Agreed. My podiatrist was able to custom fit orthotics for my (very) flat feet and recommended running shoes. For three years now I've had those same shoes (Asics GT2090's) and have enjoyed every minute running without any ankle and heel pain.

Barring that, the least you could do is go to a running store that analyzes your stride and picks the best shoe for the way your foot moves.
