Ryan was probably the most dominant pitcher of the modern era. People simply didn't get hits off of him in the 70s and early 80s. You either struck out or you walked. How he never won a Cy Young award in his career is a mystery. Had he gotten even average run support for the majority of his career I think he could have approached 400 wins. No one is ever going to come close to Cy Young's 511.
Just to add to this, in 1987 Ryan lost 16 games but led league in ERA, ERA+, SO, FIP, hits per 9, SO per 9, SO to BB ratio...absolutely ridiculous stats
