Ohio State vs. #2 Auburn (in Atlanta), Dec. 14 @ 1pm ET, ESPN2

"Fire Diebs..."

They're still paying Holtmann big money and owe Diebs $2.5M over 5 years, unless it's somehow not guaranteed. And depending on the football team's performance in the CFP, a new head fb coach might be a higher priority, and that alone would inflict great pain on the boosters?

Idk, I don't understand how coaches are so successful at negotiating ridiculously lucrative contracts that ultimately put their school between a rock and a hard place. 5 f'ing years, 2.5 million after being acting HC for one month.
Obviously it's too early to start talking like that, but I'd say the reason why is it's important to give Diebler a chance to show what he can do with his own team. You could argue he helped build this team, but he definitely needs to have a chance to build from the ground up with some years to see how he is able to do things perhaps differently than Holtmann. And as you mentioned, they have financial reasons why they should not be thinking along those lines.

Suppose so, but there were up and comers who were available last year (Dusty May, e.g.). It's the weak negotiation skills on Gene Smith's side that boggle my mind. Take Day's $10M per year. What would he do if only offered, say, $7M/year, say Nope fuck off, I'm outta here? He has the 5th highest HC salary in college football at his first HC job.

For Diebler, couldn't they say "1.0M (+ lucrative incentives) per year because you have no experience as a HC prior to February." If Diebs had flipped them the bird Smith/Bjork could have said fine, we'll find somebody, we're Ohio State. I mean he won some games, but it was hardly much of a track record. Diebler's salary is only $1M per year less than Dusty May's ($3.55M this year).

Then there's Holtmann who had his contract extended to 2028 after never reaching the Sweet 16 over several years, etc... and his buyout was $12.5M. It's sickening to me.

Exactly. Experience isnt always great and it takes a while to unlearn bad habits.
