Go Buckeyes!
Staff member
  • The Buckeyes travel to Ann Arbor (that whore) to take on scUM in a 4 game series commencing Friday. Hopefully the baseball Bucks will follow in the footsteps of the men's and women's basketball and football teams and continue OSU dominance over "them".

The Wolverines lost their last game to Toledo to fall to 16-12: dUMb loses, what a bummer

They are currently 4-4 in the Big 10.

More mindless scUM drivel related to baseball

    ANN ARBOR, Mich. -
Michigan scored five runs in the second and added two runs in the fifth, four in the sixth and three more in the seventh as it cruised to a 14-3 upset of No. 24 Ohio State Friday at Ray Fisher Stadium. The 14 runs and 19 hits by Michigan (17-12 overall, 5-4 Big Ten) were season highs against Ohio State (20-8, 6-3) this season.
Ohio State had only allowed four runs in the second inning all season, but Michigan spoiled that stat in a huge way by scoring five runs on five hits. A.J. Scheidt and Mike Schmidt plated the first two runs and the Eric Rose knocked in two more with a single to left. He went to second on the throw and stole third. A throw by OSU catcher Eric Fryer (So., Reynoldsburg, Ohio/Reynoldsburg) sailed high over third baseman Ronnie Bourquin (Jr., Canton, Ohio/Canton South) and allowed Rose to cross the plate to give the Wolverines a 5-0 lead.
The Buckeyes got on the score board in the top of the fourth inning, turning a lead-off double by Jedidiah Stephen (Sr., Caldwell, Ohio/Shenandoah) into a run after a single by Cody Caughenbaugh (Sr., Newark, Ohio/Licking Valley) and an RBI single up the middle by Wes Schirtzinger (Jr., Westerville, Ohio/Westerville North).
Michigan added a pair of runs on four straight hits to open the bottom of the fifth inning to build a 7-1 lead. Doug Pickens and Nate Recknagle drove in the two runs. Pickens singled to center to score Rose and Recknagle doubled down the left-field line to score Leif Mahler.
OSU starting pitcher Dan DeLucia (Jr., Columbus, Ohio/Bishop Watterson) walked the first batter he faced in the sixth inning and then gave up a home run to Mike Schmidt that gave Michigan a 9-1 lead. He got a ground out, but after he gave up a single to right to Mahler, 19th-year head coach Bob Todd went to his bullpen for Trey Fausnaugh (Jr., Circleville, Ohio/Westfall). Fausnaugh got Pickens to fly out to center, but Recknagle doubled to the wall in left-center to plate Mahler from first and Derek VanBruskirk singled to plate Recknagle and extend the Michigan lead to 10 runs, 11-1.

Four Michigan hits in the seventh yielded three runs as the Wolverines got one-out RBI from Rose, Mahler and Pickens to go up 14-1.
The Buckeyes added a pair of runs in the top of the ninth inning to pull within the 14-3 final score. Michigan reliever Ali Husain walked the first two batters he faced to start the inning. Jonathan Zizzo (So., Youngstown, Ohio/Sarasota [Fla.]) moved both runners into scoring position with a ground out before Justin Miller (Fr., Dayton, Va./Turner Ashby) grounded out to score Schirtzinger. Matt Angle (So., Whitehall, Ohio/Whitehall-Yearling) singled to drive home Jason Zoeller (Jr., Verona, Pa./Shady Side Academy).
Angle and Stephen each finished 2-for-4 to lead Ohio State's 10-hit offense. Mahler and Scheidt each had three hits for the Wolverines, though it was Schmidt and Rose who each drove in three runs. The Buckeyes had three errors.
DeLucia fell to 0-3 in four career starts vs. Michigan in losing for the second time in 2006 (5-2). It was his first loss in three Big Ten starts this season (2-1). Friday against the Wolverines, he allowed 10 runs (nine earned) on 12 hits with one walk and two strikeouts in 5.1 innings. Michigan freshman starter Zach Putnam lasted 7.1 innings and limited the Buckeyes to one run on eight hits. He walked one and struck out two to improve to 2-0 this season.
The teams continue the series Saturday with a doubleheader at 4:05 p.m. and will conclude the series Sunday with a single game at 1:05 p.m. The second game Saturday and the Sunday finale will be broadcast on AM 920 WMNI and on ohiostatebuckeyes.com.

