This is a lot of "I wish" talk in the game thread for a game that already happened..
Anyway, I like the idea of 8 teams with auto bids for conference champions, as long as there can be 1 last chance to weed out the teams that don't belong. I think there should be a rule that if the conference champion has 3 or more losses, they lose their auto bid. No offense to Northwestern, but I don't think that a team with 4 losses should be considered for the playoffs, and the fact that they won their division and were within a game of winning the conference tells me that we need to shut this down before it ever happens.
After the 5 conference champions have been decided, I like the idea of saving one spot for the highest-ranked non-P5 team, and that includes Notre Dame. If you want to remain independent, fine. It's no skin off my ass. And maybe it'd be just 1 spot for the highest-ranked non-P5 team that is in the top 10 or 12. Outside of that, better luck next year.
With the last 2 or more spots (remember, one or more of the conference champions might not have qualified), it's just ranking to get them in. And the ranking should be some formula to figure it all out. I want to see a really complicated formula that 99% of the fans hate because they aren't smart enough to understand it. I want to see ESPN whine about how hard it is, and they should be allowed to choose the 8 teams, themselves. Don't get me wrong - I don't want to see a total bullshit thing where no one knows what's going on - I want to actually be able to see the formula and apply it, myself. It can't be like the old computer polls, where no one let the outside world have any idea how they worked. The at-large teams would be picked by this formula.
And my favorite part: play the stupid games at the teams' home fields. Or at least let the higher-ranked teams choose. If Ohio State is the 3 seed, they play the 6 seed in Columbus. In December. Eff you, cry-babies!!! Or, let's say Ohio State works out a deal with Lucas Oil Stadium and they agree to play there. Fine. That's up to Ohio State and Lucas Oil - NOT the NCAA or the SEC or Tim May or Reece Davis or #6 USC.
I think the 2nd round games should also be at the higher-ranked teams' sites, but that's a losing battle, so I'll just have to be content with first round.
