Ohio State Softball 2009 Season

COLUMBUS, Ohio - The No. 17-ranked Ohio State softball team used two homeruns and 10 total hits as it defeated Michigan State, 9-1, in six innings Sunday afternoon at New Buckeye Field in front of 603 fans. Whitney Cooper and Leah Ledford each hit the ball out of the park as the Buckeyes extended their winning streak to 11 games and moved to 22-3 on the season, 2-0 in the Big Ten while the Spartans fall to 10-15 overall and 0-2 in the conference.
The Buckeyes jumped out to a quick start, going up 3-0 after the first inning off Cooper's blast. Sam Marder walked to start off the inning and advanced to second on a single up the middle by Tory Haddad. Cooper then came up swinging and promptly sent the ball to straight center and over the 220-foot wall for the fourth round-tripper this season by the Barstow, Calif. native.

Both the softball and baseball teams are playing very good ball this year. Great to see. On a side note the big 10 in softball is looking pretty tough this year with OSU, nw and scum all ranked in the top 15

COLUMBUS, Ohio - The No. 15 Ohio State softball team split its Big Ten series with Iowa, falling 12-4, in six innings Sunday at a rain-soaked and wind-blown New Buckeye Field. The Buckeyes, who earned a 3-0 win over the Hawkeyes Saturday, fall to 24-6 on the season, 3-1 in the conference, while Iowa improves to 27-7 overall and 1-1 in the Big Ten.
Freshman Vanessa Spears hit her first career homerun and Whitney Cooper went 2-for-3 from the plate, but the Hawkeyes out-hit the home team 16-8 on the day and used a six-run second inning to pull out to an early lead.
With Iowa holding a 6-0 lead after 1.5 innings, Ohio State chipped away at the margin with two runs in the bottom half of the second with a RBI double by Rachael Shepherd that plated Spears and a sac fly to left from Courtney Pruner that gave Leah Ledford enough time to tag up and head home.

Bucks sweep Ball State to climb to 26-6 on the season

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Sam Marder belted a pair of homeruns, one in each game, as the No. 17 Ohio State softball team swept Ball State Wednesday, 9-1 and 4-0, in a doubleheader at New Buckeye Field. With the wins, the Buckeyes improve to 26-6, while the Cardinals drop to 13-16.

Leah Ledford knocked the ball out of the park, while Alicia Herron tallied three hits and pitchers Kim Reeder and Lindsay Bodeker combined for 11 strikeouts on the day.

SB: No. 17 Ohio State Sweeps Minnesota in Big Ten Doubleheader


Buckeyes have won six out of last seven games, improve to 5-1 in the Big Ten with pair of 1-0 wins
COLUMBUS, Ohio ? The No. 17-ranked Ohio State softball team picked up a pair of 1-0 wins over Minnesota Saturday at Jane Sage Cowles Stadium in Minneapolis, Minn. The teams were scheduled to play a Saturday-Sunday series, but decided to play both games Saturday in anticipation of inclement weather forecasted for Sunday in the Twin Cities.
Ohio State improves to 28-6 on the season and 5-1 in the Big Ten, while the Golden Gophers drop to 20-21 overall and 3-3 in the conference.

Softball Bucks dedicate new Buckeye Field win 7th straight win

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Alicia Herron hit her sixth homerun of the season, a three-run blast in the fourth, to lead the No. 16-ranked Ohio State softball team to a 5-0 win over Big Ten foe Illinois Saturday afternoon at New Buckeye Field in front of an all-time program record 1,277 fans. With the Buckeyes' seventh-consecutive win, they improve to 31-6 on the year and 8-1 in the conference, while the Illini dip to 22-11 overall and 5-3 in the Big Ten.
Senior pitcher Kim Reeder earned the win in the circle and moved into second all-time in both wins and innings pitched. The captain from Salinas, Calif., now holds 67 career victories to her credit (16-3 this season), tying Katie Chain (2000-03) for second, in 678.0 innings pitched. Reeder struck out three Saturday, while giving up three hits.

COLUMBUS, Ohio - The 14th ranked and Big Ten-leading Ohio State softball team split its series with Purdue Wednesday, falling 3-2 in the first game before earning a 4-1 win in the second, at New Buckeye Field. The loss snapped an 11-game winning streak for the Buckeyes, who move to 36-7 on the season, 12-2 in the Big Ten. The Boilermakers are now 24-17 overall and 7-7 in the conference.

Game Two: Lindsay Bodeker struck out eight and allowed just four hits through seven innings to earn her 13th win of the season in the second game.

After 2.5 scoreless innings, the Buckeyes took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third when Tory Haddad doubled to left field, plating Leah Ledford who singled up the middle to start off the inning. Purdue tied it up in the top of the fourth, but a three-run Buckeye barrage in the bottom half of the inning put Ohio State back on top.

#11 Lady Buckeyes win again


COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Ohio State softball team defended its first games as the No. 11 team in the nation, its highest ranking in program history, by shutting out Western Michigan, 2-0 and 1-0, in the final non-conference doubleheader of the season. With the wins, the Buckeyes improve to 40-7 on the season, while the Broncos fall to 19-19 overall.
Alicia Herron was responsible for plating both game-winning wins, sending home the first on a long a long sac fly in the first inning and the second on a RBI single to right field that scored Tory Haddad. Haddad went 3-for-3 in the second game in addition to scoring the lone run.
"I could not be happier with our pitching tonight," head coach Linda Kalafatis said after the game. "We definitely rode the coattails of Lindsay and Kim when we could not get the run support in our at-bats. Bo threw with a lot of confidence in what I think was her best outing of the season."
