Game Thread Ohio State vs Michigan State - 10/05/19, 7:30PM (ABC)

Fields had an alright game and he is doing so well with his raw talent and athleticism, but I feel like he is still lagging on his reads quite a bit. Not really complaining though, he is doing a great job, just pointing out that he still has plenty of room for improvement imo and that is kind of scary.

Do you see it as the game not having slowed down for him yet, or just not making decisions quickly enough?

Seems like he goes through phases of great indecision and then a few drives like in the 2nd Q he gets much more comfortable and commits quickly, leading to chunk plays and easy scores.

Not sure how much they ran hurry up in the 2nd half, but I think he'd benefit greatly from more of it. Especially early in the game and out of the half.

Overall, like you say, this is pretty amazing to see what he does and know he could probably be much better next year. Makes beautiful throws every game.

Fuller earned that return and that hit by Browning was an absolutely beautiful block. Everything about it was flawless, I don’t care what new garbage they’re adding to the rule book.

Illegal blindside block, my ass. That’s exactly how it’s supposed to be done. No block in the back and the kid was taken out while trying to chase down the ball carrier. You can’t draw it up any better from Browning’s angle. “Sorry son, just step aside and hope he doesn’t make the tackle!”

This one is a C’MON MAAAN!!

FOOTBALL: NO. 4 OHIO STATE TROUNCES NO. 25 MICHIGAN STATE 34-10

IMG_7887-530x339.jpeg

Sixteen total yards, zero rushing, a missed field goal and a key drop –– nothing went right for the Buckeye offense in the first quarter.

They must have been saving it for the second.

No. 4 Ohio State (6-0, 3-0 Big Ten) scored on all four of its drives, putting up 24 points and 296 yards to extend a streak of dominant second quarters in which the Buckeyes have outscored opponents 134-20, en route to a 34-10 win over No. 25 Michigan State (4-2, 2-1).

“We did face adversity,” Ohio State head coach Ryan Day said. “It was not a good quarter of football on offense. And, again, when you’re playing against a team like Michigan State, things like that are going to happen. You have to respond, and I thought we did.”

Up just 3-0 after an out-of-sync opening quarter, Ohio State found its rhythm on its first drive of the second.

A rollout from sophomore quarterback Justin Fields drew the attention of a Michigan State safety and linebacker, leaving senior wide receiver Binjimen Victor uncovered to atone for an early drop with a 60-yard catch-and-run to the end zone, diving over the pylon for an emphatic score.

Fields kept it rolling on the next Buckeye drive, hitting redshirt junior tight end Luke Farrell on a 21-yard touchdown that saw him slip two tackles before breaking the plane. It was Farrell’s second catch of the season, and gave Ohio State back-to-back scores to go up 17-7.

Junior running back J.K. Dobbins was held to 42 yards on 12 carries in the first half before busting out of the backfield for a 67-yard dash to the end zone with 2:24 remaining in the half, to make it 24-10. Dobbins finished with 172 yards on 24 carries.

“That was a home run hit right there that I think really changed the game,” Day said. “But up to that point we started to get it going a little bit but that kind of shifted and turned it into I think almost a 300-yard quarter.”

FOOTBALL: MISCUES LEAVE POINTS ON FIELD FOR OHIO STATE AGAINST MICHIGAN STATE

edit-8369-530x353.jpg

As the first ranked opponent of No. 4 Ohio State’s season, No. 25 Michigan State and the nation’s fourth-best rush defense was the toughest test yet for the Buckeyes.

That didn’t stop them from securing a sixth straight 24-plus point win, but it did expose rarely seen fallacies from an Ohio State team that has looked like a juggernaut to this point.

Ohio State fell victim to unforced errors in the form of penalties, turnovers, misfires and a missed field goal that prevented a wider margin of victory, but also showed that the Buckeyes are not invincible.

“We just started out rough,” sophomore quarterback Justin Fields said. “The offense, we were kind of killing ourselves. We kind of got back together in the second quarter and did what we were supposed to do.”

That start was a three-and-out, one of three consecutive for the Buckeyes.

On Fields’ first dropback, the Georgia native didn’t properly set his feet for a pass and badly missed wide open redshirt junior tight end Luke Farrell. The inaccurate throw was atypical of Fields’ usually precise passing, and gave an early indication that the offense was out of sorts.

The very next play, Fields was sacked for a loss of 18 by Michigan State senior linebacker Joe Bachie.

Fields and the Buckeye offense were bailed out by the defense twice early, as they forced and recovered two Spartan fumbles deep in their own territory, which should’ve set up easy scores to get the engine running.

Instead, Ohio State generated just three points on the turnovers, despite being given the ball at the Michigan State 27 and 22. The Buckeyes could not pick up a first down on either possession.

A false start call on redshirt sophomore offensive tackle Wyatt Davis stalled the offense following the first fumble, leading to a 37-yard field goal attempt by junior kicker Blake Haubeil, but he missed it wide right.

It wasn’t the only flag for the Buckeyes.

FOOTBALL: OHIO STATE RUSHING ATTACK EXPLODES IN SECOND QUARTER

IMG_7887-530x339.jpeg

Ohio State ran for more yards Saturday than Michigan State’s first five opponents combined.

More impressive is that the Buckeyes gained all 323 in the final three quarters against the nation’s No. 4 rush defense, after being stymied for zero yards in the first. Junior running back J.K. Dobbins finished with 172 yards and a touchdown on 24 carries.

“You have to wear them down, and you’ve got to cover them up,” head coach Ryan Day said. “The running backs have to turn 4-yard runs into six. Then eventually over time, if you can start to run on them, you can maybe crack some.”

The offensive line started hammering a few cracks into the Spartans’ defensive wall when Dobbins took a rush over the left side for 13 yards during Ohio State’s first touchdown drive.

Sophomore quarterback Justin Fields connected with senior wide receiver Binjimen Victor for a 60-yard score the next play, several defenders distracted by his running abilities as he rolled out.

Two drives later, it carpet-bombed the same wall when Dobbins cut once and bolted 67 yards for a touchdown.

“It’s one thing to go [for] a 20-yard gain, but to come off the back-end, and that was 67 yards,” Day said. “That’s a game changer.”

Ohio State took a 3-0 end-of-first quarter lead to a 27-10 halftime supremacy, gaining 163 yards rushing in 15 minutes.

Redshirt senior offensive tackle Branden Bowen said once the Ohio State offensive line figured out how to block Michigan State’s defensive linemen one-on-one, the offense started to open up.

“[They] came in and played a little bit different than what we thought, took us off double teams,” Bowen said. “We excel in double teams, that’s why we struggled a little bit, trying to figure all that out.”
