Game Thread Ohio State @ That TeaX Up North - 11/30/19, Noon (FOX)

Why, when reading goblow.com, does it feel like I’m reading the words of a group of people who were stuffed in gym lockers for most of their HS years? I mean seriously.

Fuck *ichigan.

Entitlement.

They are a program steeped in it. It's core to their culture.

They don't talk about building the better program, recruiting better players, hiring better coaches, dedication to preparation or out working their opponent.

They talk about it being their turn, being due, it's only fair, it's been 50 years etc. In short, they hope to win because they feel it is owed to them.

Accountability, sacrifice, hard work and achievement are concepts still core to people from the state of Ohio and our flagship, THE Ohio State University.

I wouldn't trade places with those spineless, Montessori school, play date bred bitches no matter what happens on the field or for how long.

Fuck *ichigan

For the record my two young Buckeyes are Montessori school educated. They rubbed dog shit in the tsun’s children’s faces after each Buckeye win. Every year one the parents of the tsun kids try to talk to me about The Game but I avoid those conversations. Those people are just awkward conversationalists.

My personal top five six plays from The Game. Sorry for the recency bias, my earliest memories are from the Cooper days and I have no good memories from that era (it took a lot of alcohol and hard work to repress those memories)

#6 - 2013: Tyvis saves the day

Really tight game from start to finish. Good guys gave up one of the few two score leads in the second half to let the skunk bears tie it with 5 minutes to go. Buckeyes take the lead with 2 minutes to go. TTUN drives the length of the field to score. Hoke decides to go for two because snack time is quickly approaching. Tyvis Powell picks off Garner and the Buckeyes win streak is up to 24.

#5 - 2017: Kid no longer

Again? JT is injured in the game again. Buckeye faithful are hopeful for a repeat of the magic from 2014, but this is a much dire situation. Cardale came in for one quarter with a lead and had Zeke and an elite Buckeye D to help take off the pressure. He was not asked to win the game. Dwane comes in down 6 and had to lead an offense that was not showing much sign of life to that point to a come from behind victory. Oh and by the way Dwayne had to do it in front of hostile crowd at the toilet bowl. The freshman came in played a near flawless game in one of the biggest pressure situations imaginable. This run to set up the Zeke score turned the tides in that game.

#4 - 2005: The Catch

The 2005 Game often gets overshadowed by the 2006 #1-#2 game. But this was one of my favorite plays of all time. Troy Smith avoids a sure sack. Gonzo puts on the brakes and makes a huge catch that he knows the TTUN defender is going to make him pay for. Catch made. Pittman won't be denied at the goal line - victory good guys.

#3 - 2002: History/Legacy

In true Tresselball fashion, the Game came down to the defense needing to hold on to victory in final seconds for the second year in a row. So much had changed from last year. The stakes were higher - a historic 13-win regular season and a chance at the national title were on the line. Will Allen steps in front. "Let's Party Columbus". The Buckeyes went on to play for all the Tostitos and we all know how that went.

#2 - 2001: The promise fulfilled

The final interception is the play that sticks in my memory from this game. I can't find a video of that play so included this video. It includes one of two honorary members of the top Game memories - Tressel's promise. (see the end for the other). This game was full of great plays, bu the best moment of that was the final pick. Despite the 23-0 lead, no Buckeye was sure of victory. Then when the skunkbears began to come back, Buckeye Nation as a whole held their breath. After so many years of disappointment, I don't think there was one fan who wasn't thinking about the worst case scenario when the TTUN offense took the field for one last time down by 6 points. In our wildest dreams, I doubt there were many fans who predicted how successful the next two decades would be in this rivalry. But that play sent a message - The Game would now be anticipated with excitement and hope and no longer with fear and dread.

#1 - 2016: The spot

ohio-state-fourth.jpg

The play that broke Khakis? Why post a video when a picture says a thousand words. As he made a career out of doing, JT guts his team to victory when they needed it the most. I can't think one single moment that has impacted the trajectory of the series as this moment. Khakis had fans and players up north drinking the kool-aid. A stop on that play puts TTUN in the B1G Championship Game (shudder) and most likely into the playoffs (double shudder). Instead the weasels were left with a shell of a coach and everyone has seen what he really is - someone who can put a spark into a program short term, but who's persona ultimately wears thin. And they are stuck in purgatory with him as he continues to do just well enough to keep him from being fired. Thanks JT.

Special mentions: Marcus Hall ejection, breaking McGuffie, Olave's block, the entire 60 minutes of superiority in 2008, 2006 4th quarter 85 yard drive ending with Smith to Robiskie, Curtis Samuel in 2 OT.

Honorary Member of the List:

2011: Urban comes home

Not included above because it technically is not a memory from the Game, but no list of great moments in this rivalry is complete without this day. Within 48 hours of TTUN's only victory in 8 years - a time when those assholes should have their chests puffed out even further than usual and still be on cloud 9 - Urban comes home. Immediately fans from both sides take notice. The taste of success up north rapidly fades as they start to imagine future matchups between the cave man they have roaming their sidelines and the legend that is now in Scarlet and Gray. In the great state of Ohio, fans that we have a chance to be even better than we were under Tressel - an era of nearly unprecedented success at a time the program most needed. What a great day.
