OL Jim Cordle (Official Thread)

I have a sneaky suspicion that Jimmy will be a Rookie Free Agent after the weekend.

Just a hunch...but I think he gets taken based on his versatility. The guy can play back-up center in the NFL and also guard. He's extremely intelligent and a high character guy. The type of player you pick up in the 6th or 7th and keep on your roster for years as solid depth.

I hope you're right. I just have my doubts.

Cordle skipped, then signed by Giants
Former Buckeye agrees to free agent deal with New York
BY JOE ARNOLD ? The Eagle-Gazette Staff ? April 25, 2010

LANCASTER --Jim Cordle was exactly where he didn't want to be Saturday -- in front of a television, watching the NFL Draft wind down.

By the time the last pick was made shortly after 5 p.m., part of Cordle was wishing he'd spent the afternoon in Columbus watching Ohio State's spring game instead of glued to the television.

"It was kind of a sad day really," he said. "I was sitting there watching, and there was no activity on the phone. I was getting nervous."

The nerves, however, didn't last long.

A phone call from the New York Giants ended Cordle's wait. The former Buckeye and Lancaster native agreed to a free agent deal with the Giants roughly 90 minutes after the conclusion of the draft.

"My agent was working with teams after the draft, and then (Giants offensive line) coach (Pat) Flaherty called," Cordle said. "He said 'We want you to be a New York Giant.' "

He reports to the team's mini-camp on Thursday.

Cordle and the Giants had been in discussions throughout the past week, he said. Cordle's thinking, however, New England might draft him late in the seventh round.

He worked out for the Patriots, and New England had four picks in the final round.

"At any rate, as we got through those rounds, I was thinking 'That's OK,'" Cordle said. "I had it in my head that I was going to be a free agent."

Cordle's agent, Joe Flanagan, was in negotiations with the Bears, Packers, Lions, Browns and Dolphins before Flaherty's phone call.

"I felt with the Giants, it was the best situation," Cordle said. "The Giants have always had one of the best offensive lines in the league. To go there and learn from those guys and to get some experience is going to be great."

Jim Cordle was not just a three-year starter on the Ohio State offensive line, but a key component of the winningest senior class in Buckeye history, which captured five Big Ten titles, five BCS bowl bids, five wins over Michigan and a Rose Bowl victory. A starter for Ohio State at center, tackle and guard, Cordle, the pride of Lancaster, Ohio, graduated last December with a 3.27 average from the Fisher College of Business, earning repeated academic all-Big Ten honors. A tremendous team leader, Cordle made a lasting mark in his commitment to outreach, highlighted by his organization of a bowling fundraiser that raised nearly $20,000 for Special Olympics in his home Fairfield County. Jim is now a member of the New York Giants in the National Football League.

A practice squad player makes $5,200 per week. Although plentiful, it's still only a fraction of the $325,000 minimum contract per season in the NFL.

Nonetheless, practice squad players don't think their paychecks are anything to complain about.

"$5,200 a week is a lot of money," said Jim Cordle, another rookie from OSU on the New York Giants practice squad. "I'm definitely used to living off not much money, and it's more than enough to keep me going."

Something they can complain about is the grueling pace of their practices. Practice squad players often play on both offense and defense in addition to special teams. And because their NFL careers are already in limbo, they can ill afford to submit to exhaustion or injury.

"You never get a break," Cordle said. "You better yourself everyday, but the non-stop practice and extra conditioning is probably the hardest thing about it."

That is an interesting way to go about it. I am intrigued as to his making that decision was to avoid bouncing around like Barton did his first couple years or if showing some loyalty, even to the practice squad, will come back positively for him with the Giants...

If it was early in the season I suspect he would've jumped at it. But with one game left TB is just trying to fill holes due to injuries. Cordle needed to think about next season and what was his best place.
