It came as no surprise to Peter A. Brown that Ohioans find Ohio State football their favorite sports team in a poll taken by the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute released today.
Brown, the assistant director of the institute, said 1,342 Ohio voters were polled from Aug. 5-11, asking which teams ? only major league pro teams and Ohio State were part of the poll ? were their favorites.
"It's not a surprise the Buckeyes do best," said Brown in a telephone interview. "Successful state universities tend to energize the population."
Ohio State finished with a 58-28 percent margin over pro football in the state. The OSU men's basketball team finished with a 42-38 percent margin over the NBA's Cleveland Cavaliers.

OSU football unifies state like nothing else

If you visited DaytonDailyNews.com on Monday, Aug. 18, or read today's paper, you might have seen a story by Marc Katz on Ohio's favorite sports teams. The Quinnipiac University Polling Institute conducted a survey on that topic, focusing on professional sports and Ohio State University.
Not surprisingly, Ohio State football won.
I figured I'd tweak the rules a bit and offer my five favorite Ohio teams:
1. Ohio State football. What other team unites the state better than the Buckeyes? Whether you're a Browns fan or Bengals fan, you can find common ground here. And you have to admit there's a sense of pride driving through another Big Ten state, knowing the Buckeyes are the best.
2. Wright State basketball. Many of my favorite college memories are from watching Bill Edwards, Mark Woods and Co. whip fans into a frenzy at the Nutter Center. Ralph Underhill directing a game was a treat to watch by himself. Now, Brad Brownell's teams are just as much fun to watch.

I didn't know that Ohio only had 1 professional baseball team/football team. I love how they just left off the Browns and the Tribe :grr:

It doesn't come to a surprise that OSU is Ohio's favorite team...they are the only ones who can win games on a consistent basis (other than the Cavs and that's a big NO without Lebron)

OSU wins popular vote by a landslide

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

The Browns, Bengals, Cavaliers and other major sports teams in Ohio all attract ardent fans. But nobody sets the earth reverberating in the Buckeye State like well, the Buckeyes. A new Quinnipiac Poll unveiled yesterday dispensed with the trivial nonsense about the presidential race and got at what's really important on the day the Buckeyes opened Ohio Stadium to fans: What is the most popular major sports team in Ohio?
The Buckeyes easily come out on top versus respondents' favorite pro football team. The scarlet-and-gray's victory is smaller in basketball, with a four-point margin over the Cleveland Cavaliers.
The results would not be surprising if they were confined to central Ohio. But the dominance stretches from the Ohio River to Lake Erie.

Bob Hunter commentary: Wins, losses can explain results from sports poll

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

At first glance, results of the Quinnipiac Poll on Ohio's favorite sports teams are almost shocking. No one had to take a poll to discover that the Ohio State football team is a landslide favorite in central Ohio; if people here could find a way to grow scarlet-and-gray grass or breathe scarlet-and-gray oxygen, they would do it in a scarlet-and-gray second. But seeing the Buckeyes rule the roost statewide the way they did was an eye-opener.
A question Quinnipiac asked around the state: Whom do you root the hardest for, your favorite NFL team or the Ohio State football team? The answer: 58 percent for the Buckeyes, 28 percent for the NFL. Not surprised? Remember, the NFL is the most watched, most followed and most discussed sports league in America.
