The Ohio State University proudly has a Women’s Rugby team that is on the upsurge of character building, determination, and Scarlet & Gray pride.

On September 12th the Women’s Rugby season began with a marathon of grueling gladiator-style intensity. Grand Valley State and Pitt came to Fred Beekman Park located at 2200 Carmack Road off of Lane for a tri-battle which included the Buckeyes. The round – robin games strangely blended nicely to make a profoundly interesting one!

The Buckeyes would shine this afternoon with a combined 85-15 total.
Though the victory(ies) were sweet the essential motive was the game plan. The coaching staff led by Joel Bonnaud is very proud of this team as these young women followed instructions welcomingly, progressing as the scrimmages rolled on, becoming deciders on their own accord within the heat of battle. Their triumphant moment emerged following the 3 hours of play (9:30 am to 12:30 pm) with each scrimmage lasting 25 minutes – thus providing each team with 4 rounds of play – or 100 minutes of field action.

Last weekend they met up with TUN (The Team up North) @ Fred Beekman Park. Their troubles were launched even before the beginning of the match. The Buckeyes had a mere 2 subs, detrimental in any forming of strategy. The women began to get sloppy and were slow, unable to get any significant ball movement. 20 minutes into the game the Buckeyes would lose their three best players to injury. So with 3 of the top players out, only 2 subs, the Buckeyes were, in fact, 1 player short.

TUN had a full team. So their legs were fresh and their motivation soaring on their witness of the injured Buckeyes. The Buckeyes 14 players on the field though possessed that admirable Scarlet & Gray pride and determination. They fought to the very end with an actual score against TUN. That fighting spirit even raised a smile from the referee.

The lesson has been learned. Great teams don’t magically appear with a snap of the fingers. They are born of leadership, practice, and humility. These Women Buckeyes are providing a lesson of these three tremendous traits – and it should be noticed in Buckeye Nation.

Understand there is a history here with our Women here at The Ohio State University. In 2013 they finished the season as the College Rugby Championships Runner-ups. And in 2012 & 2013 were in the Top 8 of the country in the College 7’s National Championships; as well as in the Final 4 D1 USA Rugby Championships.

This tradition began in 1975 and has steamed ahead to a rather storied Rugby history that undoubtedly engages well in that fabled Scarlet & Gray line of success.

Club president Cyndi Campbell, Head Coach Joel Bonnaud, Backs Coach Stephanie Bowers and Forwards Coach Brittany Latham – are building a tremendous group of ladies here. This coming weekend (09/26) they travel west to South Bend where they will butt heads with The Fighting Irish. Let us wish them well @ https://www.facebook.com/osuwomensrugby and @OSUWRFC.

Revenue Sports for Lady Buckeyes is primarily focused on Basketball. Rugby is not in that tier among the gods @ OSU. So the games are free. I will keep all of The Buckeye Battle Cry fan base informed of the Women’s Rugby Club. So in return I expect you to take a hike to Fred Beekman Park or when the games are scheduled at Bevelhymer Park in New Albany to take a ride to cheer on this promising Buckeyes Women’s Rugby Club. They will show heart and fight that we have come accustomed to in Buckeye Nation.

And as a guide when you do go to one of these games below is the roster.
Enjoy. & GO BUCKEYES.
