced, as long as it's responsibly positioned and meaningfully explained. That goes for criticism about the players, coaches, the site, me, whatever.

We do not squelch voices. We DO defend the opportunity to be heard. No one can be heard if the majority of the posts are "we suck."

Finally, let me say this -- I started BP because I didn't agree with the way other sites handled their administration and general approach. I wanted a place that would NEVER be guilty of tearing a player down personally, where players themselves could see passionate but fair and objective fans. NOT cheerleaders, not blind zealots, just reasonable fans. BP isn't for everyone, and if it's not for you, you're fortunate to have a wealth of alternatives available to you. None of those do it either? Start your own. If you feel there's a segment of the fans not represented by the sites currently available, then step up and put one together. That's not sarcasm, my whole purpose was trying to create a home for fans that didn't really have one at the time of BP's formation -- and here we are.

As someone who was/ is banned, I think there is many of us don't know about the infractions system and how it works. Some clarity(pun)would always be welcomed. :tongue2: Say; How many points and /or what kind lead to a banning?

Generally speaking, problem posts draw warnings. Mods/admins may flag a post by choosing from a predefined list of infractions that come with predefined point values. In most cases, the point values are not sufficient for a single infraction (or even two) to result in a ban. Without looking at the numbers (which I can do if anyone is curious about that much detail), you might get two low point value infractions/warnings before a third triggers your first ban. The bans are tiered by duration. Short ban for the first time, a little longer the next, and so on all the way up to permanent bannings.

Points, and past bannings, decay over time. You, having been banned before, will be seen by the system as someone who has never been banned after enough time has past. It takes more time for a bigger infraction to decay than it does a minor one.

Admins have what we'll loosely call administrative discretion, and they're encouraged to use it. So when someone comes in here and spams, or just gets straight to flaming, they bypass the warnings and just go straight to permabans.

The system, as set up, is meant to protect both sides. Warnings to users so they may better understand, or at least have an opportunity to address what provoked the action before a ban happens. Tiered bannings to demonstrate the consequences, without jumping directly to permanent action.

The overwhelming volume of trolls, flamers, and even out of control locals during games, particularly a disaster like last night, means that there's less time and opportunity to try and correct. Hence, limited duration zero tolerance approaches. In some cases we have to make some corrections the next day, in other cases we don't, and the "time out"s expire without incident.

Those are the system values for infractions, though relying on them to use up one's chances would be poor strategy as they are often overridden. We up the ante with custom infractions where appropriate - for example, getting three shots at a 15-point Trolling infraction is unlikely, and Game Thread Whining was at least a 14-day vacation yesterday.

I think if a person has graduated from elementary school they should be able to understand what would put them on vacation:) just by reading one of Clarity's posts. In fact, they should have understood it last week when Grad created a thread were a number of people told people how to react after the game. People who are sports fans should know how to react after their team loses a game or they are not really much of a sports fan.

These happen every day. I was surprised Mili didn't call random people at the game "dipshit" it has become so much a part of who he is for me. I was looking forward to it! You disappointed me, Mili.

Just from these two alone I know now that I have 40 pts and two infractions that will never go away. Sorry about that again, CCI> :wink2:

I think that if you respect others in here and show some decency and sportsmanship you would never have to worry about being banned.

Need to give credit where credit's due...

This is exceptionally level-headed for a State Penn grad! Are you sure you're not doing all this as part of your PhD dissertation research?

It is all part of a grand and entirely unauthorized social experiment. I can't claim any tie to State Penn anymore though (at least any more than OSU), I have a George Washington University email address now. Go, uh, Colonials? Do they have an athletic department? I don't know.

Thanks for all the hard work to make BP run like it does. Even as angry as I was with the loss last night, it made me feel a lot better to come in and talk about it with all the other Buckeye fans. The mods did a great job at restraining the chaos of last night and there was some really good conversation on the game. BP is the class of all sites imo and I don't even bother going to other sites anymore for the most part.

Thanks for making this site like it is and all the hard work. As tough as the loss was last night, it helped a lot to be able to come in and read all the civil discussion, so really the mods did an outstanding job of getting rid of the idiots. This site is the class of all Buckeye sites for a reason, and I don't even waste my time going anywhere else, for the most part anyways.