    ANN ARBOR, Mich. -
Michigan used a pair of three-run home runs from Mike Schmidt and Adam Abraham to get out to an early 6-0 lead on its way to a 7-1 victory over No. 24 Ohio State in the first game of a doubleheader Saturday at Ray Fisher Stadium.
Schmidt hit his second home run in as many games, hitting one up in the wind that blew it over the left field fence to score three runs, giving the Wolverines a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning. He had a two-run home run Friday.
The good news for the Buckeyes in the third was that starter Cory Luebke (So., Maria Stein, Ohio/Marion Local) struck out the side. The bad news was Abraham, the Michigan designated hitter, delivered a two-out, three-run home run over the fence in left-center field. His second home run of the season gave the Wolverines a 6-0 lead.
Ohio State had only four base runners the first four innings of the game and only one had reached second base. Adam Schneider (Jr., Agoura Hills, Calif./Agoura) was walked with one-out and went to second when Wes Schirtzinger (Jr., Westerville, Ohio/Westerville North) was hit by a pitch. Michigan starter Paul Hammond struck out Jason Zoeller (Jr., Verona, Pa./Shady Side Academy) and got Josh Hula (Fr., Castalia, Ohio/Margaretta) to ground out and strand the two runners.
J.B. Shuck (Fr., Galion, Ohio/Galion) got the first Buckeye hit of the game to lead off the third, but he was erased when Matt Angle (So., Whitehall, Ohio/Whitehall-Yearling) grounded into a double play. Eric Fryer (So., Reynoldsburg, Ohio/Reynoldsburg) reached on a throwing error on the Wolverines' shortstop, but Ronnie Bourquin (Jr., Canton, Ohio/Canton South) flew out to end the inning.

After going in order in the fourth, Zoeller led off the top of the fifth with a double down the left field line. He had to stay at second when Hammond dropped a pop up by Hula, but he went to third when Shuck grounded into a double play. Angle struck out to strand Zoeller at third.
The Buckeyes avoided the shut out by scoring a run in the sixth. Fryer drew a walk to lead off the inning and then with two outs went to third on single to left-center field by Schneider and scored on a base hit to about the same spot by Schirtzinger to make the score 6-1.
Michigan got the run back in the bottom of the inning getting an RBI single to left by Jeff Kunkel to score Derek VanBuskirk to make the score 7-1. VanBuskirk led off the inning with a triple to the gap in right-center field.
Luebke took the loss to fall to 4-3 on the year. He went the distance, allowing seven runs on nine hits in 6.0 innings. He walked one and struck out four. Hammond took the win, allowing the lone run on five hits with a pair of walks and five strikeouts.
Eric Rose joined Schmidt and Abraham with two hits as the Wolverines out-hit Ohio State 9-5. The Buckeyes had hits from Angle, Schneider, Schirtzinger, Zoeller and Shuck.
Ohio State (20-8 overall, 6-4 Big Ten) and Michigan (18-12, 6-4) will play the third game of the series immediately following this contest and will conclude the series Sunday at 1:05 p.m. Both games will be broadcast on AM 920 WMNI and on ohiostatebuckeyes.com.

