Ohio State Sets New NCAA Record With Conference Win Over Illini

The Buckeyes set new NCAA record with their 30th straight conference win and break the mark set by Florida State during the 1992-1995 seasons. Their 23rd straight win overall is tops in NCAA, and also make it seven straight against the Illini and retain the IlliBuck trophy.

Defense holds on opening drive and the Buckeyes take over from their own 42 and drive right down the field. A TD was overturned and the Buckeyes don’t get into the end-zone and Neurenberger misses a FG with 6:41 left of the first quarter.

Defense playing lights out early and a blocked punt by Curtis Samuel gives the Buckeyes the ball on the Illini 49. Back to back pass plays to Michael Thomas results in a 24 yard touchdown from J.T. Barrett with 3:43 left in the first quarter.
7-0 Buckeyes

Buckeyes keep bringing the pressure and make the Illini punt yet again and take over on their own 22 with under a minute left in the first.

End of the 1st Buckeyes up 7-0

Buckeyes begin second quarter at their own 32 can’t convert and punt away. Illini begin at their own 31 with 13:00 to go in the second. Illini begin to move the ball for the first time thanks to Josh Ferguson but the drive stalls and Zalewski hits a 46 yard FG.

7-3 Buckeyes 10:12 Second

An Illini kick out of bounds gives the buckeyes the ball at the 35 but they fail to gain a first down and kick it back to the Illini and Johnston burrows them inside the ten.

27 yard run by Ferguson gets the Illini out of harms way and gives them some breathing room but it dies there as the defense begins to put the clamps back down and get the ball at their own 20 6:04 left in the half.

Ezekiel Elliott gains 12 on first play and J.T. Barrett fumbles on the next play and the Illini recover at the 31 yard line. The Illini still struggle to move the ball and settle for. FG from Zalewski from 50 yards that clanks the upright.

Buckeyes take over at their own 20 with 4:43 left and a chance to close out the half on a positive note after a fairly lackluster first half and punt it away after a three and out. The Illini take over at their own 16.

The Buckeyes hold them to another three and out and get the ball back in good field position at their own 40 and some time left on the clock.

A big completion of 23 yards to Jalin Marshall gets the ball into FG range with 1:36 left. The Buckeyes go for it on 4th and 11 after a Farris penalty and a run by J.T. Barrett to the 22 keeps them alive with 1:09 to go.

A completion to Samuel for 10 yards and a holding against the Illini gives them 1st and goal at the 5 and Barrett takes it in from there.

14-3 Buckeyes at the half

Barrett 9-13 106 yards, 1 TD And 11 carries for 56 yards, 1 TD

Thomas 3 catches for 56 yards, 1 TD

Ezekiel Elliott 9 carries for 47 yards

Buckeyes defense held the Illini to 101 total yards in the first half. Buckeyes receive the kickoff to start the second half.

Buckeyes begin second half with a three and out and Johnston buries the Illini at the ten. Quick passing and a faster game plan moves the ball down the field inside the Buckeyes twenty. Lunt misses a wide open receiver on third down and the Illini botch the snap on the FG try and the Buckeyes take over on downs with 10:55 in the third.

Ezekiel Elliott breaks off a long run taking the Buckeyes into Illini territory and they continue to work him taking the ball inside the red-zone. Read option keeper by Barrett to the one and then Ezekiel Elliott scores on the next play with 6:57 left in the third.

21-3 Buckeyes

Big catch over the middle by Cain puts the Illini in business at the Ohio State 21 where they end up going for it on 4th and 1 and lose yardage on the play. Buckeyes take over on downs 4:53 to go in the third at the 16.

The game plan to feed Zeke becomes clear after gains of ten, seven and seven. The Buckeyes then change up play calling and wind up having a fourth and a half yard to go and get it with a run by Ezekiel Elliott who has the ball stripped at the 42 but keep the ball after the review. Two plays later the Illini intercepts an errant Barrett pass with :59 left in the third.

The Illini are able to move the ball some aided by a penalty on a failed third down

21-3 Buckeyes end of third

Illini start the third with the ball and momentum at their own 45 and can’t keep things going and punt away to the Buckeyes down by three scores. Buckeyes take over at their own 13 after a short Jalin Marshall return.

Buckeyes suffering thru third downs going 2/9 and get a rare one with a Vannett catch. Buckeyes mixing up the play calling after running Ezekiel on a few plays and wind up with a their and long after a fumble by Barrett that was recovered by Vannett and a delay of game. Another failed third down and a punt later from Johnston that was muffed by Bentley is recovered by Brionte Dunn inside the ten. Elliott scores in the next play with 9:47 left.

28-3 Buckeyes

The Illini continue to battle and move the ball down the field with the help of Desmond Cain who as 10 catches at this point. They get into Buckeyes territory inside the 30. Going for it on 4th and 12 and do not convert turning over on downs with 5:13 to go.

Cardale Jones takes over at QB has a completion to Thomas on first play. Brionte Dunn comes in and gains some yardage on carries as well.

Final stats
Barrett 15/23 150 yards, 1 TD/1 INT and 16 carries for 74 yards and 1 TD

Ezekiel Elliott 27 carries 181 yards, 2 TD’s

Michael Thomas 6 catches for 76 yards, 1 TD

Silver Bullets held the Illini to 259 total yards and only 18 rushing with 15 first downs.
