Game Thread Ohio State vs Penn State, 10/28/17 @ 3:30 ET (FOX)

I agree with their oline being a liability against the pass rush. Also I too noticed the lack of athleticism in the back 7 for scum. There's a reason why scum had success early and it's because their offense put together two sustained drives and their defense was able to stay fresh.

It got away from scum when they couldn't keep their defense off the field. Which underscores that while scum has got two good starting defensive lineman they really lack any kind of depth.

Well obviously with how deep we are on the defensive front wearing down will never be an issue for this defensive front. It was comical watching Michigan's outside linebackers try to run as well. Now I'm not advocating letting our linebackers try to keep up with saquon but we are much more capable of keeping contain and staying with those wheel routes.

Also this Michigan defense has now struggled in back-to-back weeks against spread offenses. I would not be surprised if we have a very similar performance against scum as well it just might be who they are

I’m just glad they got their best game of the year out the way on Saturday so they can get their comeuppance this weekend. I get that they played out of their minds against a mediocre team under the lights in their own yard.

I just don’t think we see a repeat of that performance and won’t be surprised to say they are who we thought they were.

Is it Saturday yet?

Whoa whoa whoa. Be careful quoting that as we know how that quote ends.

Going back and watching the Penn State-Iowa game, one thing is for certain... get pressure on McSorley and he will fold. Every time the Hawkeyes brought heat, he either took a sack, threw a pick or fumbled the ball away.

Hope the staff was able to go back and watch some of this footage, because it shows the blueprint for beating this team.

They put a spy on Barkley and got after McSorley constantly, resulting in Penn State looking very inept. If Iowa doesn’t shoot itself in the foot with bad offensive plays, blocked kicks, turnovers... it walks away with a win. PSU had 5 points at the half because Iowa’s defense got after the QB. Barkley still had some explosive plays, which is to be expected, but the D did not break for him.

A couple of thoughts after the TSUN game...

  1. Penn State is a good team. They can beat the Buckeyes, if Ohio State is not on their game. The Buckeyes cannot "come out flat after a bye week", lose the first quarter, and not really harm their chances of victory.
  2. TSUN simply is terrible on offense. Terrible. QB whisperer? Puhleeze.
  3. TSUN playcalling, even planning on both sides of the ball, was a fail. Coaching was a real problem and they did not have a good game plan for Penn State.
  4. Unfortunately, I don't think that Penn State really got much of a physical game from the Wolverweenies.
  5. Penn State does not like uptempo. Run it against them the whole game and they could collapse. The ability to rotate Dobbins and Weber will be a big plus for Ohio State.
  6. They also don't like changing defensive looks. When TSUN changed from man to zone and back in the second quarter, McSorley was very confused.
  7. The bubble screen is going to be open all day. Set up the run, hit a few long passes, and Penn State is going to show you vulnerabilities. JT Barrett, there is a call for you on line 1.
  8. What is it about TSUN defensive players, fake dreadlocks, and running behind opposing players on the way to the end zone?
  9. McSorley is a good QB, but he has several weaknesses pointed out in the game thread. He has been getting away with throwing the high ball. Buckeye defenders need to turn their heads, for the possible interceptions and to avoid the pass interference calls.
  10. Despite the histrionics and talk, Barkley is not a Heisman candidate. He is a threat because of his ability to come out of the backfield as a receiver and bounce runs outside. The Buckeye defense will need to play disciplined football and keep to their assignments.
  11. This is Ohio State's last game of the regular season against a top-ranked opponent. Make it count.
Buckeyes: 38 -17

I'm scared. I'm so nervous. Kind of freaking out.

This is good news for the rest of you b/c it generally ends in a good result. My husband? He's ready to kill me.

And it's only Tuesday.

EDIT: Need the blankey jpg for this one... I'm starting to unpack the magic.

Iowa gave up a ton between the 20's but failed to break (well until the final seconds anyways) to give up points. You make a good point and yesterday I was thinking more on it and I too think its trace that you must stop.

After all it's Trace that throws the ball to Saquon and it's Trace who gets Saquon the ball on the option plays. Then you factor in Trace running the ball himself on designed calls and I really think teams have been falling right into what PSU wants. They want you to load the box to stop Saquon and they want you to play this soft zone to try and keep things in front of you. They know if you do that you can't bring a ton of pressure and they know that Trace will eventually find an open guy because of that lack of pressure. Barkley has been used as a decoy just as much as he's asked to make a play this year, and its been very successful for getting other players open.

I would love to see us get after Trace and take our chances with Saquon because I think we can limit Saquon if he's the majority of the time a running back instead of a receiver. Blitz, Play man, don't give Trace any time of day to throw and shut Trace down.

The cult was impressive last night but they simply exposed scUM for the pretender they truly are. McSquirelly, Barkley and Geseki are our challenge on Defense. I think that this is going to be a much closer game than some people think. It could come down to the last few minutes of the game. I still think the good guys come out on top.

GO BUCKS!!

At the very least, I have no doubt in my mind we'll beat scUM yet again this year. And, as much as this game means to me, beating scUM means we succeeded yet again in dismantling the dreams of thousands of fans, Harbaugh and their players. Continuing the tradition that really matters-- even if we lose to every opponent on our schedule.

Bingo. Lock down the QB and I really like the Bucks’ chances in this one. We have better athletes to get after him than Iowa does, for certain. The focus can’t be solely about Trace or things could get ugly. Allowing him time to make reads and get Barkley the ball in space could be disastrous.

The other thing that Iowa did was kicking the ball through the end zone. Cannot allow him to return the kick and find open lanes, because he’ll make special teams pay the price.

The more I watch game footage, the more confident I am that the Bucks have what it takes to lock them down. Just going to take execution and discipline.

Penn State is a very good team. However, as LJB posted, they haven't faced a decent offense all year and Ohio State is bringing one firing on all cylinders. That was especially true last night because TSUN just doesn't have a QB.

They want 'Bama? Fine. Give them hell.

Even if they got that far, I think there's a .00001% chance they'll beat Bama. It would make the Clemson game look good (Okay, a bit much but still...). Whereas, I think we could hang with Bama if we played like we played against Nebraska.

Just have to take away that time and space

91% chance of rain as per bucknuts... this favors us BIG IMO. Cold and Rainy isn't good for trying to throw vertically which they do a ton more of.

Give me JT's strength all day in these conditions over Trace. Hey the past few years were all we did was run for 300 yards a game may pay off in this one. We know we can win that way.

They're shit out of luck if they are forced to run the ball to win.

Way too early to pay too much attention to weather forecasts but the models show it coming through in the earlier part of the day and would be past at or around game time.
