Michael "Mike" Current (September 17, 1945 ? January 16, 2012) was a college and professional offensive lineman in the 1960s and '70s.

Current played left tackle for the Ohio State Buckeyes under head coach Woody Hayes. After backing up All American Jim Davidson as a sophomore, Current became a starter as junior in 1965. Prior to his senior year, he was named a team co-captain, along with defensive back John Fill and center Ray Pryor.

Current was selected in the third round of the 1967 AFL/NFL common draft by the American Football League's Denver Broncos. He was traded to the AFL's Miami Dolphins where he played for two games before being traded back to the Broncos. He played with the AFL Broncos from 1967 through 1969 and for the NFL Broncos from 1970 through 1975. He was picked up by the NFL Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the 1976 veteran allocation draft, and returned to the NFL Dolphins from 1977 through 1979. He died of an apparent suicide in 2012

Polk County sheriff's officials said a man apparently shot himself Monday morning at a Baskett Slough National Wildlife Refuge viewing area.

Sheriff's officials said Michael Current, 66, of Las Vegas, apparently fatally shot himself with a shotgun. Current also has lived in Silverton.

Off-duty paramedics found him dead on a viewing platform off Highway 22 west of Dallas about 9 a.m.

Current played 13 years in the National Football League as an offensive lineman with the Denver Broncos, Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Miami Dolphins.

The 6-foot-5-inch, 274-pounder started 164 of the 169 games in which he played after being drafted in the third round (pick No. 58) of the 1967 NFL draft by the Broncos.

The Lima, Ohio, native, who went to Ohio State University, also volunteered as a youth football coach in the Silverton area.

"He was an awesome guy, and all he wanted to do was help kids in his community," said Jim McIntire, vice president of Silverton Pop Warner youth football. "The kids absolutely loved him."

Given our righteous response to the foul occurrences in State College, I'm surprised not to see more expressions of outrage here.

The police record suggests that Current was a pretty miserable human being. It may be best for everyone that his life ended as it did - though earlier may have been better for many young people.

Kind of a yo-yo reaction, justifiably, on my part. At first I think, you hate to see a former Buckeye killing himself. Then I hear about allegations of sexual abuse and the kind of character he had. Now I'm appalled to think he ever wore the scarlet and grey. Finally, I learn the location was 14 miles from his hotel and there was no vehicle at the scene. Sounds as if he went to great lengths to kill himself in seclusion--how thoughtful--or someone took care of him in revenge. Either way, the only real tragedy here is he escaped the plight of prisoners convicted of sexual abuse against children. They get the treatment. Certainly would explain why he would want to end his own life.

I think we're a little different than they are in Happy Valley.

Mike Current leaves behind mysteries
Family, friends, associates describe many sides to former NFL player
Jan. 21, 2012

At 9 a.m. Monday, Michael Current’s body was found by off-duty paramedics on a bench at a Baskett Slough National Wildlife Refuge viewing area.

His last moments of life came during the night or in the morning hours, when he apparently turned a shotgun on himself and pulled the trigger, authorities said.

There was no vehicle parked at the site. He left no note there, said Sgt. Michael Holsapple of the Polk County Sheriff’s Office.

What Current did leave behind, however, were scores of unanswered questions; mysteries that likely never will be solved.

Michael Current was many things in life: a football player, a father, a grandfather, a writer, a coach, an angler and an entrepreneur.

He played professionally for the Denver Broncos, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Miami Dolphins. He was an avid outdoorsman who, at one point owned a fishing lodge in Canada.

He has been called honest, straightforward, determined and caring, according to his friends. A self-published author, he penned a couple of books — a memoir about his life in the National Football League and novels set in the Canadian wilderness.

He was a volunteer with youth football. He drove a school bus in Silverton.

Current twice was divorced, and he had financial woes. He also had heart problems and lung cancer, according to family members.

At the time of his death, he was facing five charges of sex abuse and one charge of luring a minor — allegedly using pornographic material to elicit sex from the children.

The football player
Jan. 21, 2012

Michael Wayne Current was born in Lima, Ohio, on Sept. 17, 1945, to Wayne and Clarice Current, according to an online memorial created by his sons, who are listed as J.T., Justin and Anthony.

Their father, they wrote, was a skilled basketball player in high school. But it was football that would carry Current into his future.

Current went on to play left tackle for Ohio State University, where he was coached by the iconic Woody Hayes, and was a letterman in 1965 and 1966. He was also named a co-captain the latter year, according to Ohio State athletics spokesman Jerry Emig.

"It's a tribute to only the best individuals on the team in terms of character and in terms of abilities and leadership qualities," Emig said.

When some remember Current, it's his size that first comes to mind.

"Nothing ever stood out about him except his size," said Dan Green, an acquaintance in Spearfish, S.D., where Current lived for about a decade.

Current stood at 6 feet, 5 inches tall and weighed 274 pounds. In 1967, he was a third-round draft choice for the Denver Broncos. He went on to play 13 seasons in the NFL ? nine years with the Broncos, one with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and three, from 1977 to 1979, with the Miami Dolphins, where he ended his NFL career.