    Box Score

ANN ARBOR, Mich. - Michigan shortstop Leif Mahler drove in the winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning to lift his team to a 2-1 win that put the Wolverines in the hunt for their first series sweep against the Buckeyes since 1987. Michigan beat Ohio State 14-3 Friday and won 7-1 in the first game of the doubleheader Saturday at Ray Fisher Stadium. The fourth and final game of the series will be played Sunday at 1:05 p.m.
A.J. Scheidt led of the inning with a single up the middle and was bunted over by Mike Schmidt on the sacrifice. The Buckeyes intentionally walked Eric Rose, but Mahler, who attended St. Charles Prep in Columbus, sent a check-swing single over the head of Ohio State first baseman J.B. Shuck (Fr., Galion, Ohio/Galion) and into shallow right field well in front of right fielder Wes Schirtzinger (Jr., Westerville, Ohio/Westerville North) to score Scheidt from second for the winning run.
The inning played out much like the bottom of the seventh when the Buckeyes got out of a jam to force extra innings, but this time there would be no throw to the plate by Schirtzinger to nab the go-ahead run.
OSU starting pitcher Jake Hale (Fr., Albany, Ohio/Alexander) walked Jeff Kunkel to lead off the bottom of the seventh. He was bunted over by Pickens on the sacrifice. OSU head coach Bob Todd had Hale intentionally walk Nate Recknagel to set up the double play, but Derek VanBuskirk singled to right and that time Schirtzinger scooped up the ball and fired home to Eric Fryer (So., Reynoldsburg, Ohio/Reynoldsburg) who nabbed Kunkel trying to score. Adam Abraham popped up in foul to send the game to extra innings.

The Buckeyes had their chances in the game, but stranded eight base runners, including one in the top of the eighth inning when Fryer reached second after being hit to start the inning. Ronnie Bourquin (Jr., Canton, Ohio/Canton South) bunted him over and Jedidiah Stephen (Sr., Caldwell, Ohio/Shenandoah) was walked before Cody Caughenbaugh (Sr., Newark, Ohio/Licking Valley grounded into an inning-ending double play.
The game was deadlocked at one for much of the game.
Michigan scored its first run in the bottom of the first turning a lead-off walk by Eric Rose into a run on a two-out single up the middle by Doug Pickens.
Ohio State was able to tie the score in the top of the third inning. Tony Kennedy (So., Bloomington, Ind./Bloomington South) led off the inning with a base hit to center field and then went to second on a ground out by J.B. Shuck (Fr., Galion, Ohio/Galion). Kennedy scored from second on an RBI single to left by Jonathan Zizzo (So., Youngstown, Ohio/Sarasota [Fla.]).
Craig Murray, who came in for starter Chris Fetter to start the eighth, got the win despite walking a batter and hitting another. He improved to 4-0. Hale took the loss for Ohio State to fall to 1-3. He pitched 7.1 inning and allowed the two runs on seven hits with two strikeouts and four walks (two were interntional).
Mahler and Pickens had the RBI for Michigan and Scheidt was the only Wolverine batter with two hits. Angle was 2-for-4 for Ohio State and Zizzo had the team's RBI. Each team had seven hits and Michigan (19-12 overall, 7-4 Big Ten) overcame two errors against none by Ohio State (20-9, 6-5).
The last time Michigan won the first three games of a series against Ohio State was 2000, but the Buckeyes fought back to win 14-4 in the finale to prevent a sweep. Michigan has three four-game series sweeps of Ohio State, but none since 1987. Conversely, the Buckeyes also have swept the Wolverines three times though not since 1996.
The series concludes Sunday at 1:05 p.m. The game will be broadcast on AM 920 WMNI and on ohiostatebuckeyes.com.

After this weekend, thats 13 of 17 we have lost up there.

Somehow, Northwestern leads the Big Ten at 9-2. They were about the last team i thought we would be chasing.

We need to rally next weekend and take at least 3 of 4 from the Hoosiers.

Sorry, but there's absolutely no excuse for this shit. Five runs in the first three games against a team that was barely over .500, especially when that team is Michigan. And what's the deal with only four games against them his year and all of them up there?

    Fuck Michigan.

All Big Ten baseball series are 4 games over a weekend. Only one series a year.

This team got ahead of itself over the last few weeks. You're talking about a team with one senior that gets any meaningful minutes. They're going to go on streaks, both good and bad. It doesn't help to start with 3 of 4 series on the road. They'll have to pick up the slack at the end of the year with all the home games.

