Game Thread Ohio State vs Nebraska, 11/05/16, 8:00pm ET ABC

What to Watch for From the Buckeyes Saturday Night Against Nebraska

OHIOFlags.jpg

Any time you get a matchup between two Top 10 teams, there is going to be plenty to watch. No. 6 Ohio State and No. 10 Nebraska come into this game with identical 7-1 records and 3-1 records in conference play. A loss in this game is going to be devastating for one of these two teams.

So what should you keep your eye on this Saturday night? Plenty.

Containment
Nebraska quarterback Tommy Armstrong is No. 7 in the B1G in rushes of at least 10 yards with 19 such carries. That is one more than Curtis Samuel, one less J.T. Barrett, and two fewer than Mike Weber. Clearly, he is a running threat. Armstrong has 419 yards rushing this season, averaging nearly 12 carries per game. The Buckeyes haven't faced a quarterback who runs as much as Armstrong, which is why they have prepared for his running ability as much as his throwing ability this week. Ohio State did a fantastic job of containing Oklahoma's Baker Mayfield, but if Armstrong sees the containment out wide, he has no problem planting his foot and taking off upfield. They need to keep him from getting loose and picking up third downs. If they do that, they'll be very, very successful.

Deep Balls
If you ask J.T. Barrett, the reason teams are playing so far off of the Buckeye receivers is because they respect the deep threat so much. Will Nebraska have that same respect, or will they first force Barrett to actually connect with a receiver down the field before they show the same caution and fear? Based on what Huskers defensive backs coach Brian Stewart said this week, there is both fear and curiosity.

"I think the thing that we haven't seen and I'm praying to God we don't see is [Barrett] throwing vertical," he told reporters this week. "I think that they're averaging... looking at the film, they probably throw the ball vertical down the field five or six times. He hasn't really been able to connect like he has in the past so he's been giving them the intermediate routes [which] have been successful for them.

"Those guys are pretty fast. They got behind Indiana. They got behind Northwestern. They got behind Wisconsin. [Barrett] just hasn't connected yet and I don't want him to. So if you ask me what I'm worried about, that'll keep you up right there."

Quick message from a husker fan. I notice you guys bring up our punting game but our struggles have mostly come from a poor special team coach. 3 blocked punts does not do your punting average very good.

Obviously we had a senior guy in there prior to the season who we lost and we are very grateful for your schools acknowledgement of him. Now we have a freshman punter in there and he did struggle at the beginning of the year but he has been doing a bang up job as of late, really punting well for us.

Now the game plan is to not face a fourth down on offense and therefore not punt at all XD

Good luck to the Buckeyes Saturday and I am excited for a clean, fun, hard fought game until the end against one of the best programs in the world. GBR!!

Did you come to our board to talk punter smack?!?! How dare you!

OK, I kid. Welcome to the board. I assume if either of us are lamenting the woes of our punting game afterward, then it was a long night for our respective team. Obviously many Buckeye fans are scratching our heads at being a 16-17 point favorite in this matchup. Riley seems to have your squad heading back in the right direction so we expect a tough matchup. If you haven't noticed we've struggled of late to put teams away. Looking forward to a great contest between 2 "blue bloods" of the game. Here's to a good game!

Well the only reason I bring it up is because many of us over at Huskerboard believe our below stellar special teams coaching is going to cost us a game this season. Combine that with losing Sam before the season and the punting game is a definite topic of discussion for us.

That being said I agree that I hope we won't be talking about that post game as a difference in the game. Any who, what is up with that line!? Fans from both sides seem shocked. I really hope Vegas is wrong, just for the sake of a great game, which I think we will see Saturday.

Great picture  that's about what we've looked like this year at times

I probably should've done this earlier but I was reading some bullshit article on ESPN about this game, and I suddenly realized I hadn't checked the previous scores/games Nebraska played. I'm not AS worried (still my usual constant jittery self-carrying a bottle of Xanax and antacid around all week). I saw Nebby's games have all been pretty close for the most part. Including beating Purdue by only 13. The same Purdue PSU hung 62 points on last weekend. Only ranked win was at home against Oregon by 3.

Then again, we looked GREAT earlier this season and until I see proof otherwise, it seems the wheels may be coming off.

Why, oh why did they have to schedule this as another night game? I find it hard to enjoy the day games when our game is in the back of my mind. 30 hours to go...

Well, Buckeye fans can relate to the worry of special teams. While our ST have been pretty good this season, they bit us in the butt at Penn State (blocked FG that was returned for a TD). Of course we had enough time to mount a game winning drive, but that fizzled. Our line seemed to be wearing the tutus on that occasion. Actually the picture I found of the punter really reminded me of something different ... but I went with tutus because ... well it's tutus. Maybe you'd like West Side Story better?

As for the line/spread on the game? No clue. Those guys in the desert don't like to lose money so I'm hoping they know something that we don't.
