MICHIGAN STATE ENDURES BIGGEST LOSS OF THE MARK DANTONIO ERA

87790_h.jpg

When Vegas oddsmakers opened with Ohio State as a 15½-point over Michigan State, many local fans—including the author—guffawed at their stupidity.

After all, only one point separated these two teams over the last five years. Betting Spartans (+17) seemed as easy as stealing a lollipop from a toddler—or so it seemed at the time.

Ohio State and Michigan State played four quarters Saturday, and OSU walked away with a 45 point victory. Notably, this was the worst loss for Mark Dantonio in his Michigan State career.

Dantonio hasn't suffered a similar loss since 2011, when his Spartans lost to Nick Saban's Alamaba Crimson Tide, 49-7, in the Capital One Bowl.

OHIO STATE BLASTS MICHIGAN STATE, 48-3, TAKES COMMAND OF BIG TEN EAST RACE

Many wondered what Ohio State's level of motivation would be against Michigan State following a 55-24 loss to Iowa that knocked the Buckeyes to the brink of playoff elimination.

Those questions were answered fairly quickly.

The Buckeyes scored the first 35 points of the game thanks to a dominant running game and rolled the Spartans 48-3 to take firm control of the Big Ten East race.

After a week in which Ohio State running backs J.K. Dobbins and Mike Weber collected just 11 carries between them, the Buckeyes made a point to get the duo involved early.

On Ohio State's first possession, the Buckeyes ran the ball on four of their first five plays, the last of which resulted in a 47-yard touchdown run from Weber, giving Ohio State the early 7-0 lead.

The Buckeyes kept the ball on the ground for the majority of the first half, as quarterback J.T. Barrett attempted just nine passes, completing six for 67 yards and a score to go along with a late second quarter interception. The veteran signal caller accounted for a pair of rushing scores, while finding Dobbins on a swing pass near the goal line for an 8-yard score.

MIKE WEBER, J.K. DOBBINS, OHIO STATE RUN FOR 335 YARDS AGAINST MICHIGAN STATE – THE MOST THE SPARTANS HAVE SURRENDERED IN 15 YEARS

87797_h.jpg

Mark Dantonio's Michigan State Spartans brought the nation's No. 3 rushing defense to Ohio State, surrendering just 87 yards on the ground per game this season.

Expect their fall in the team rankings to be swift and uncomfortable after the No. 13 Buckeyes piled up 335 rushing touchdowns and 4 touchdowns on the Spartans on the way to a 48-3 blowout in Columbus.

The 335 yards on the ground were the most ever surrendered by a Mark Dantonio Michigan State defense and the most allowed by the Spartans since Heisman Trophy winner Larry Johnson and Penn State piled up 422 rushing yards way back in November of 2002.

For the record: Larry Johnson did NOT win the Heisman in 2002, largely because the Ohio State defense held him to 16 carries for 66 yards, and 6 receptions for 32 yards.

Carson Palmer won the Heisman in 2002, because he did not have to go up against the Silver Bullets.

But you forget, USC was "the hottest team in the country" at the end of the year and surely would've beaten us. Just like every other year after they lose multiple September/October games
