Big games from Alston and Mitchell led Ohio State women's hoops to its third win in a row
Ohio State women's basketball improved to 7-3 on the season Friday night after a 90-70 win over Princeton in Columbus. The third win in a row for head coach Kevin McGuff's squad snapped a seven-game winning streak for the Tigers, who suffered just their second loss of the season.
The Buckeyes shot over 57 percent from the floor while holding Princeton under 40 percent in a dominating effort.
Sophomore guard Kelsey Mitchell got off to a hot start, scoring 11 points in the first quarter to propel Ohio State to a 24-12 lead. Senior Ameryst Alston added seven points of her own in the opening frame.
The Buckeyes pushed the lead out further to begin the second. A layup by sophomore forward Alexa Hart put the scarlet and gray up 34-17, but Princeton fought back behind senior forward Alex Wheatley's six quick points. The lead had been trimmed to 37-26 at the halfway point in the quarter.
Courtney Banghart's club, which had been ranked 25th in the country by the AP to start the season and still receives votes in the poll, never got any closer. Alston assisted on consecutive hoops by juniors Shayla Cooper, back after serving a one-game suspension for conduct detrimental to the team, and Lisa Blair, and sunk a three-point shot and layup of her own, helping Ohio State to a 50-32 halftime lead.
Ohio State's two-time first-team All-Big Ten performer paced the team with 17 first-half points and five assists. Senior guard Michelle Miller was the only Tiger in double-figures with 13.
Alston and Mitchell kept up their unrelenting offensive attack in the third quarter as the Buckeyes blew things open. The pair slashed to the basket and sunk long-range shots, scoring 18 of the team's 22 points in the quarter, en route to a 74-48 lead with ten minutes to play.
The final quarter saw Princeton outscore Ohio State, but it was far too little, too late. Despite three players in double-figures, led by Miller's 21 and 14 apiece from Wheatley and senior Annie Tarakchian, the Buckeyes walked away with the blowout victory.
Alston led all scorers with 27 points, and added a game-high 6 assists. Mitchell was not far behind, scoring 25, while Cooper added 10 points and six rebounds.
Up next for Ohio State is a visit from Virginia on Monday night at 7:00 p.m. ET. The Cavaliers are the final nonconference opponent for the Buckeyes, who begin Big Ten play on New Year's Eve.
