Junior Middle-Blocker Taylor Sandbothe reigned heavily on #16 Illinois at St. John’s Arena in an important victory 3-1. The dread she imposed upon the Illini would amass 19 kills along with a career high 11 blocks. The rejection total is sixth highest ever by a Buckeye in OSU history and the 3rd best mark versus a conference rival. Taylor imposed dominance offensively too as her attacking hit .417 which certainly attributed to her 19 kills.
Elizabeth Campbell too made her presence felt. She would have a total of 16 kills on the night – adding 13 digs for her 10th double-double of the long season. Valeria León delivered, as she always does, with 5 digs each set – hitting 19 for a final number.
The 12th-ranked Buckeyes (21-6, 10-5 B1G) needed the victory as they sent the Illini of Illinois (17-9, 8-7 B1G) back home following the four set win (16-25, 25-17, 25-18, 25-23).
It all began for the Buckeyes in the 2nd as they had dropped the first 16-25. Their focus and dominance generated the needed pace. Elizabeth Campbell would finish off the 2nd with a kill for the 25-17 win and bringing the match to 1-1.
The third set displayed a quick start for the Buckeyes as they build an early 8-3 lead before the Illini attempted a comeback in a stretch that brought it to 17-10 – eventually coming close 18-14. But three straight kills from the Buckeyes would cement the 25-18 win making it 2-1 for OSU.
Taylor Sandbothe totally took over in the fourth. After the Illini held an 8-6 lead the Buckeyes battled hard to bring it to a standstill at 18-18. The two teams engaged in a back and forth with ties at 20, 21, 22, and 23. But Taylor would have a kill that would seal the deal – giving the victory to the Buckeyes 3-1.
Ohio State returns to the court at St. John’s this coming Saturday (Nov. 14th) at 7 pm – hosting TTUN in a crucial conference battle.
Come & cheer on these ladies as they march on in Conference play and witness great things in the making.
See you there. GO BUCKEYES.
