Q: What do you think the chances are of former Buckeye Jim Lachey getting into the Pro Football Hall of Fame? In my opinion, he was one of the very best offensive tackles ever. ? James Forrester, Toledo

A: A three-time All-Pro player, Jim Lachey had a terrific career, but a lot of multiple All-Pro players don?t make the Hall of Fame. Lachey isn?t on the current Hall of Fame ballot, and one Hall voter told me he considers Lachey?s chances to be ?extremely slim.? The Pro Football Hall of Fame might be the hardest to achieve among the major sports because of the large number of players and limited spots available. Think of all the dominant players, such as Cris Carter, who are still awaiting induction. ? Bill Rabinowitz

DOWN TO THE FINISH: Jim Lachey was an All-American OT at Ohio State in the 1980s. He went on to a glittering All-Pro career in the NFL.

Now he works as a radio analyst on Buckeyes games.

Here's his insight into what this season has been like for the Buckeyes.

"The light at the end of the tunnel is real big. They took 11 hurdles and were successful," he said. "The coaches don't have to ask much now. They're all believers. It's real easy for all these guys to buy into what coach Meyer wanted out of them. If they're not doing something like they've done each and every week, if they're not physical enough in practice, you'll probably see the captains step up and say something like 'Hey come on guys, lets finish this off. This is it. This is your last opportunity.'"

Lachey never had a season without a postseason trip during his days at Ohio State, 1981-84. Each year the Buckeyes played in a better bowl: Liberty, Holiday, Fiesta and then Rose.

He's not sure how the players, who are not permitted to go to a bowl because of NCAA sanctions, will react when the season comes to an end on Saturday afternoon.

"I don't know if anybody ever in the modern era of football dreams about going undefeated and not going somewhere. But that's the price we pay," he said. "It's going to be weird after that Michigan game, once it's all said and done."

The 2002 Ohio State team will be honored during Saturday's game. Lachey reflected on then and now remembering Ohio State radio voice Paul Krebs' call after the win over Michigan.

"Ten years ago in 2002, Paul was on the radio screaming about 'Hey, we're heading to the desert!" Lachey said. "Now I don't know where we're headed. Headed to High Street, I guess."

Bobby Carpenter to Fill In for Jim Lachey on Ohio State’s Radio Broadcast of The Game As Lachey Attends Son’s Senior Day at Iowa

Jim Lachey won‘t be on the call of this weekend’s Ohio State/Michigan game – for a good reason.

The longtime color commentator on Ohio State’s radio broadcasts will miss his first game since the start of the 1997 season. Instead, he will be at Iowa to attend his son’s Senior Day game against Nebraska.

Former Ohio State linebacker Bobby Carpenter, who co-hosts Morning Juice on 97.1 The Fan, will fill in for Lachey on the Ohio State broadcast of The Game.

Lachey’s absence from Saturday’s broadcast will snap a streak of 357 consecutive game broadcasts for the former Ohio State offensive lineman.

“Obviously my heart pulls me both directions, but for the good of my family, I gotta go see Luke and be a parent for this weekend and get a chance to walk out there with my wife Ann and it'll be Luke's final (home game at Iowa) Friday night,” Lachey said during Ohio State’s postgame show on Saturday. “I wish it was a noon start (on Friday), but it's not, it's a night game against Nebraska. But I'm excited ... It's gonna be special. The whole family's gonna be there. It'll be a lot of fun.”

Lachey’s son, Luke, is a fifth-year senior tight end at Iowa. A captain for the Hawkeyes this season, Lachey has caught 25 passes for 218 yards this year.
