Wow. Thanks Fungo. Apparently pathos reigns in other sports as well. Do understand the 'lack' of scholarships for sports other than football/basketball. Harsh reality, but don't see how this would be any different at another school. I may be naive, but was under the impression that the # of schollies was determined by the NCAA. Daughter swam, and believe there were five scholarships (full) available, and coach split them up so everyone could get a piece. Can anyone help clear away the fog for me? ps, these newcomers had better be or become VB superstars....

Yeah, that quote about "scholarship money" wasn't quite right. It's a scholarship limit issue with the NCAA. The NCAA gave these girls (the seniors) that free year for COVID, but after this most recent season, the scholly limits kick back in. So these 5 could have stuck around for year 5 at OSU, but that would have forced the coach to either not bring in any freshman or start pushing other underclassmen out in order to keep the scholarship open for one more year of the seniors. In lieu of hamstringing the program for the next handful of years by not having enough underclassmen (underclasswomen?), they decided it would be best if the seniors moved on as if the free covid year didn't exist. I definitely get it and it probably make sense from the big picture perspective, but I expect next year's team will be a step back from this year.

FWIW, Podraza, Murr, and Gonzalez are all graduating from OSU with their masters degrees, Powell just finished her undergrad, and Moore will finish hers in the spring. I'm just hopeful none of them stay in the Big Ten!

Now is when it would be helpful if those controlling NIL purse strings realized there are athletes other than football players at tOSU. They could probably keep all 5 of these young ladies around for pocket change.

Yeah, although I don't see that as the issue here. To put it very indelicately, coach doesn't actually want these 5 to come back because of the long-term impact on the roster management. It's not that simple and I'm sure she'd love to have them back if she could do that without filtering other players out, but it just doesn't work with scholarship limits kicking back in. NCAA messes up everything.....imagine that!

Yeah, extra Covid year is a 'good news-bad news' kind of thing. Get that the competitive year was shortened, yet still received scholarship money, etc. But NOT allowing institutions (?) to extend a fifth year of scholarship money certainly negates the extra year largesse. Roster management is the woodchuck in the woodpile. You can see it in the football rosters. Kids that won't go further are hanging around the lockerroom, and taking minutes away from the freshmen/sophomores that really need them. Granted, the coaches do not have to play these older players, but heck, they've put in four years of practices, and are probably good enough to be valued backups on a college level, so (I know I would) hard to tell them to look elsewhere (yeah, I know it has already happened at tOSU). I'm hard-headed enough that I'd stick around simply because I love the game....Coach Jenn made probably one of the hardest decisions of her life - time will tell if it's the right one or not - and has to live with her decision. Even if tOSU wins the VB 'nati in three/four years, she'll still feel pain at this decision. One more thing the NCAA didn't think entirely through, or maybe said 'roster mgt isn't our problem' (which is more likely). Would be cool if buckeyeinthenati was right, and academic schollies were found, and maybe a couple of these young ladies came out of tOSU with doctorates...

“I'M SO MUCH MORE THAN A VOLLEYBALL PLAYER, SO MUCH MORE THAN SOMEONE WHO'S HAD HEART SURGERY. LITTLE PIECES OF EVERYTHING HAS FORMED ME INTO WHO I AM TODAY.”– SARAH SUE MORBITZER

“WE JUST CALL HER THE HEART OF THE TEAM. YOU HEAR THAT PHRASE OVER AND OVER AGAIN, AND SHE IS. BECAUSE SHE JUST GOES IN AND DOES HER JOB. SHE DOESN'T COMPLAIN, SHE DOESN'T MOAN ABOUT IT.”– JENN FLYNN OLDENBURG

Thanks to the above for showing us peons that the NIL is having an impact on 'other' sports. Glad to see these young VBers getting some splash along with their schollies. Cameras don't tell the tale, but looks like several are in the 6'+ range. Great for blocking and spiking balls back/over the nets. Didn't see any getting MBs or Range Rovers to tool around in campus though....adding to the above story of roster management, it appears to be that Jenn made some decent choices on her next layer of players. On court we'll see.

If you are into women's' volleyball, it's an interesting read:

How Nebraska volleyball plans to pack Memorial Stadium

i

With a long history of sellouts, Nebraska volleyball is moving into football's Memorial Stadium on Wednesday and could set an attendance record for women's sports.

i

After months of preparation, a Taraflex court has been installed in Memorial Stadium for Volleyball Day in Nebraska, and even Mother Nature seems to be getting on board for the one-day outdoor event

FOR GENERATIONS, NEBRASKANS have boasted that on football Saturdays, Memorial Stadium becomes the third-largest city in the state. On Wednesday, the place will become volleyball city. More than 91,000 people are expected to fill the stadium to watch two matches, potentially setting a record for the most-attended women's sporting event in the world. The record, 91,648, was set in March 2022 at a UEFA Women's Champions League match in Barcelona.
.
.
.
But the Badgers' one-upping the record nagged at Nebraska fans, who sent a flurry of emails to coach John Cook urging him to take his team somewhere to reclaim their record. After the season, he plotted. He initially pondered Pinnacle Bank Arena, Nebraska's basketball venue. It wasn't big enough.

After a couple of conversations, Alberts told Cook there was one place they could go: Memorial Stadium.

Cook was apprehensive. What if they sold only 10,000 tickets? He eventually agreed with one condition: That they bring in a musical act to perform after the match to help draw a bigger crowd. Tickets went on sale in late April -- $25 for adults, $5 for children. More than 82,000 seats sold within three days. No musical act had been announced yet.

But then the tickets for Nebraska’s night match against Omaha started selling and selling and selling, with 92,003 fans officially in attendance at the school’s Memorial Stadium for the Huskers’ match against Omaha on Wednesday night, setting a new world record for a women’s sporting event.

The former world record for attendance at a women’s event is was 91,648 for a Champions League soccer match between Barcelona and Wolfsburg held in Barcelona’s Camp Nou Stadium. The United States record was 90,185 for the 1999 World Cup Final played in the Rose Bowl.
