OL Josh Myers (2nd Team All American, Green Bay Packers)

Josh Myers ready to resume Rimington dominance for Ohio State

Josh Myers should already have more awards on his shelf.

Unfortunately for the Ohio State center, he didn’t have any brand-name recognition as a first-time starter last season. So even though he was playing at a level high enough that some NFL talent evaluators believe he could have skipped to the professional ranks after just one year in the lineup, Myers still wasn’t able to overcome the preseason hype that existed elsewhere.

That’s not going to be a problem this season. And while he will almost certainly be even better after another year of development, if he just gives the Buckeyes exactly what he did as a redshirt sophomore again, Myers is almost certainly going to be a Rimington Trophy finalist — and a decent bet even in February to become another winner for a program which has dominated that award.

First, the Buckeyes have to solidify their plans for Myers. But it would qualify as a surprise if position coach Greg Studrawa elected to slide him back to guard considering just how productive Myers was at one of the most challenging positions on offense. The fact that Ohio State could even have a debate about moving one of the best centers in the country to another spot is a testament to the remarkable depth on hand — and certainly a tribute to the bright future for Harry Miller.

Miller arrived both physically and mentally ready for the position a year ago, and Ohio State won’t bat an eye if the second-year lineman needs to take over the snapping duties for some reason this season. He is the future at the position for the Buckeyes, there’s no question about that. But Myers is the present. And as both Pat Elflein and Billy Price can attest, there is incredible value to gaining experience at guard before taking over as the anchor of the unit.

There’s still going to be competition at guard, though, particularly since Enokk Vimahi is sticking around instead of taking a two-year church mission as originally planned. So, while Miller might be tabbed as a potential favorite for a starting job heading into spring practice, the fight for that last spot on the interior of the line is going to be heated since Myers and Wyatt Davis aren’t leaving the lineup anytime soon.

Both of those guys have already drawn praise as two of the best blockers in the country, and this year should have a dramatically different feel for them now that every preseason watch list and All-American team should be including them. Those projections are going to have Josh Myers at center, of course, and that’s really where he should stay for the Buckeyes for one more year as well.

Re: Rimington Trophy or bust? That’s an absurdly high standard to match, but it had effectively become the expectation after Pat Elflein and Billy Price went back-to-back as the best centers in the nation

Just sayin': It's not out of the realm of possibilities for Josh Myers (2020 or 2021) and Harry Miller (2021 or 2022) to duplicate that feat.

OL Josh Myers
The other interior offensive linemen eligible for the 2021 NFL Draft should also go in the first round, or at least receive a first-round grade. Josh Myers might have a tougher time finding a home in the first round; only 12 centers have been selected in the first round since 2000, but one of them was former Ohio State center Billy Price. Myers has a chance to be No. 13 with a good showing next year alongside Davis. Myers could be in line for the Rimington Trophy and All-American honors at his position. If he tests well next spring at the NFL Combine and impresses the right people, he’ll be a first rounder. He certainly has the talent.

Wyatt Davis, Josh Myers Talk Quarantine, Home Workouts, More

Josh Myers

+ The last few months have been hard, but the Zoom meetings and keeping in touch with everybody has kept him sane. People are doing what they can. He has enough weights at home that he can do whatever he needs to do. “Other than that, just trying to stay sane.” He’s also trying to keep up with internships so that he’s not just doing nothing.

+ “You can tell Coach Stud misses us.” Every Zoom meeting starts with casual conversation and everybody is jumping on the call well before the meetings start so that they can visit with each other and laugh and talk. They can have entire meetings where they don’t talk about football. It’s just mental stuff.

+ Offensive line play is so different from any other position in spots. You have to be athletic enough to move, but powerful enough to push defensive linemen around. There is equipment at OSU that is critical in developing those techniques that nobody has access to right now. He works out with his brother and they do drills and his brother works as the blocking sled that gets pushed around.

+ The camaraderie in the weight room will be even better when they return. They won’t take it for granted when they return. They miss each other.

+ They are still leading by being vocal in meetings and helping Coach Stud. They show the young guys that they care about them and they love them. They want them to get better and they help however they can.

+ Only having to replace two starters this year makes things easier than it could have been if they were replacing four starters. This is a veteran group that has been together. And that will show when they get back into the swing of things.

+ Asked if the team would want to play football this year if there are no fans in the stands or students on campus, he said he would do whatever it takes to play this year. He is personally willing to make those sacrifices. Quarantining, whatever. In order to do it, they’d have to do it in an orderly way to make sure that other people aren’t getting sick, but yes, absolutely he would sign any waiver.

+ The majority of his fears regarding the coronavirus are mostly geared towards his family. He doesn’t want to pass it on to his family. That’s the thing that scares him the most. But being back in Columbus, he would be away from his family and shielding them from himself.

+ Spring ball is critical for everybody, especially the young guys.

+ He thinks Mickey Marotti would be able to get them ready for practice in two weeks. Workouts would be in smaller groups and could be lasting all day in order to get the entire team finished.

+ It would be a nightmare to lose this season. He is so excited for this season. It’s a critical time for development and elevating their games. The thought of not playing this season is terrifying and a worst-case scenario.

+ Myers gets up around 7:15 and works out at 8:00. He works out with his brother every morning. They go and do their field work after the lift. He’s done with that around 10. Then there’s a meeting around 12:00 pm. Then after that he is working on setting up an internship in order to graduate. Then there’s homework. After that, relaxing and spending time with family.

+ You could tell early on in the spring there were going to be some big jumps this spring. It’s still wide open as to who will be in those two open offensive line spots. “I have all of the confidence in the world in any of those guys.” The culture has been instilled from last season. Anything short of grading out as champions and dominating was considered a failure.

JOSH MYERS - CENTER
Myers was an absolute stud as a first-year starter in 2019, bringing home second-team All-Big Ten honors.

Flanked by Jonah Jackson and Wyatt Davis, as noted above, Myers and company formed one of the truly elite interior offensive lines in college football.

Myers showed an elite ability to get wide to the second level, creating cutback lanes with seal blocks or simply road-grading guys lined up straight ahead.

He's mean, strong, experienced and smart, and he should make a legit run at All-American and Rimington Trophy honors this fall.

If that wasn't enough to earn him a spot on this list, his backup could very well be a true freshman. Luke Wyper is talented and his time will come, make no mistake, but history says it's a rare breed that can start at any of the offensive line positions from day one.

Of course, expected starting left guard Harry Miller could always play center but even if that happened, it would leave a big hole that would also be filled by a talented but extremely green reserve.

Just sayin': I'd have Fields as #1, Wade as #2, and Davis and Myers as 3.a. and 3.b on list. Wyatt Davis and Josh Myers will the consistant "anchors" on the OL.