Michigan Completes Sweep with 5-4 Victory vs. Ohio State

First sweep by the Wolverines since 1987, first against OSU since Illinois in 2005

    Matt Angle went 2-2
    from the plate.

    April 16, 2006
    Box Score

    ANN ARBOR, Mich.
    - Michigan scored three runs off Ohio State starter J.B. Shuck in the bottom of the first inning and added two runs in the eighth in a 5-4 victory over the Buckeyes as the Wolverines registered their first sweep of Ohio State since 1987. The loss by Shuck was his first loss of the season and dropped him to 5-1.
Ohio State took its first lead in the series by scoring a run in the top of the first inning. Matt Angle (So., Whitehall, Ohio/Whitehall-Yearling) drew a walk to lead off the inning and went to third on a single through the right side by Jonathan Zizzo (So., Youngstown, Ohio/Sarasota [Fla.]). Eric Fryer (So., Reynoldsburg, Ohio/Reynoldsburg) drove him in with a single up the middle. A third hit of the inning loaded the bases with one out, but a pop up and a fly out ended the threat.
The lead did not last long, however, as the Wolverines scored three runs on four hits. OSU starting pitcher J.B. Shuck (Fr., Galion, Ohio/Galion) hit Eric Rose to lead off the inning. Leif Mahler singled through the right side and when Wes Schirtzinger (Jr., Westerville, Ohio/Westerville North) failed to scoop up the ball, Rose was able to score. Mahler reached second and went to third on a single through the left side by Doug Pickens. Nate Recknagel followed with an RBI single and Derek VanBuskirk gave Michigan a 3-1 lead with an RBI double to left-center field.
The Buckeyes got a run back in the fourth, turning a lead-off single up the middle by Adam Schneider (Jr., Agoura Hills, Calif./Agoura) into a run on a sacrifice fly by Angle. Schirtzinger bunted Schneider over and then he went to third on a single through the left side by Justin Miller (Fr., Dayton, Va./Turner Ashby) before scoring on Angle's sac fly. Zizzo singled to right field and Miller was waved home by head coach and third-base coach Bob Todd, but Miller was thrown out 9-3-2 to prevent the tying run from reaching the plate.

Shuck was replaced in the eighth inning by right-handed pitcher Dan Barker (So., Dayton, Ohio/Northmont). Shuck allowed three runs on nine hits with seven strikeouts and four walks.
Barker walked the first batter he faced and then gave up a double to left-center field to put runners and second and third. That forced Todd to bring in closer Rory Meister (So., Mansfield, Ohio/Mansfield Madison), but he gave up a two-run single to right-center field that gave Michigan a 5-2 lead.
Ohio State mounted a comeback in the top of the ninth, but it fell just short. Angle scored when Wolverine left-fielder Mike Schmidt dropped a fly ball off the bat of Ronnie Bourquin (Jr., Canton, Ohio/Canton South) that would have ended the game. Bourquin would come around from second to score on an RBI single to center by Jedidiah Stephen (Sr., Caldwell, Ohio/Shenandoah).
Michigan had two hits each from Mahler, Recknagel and Abraham. Tony Kennedy (So., Bloomington, Ind./Bloomington South) led the Buckeyes in going 3-for-4, while Zizzo and Stephen each had two hits. Ohio State out-hit Michigan 13-11. Each team had one error.
Andrew Hess picked up the victory for Michigan, improving to 2-0 on the year. He allowed two runs on 11hits with six strikeouts and two walks. Ben Janzen picked up the save, his first of the year.
The last time a team had swept Ohio State was last year when Illinois swept four games to open conference play.
Ohio State (20-11 overall, 6-6 Big Ten) returns to Bill Davis Stadium Wednesday at 6:35 p.m. when it plays host to the Oakland Golden Grizzlies. The game will be broadcast on AM 920 WMNI and on ohiostatebuckeyes.com.

I'm just frustrated that our only bad series had to come against Michigan...
