OL Alex Boone (Official Thread)

very true. He was missed like heck but heisman.
Sorry just SAY NO WAY

Without an excellent line Troy is not a Heisman hopeful. Add in an exceptional LT aka Alex Boone who Troy loves and then you're Heisman chances look promising. Look, Alex is great and so is Troy but if you don't have Alex on the line Troy wouldn't have a lot of the promise of getting the heisman. There would be too many busted collapsing plays like today. In that part, I say they both deserve a heisman. Troy has mentioned many times without his excellent line he'd be no where. That might be an overstatement but probably more accurate than not

Here's how I'd handle the Chris Wells situation. Play him against Northwestern next week. The Wildcats' win over Iowa and the Buckeyes' struggles notwithstanding, that shouldn't be a real tough game for Ohio State. What happens to the freshman's head should be of concern to coach Jim Tressel and the Buckeyes. But that's not nearly as important as the path to a national title. That's why no matter what Wells does against Northwestern, I wouldn't play him against Michigan. The way this offense shapes up, Wells isn't a player who can win that game for the Buckeyes. But with a critical fumble at the wrong time, he could help lose it.
Ohio State missed left tackle Alex Boone on Saturday. The offensive line had its toughest day of the season, allowing quarterback Troy Smith to take far more hits than usual and not clearing holes for running back Antonio Pittman in the second half. Tim Schafer, Boone's replacement, is a veteran, but he's not the beast that Boone can be. It'd be nice to see Boone next week. But if he's not healthy for Michigan's defensive line, that's really a problem.
It has to have been a tough season for linebacker John Kerr. The senior finally found his way into the starting lineup at the start of the year after sitting out two seasons following his transfer from Indiana. But he's lost his job in the second half of the season, with Curtis Terry and Marcus Freeman taking all the snaps at outside linebacker. Yet when Ohio State's defense was rallying itself on the sideline late in the game, Kerr was right in the faces of his teammates, his face curled in a snarl as he urged for a final stop. That counts for something.
The wind was at his back, and the field goal came at the end of the first half, when the Buckeyes had the game in full control. So it wasn't under extreme pressure. But the 50-yard field goal by freshman Aaron Pettrey that put Ohio State up, 17-0, in the final minute of the first half was another line on his r?sum?. He's now 8-of-11 this season, 2-of-3 from 50 yards and beyond. You should be just a little more confident in him than you were before.

The line REALLY struggled without Boone in there.

Pittman had defenders in the backfield on probably 80% of his carries and Troy didn't get much protection at all. Surprising that Boone's loss turned out to be so valuable. I'll be glad to have him back ASAP!

A lot of the plays we run are off the left side of the line because Alex is so good. Between Alex and Steve Rehring handling the left side of the line its too much for most defenders. I just hope he's back for the Michigan game.

It's hard to block 9 guys with 7 guys.
Look at the play breakdown and you will see that JT either was sending a message to his kids, or because of the wind didn't really want to take any chance of losing the game and was content to punt and play defense after the first drive of the second half.

Understandable. I was at the game so I didn't get a good view on how many they had in the box, but from what I've now seen (Buckeye Replay and Football Weekly) and heard they were stuffing the box pretty bad. That and the bland offensive playcalls probably added to the struggle. It'll be different in two weeks! Go Bucks!

I am not sure. Mum is the word around Tressel. I heard he had a procedure done to it so what that procedure is, is unknown. Draining. Surgery who knows. I just hope it doesn't take too long because we cannot afford to have him out. Northwestern is going to be more of a battle and all I can is the boys on the line better start finishing their blocks and have more tenacity than they showed against IL.

The O-Zone is reporting Boone to be second on the two-deep behind Schafer for Northwestern and notes that Boone is expected to play in the game.

That is actually somewhat encouraging. The fact he may play is what I like to hear but of course not at risk for keeping him injured.

I want ALEX back. The game is WAY too boring without him :wink2:

Dispatch

Boone is out

Offensive tackle Alex Boone did not play last week because of what has been described by sources as a minor knee injury, but he made the trip to Illinois. Yesterday, Tressel said Boone has been ruled out of playing again this week, and he will not travel to Northwestern.
Meanwhile, Tressel said freshman receiver Ray Small has done well in practice this week and will be in uniform Saturday. Small was knocked out momentarily by a hit in the Minnesota game two weeks ago and did not play last week.

This situation is a little wierd. I can't remember a player injury at Ohio State where the team has been so secretive about what is going on. Maybe Alex doesn't want his injury talked about and has not given consent for it to be discussed, but this sounds strange. There is something about the situation that just does not seem right. Anyhow, I hope he is back for The Game. The team will need him.
